RID issue...whatever it is

So I read the last two issues of RID (?34 and 35).
Clearly, this series is driven by Hasbro's desire to sell toys and nothing more. So I'm going to stop complaining and dogging it, because if I didn't, the jokes on me. Then you could place me in the same category as that fat comic book store loser on the Simpsons, the kind of 40+ year-old chap that completely misses the point on how he's not really the intended audience, but doesn't realize it.
I think back to the days when I was 12 and how those first twenty or so Marvel issues were mind blowing. Yet in retrospect, they were written on the clear template of glorified advertising, with the introduction of a new toy every issue. The main crew, then Shockwave, then the Dinobots, then Devestator, then Jetfire, then the second wave (Hoist, Grapple, etc), then the Cybertronian gang, then Omega Supreme, then the Aerialbots and Stunticons, then Protectobots and Combaticons, then the Predacons. All crammed in 25 issues That's just how it was done, and now, that's how RID is being done.
Granted, Barber and co. are still trying to sell it to the MTMTE audience, which is foolish on their part. It does give me a bit of a green light to take a few potshots at it, so here it goes.
We're like, what, seven years in with IDW at least, and suddenly now Combiners are all that? This, despite having already seen just about every combiner toy made at some point or another? Prime said it best when he was talking to Alpha Trion. Something like "You're speaking about the great mystery of Combiners and the danger they pose? Only (takes long breath) Nova Prime, Jhiaxus, Shockwave, and Megatron have every been able to make a Combiner. Oh!, and Swindle too. Forgot about him, he kind of did it in a rush. But yeah, only those guys have ever been able to attempt this technology, something our race has been trying to achieve for millions of years, since the Golden Age of Cyberton. It's been such a great challenge for so long. Never mind it's been done like six times in the past six years, this goes waaaaaaay back. Oh, and forget that giant combiner creature made of thousands of Scourges. I'm trying to forget that just like everyone else is."
Or he said something like that.
I enjoyed Ramondelli's work that last issue, and I enjoy seeing a bit more of the back story involving Alpha Trion, Galvatron and Nova Prime. Megatronus? Ugh.
I'm just going to have to keep reminding myself I'm not the intended audience. What's difficult about that is the two series (RID and MTMTE) are still intertwined and relevant to each other to a certain degree, which makes it harder to ignore. I think if Barber wasn't butchering the character of Prowl, someone so integral to MTMTE, I'd be less peeved about it all.

Re: RID issue...whatever it is
My POV on RID these days is simply that it exists to provide covering fore for MTMTE, which i doubt would be able to be it's wonderful self if there were not a "main" TF title that plods along in more expected fashion.
So for that alone i am grateful.

Great point. Were it not for RID, would Hasbro even allow MTMTE to exist? Hell no.
So yeah, I guess I too am grateful for RID

Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.
Fool me 30-whatever times? Just shame.

Re: RID issue...whatever it is
Hm, I'm not sure importing wholesale the Thirteen Primes from the Aligned continuity into the IDW continuity is really the kind of development I was really after. Roberts gives us a whole new mythology based around the Knights of Cybertron, the Guiding Hand and a whole host of new mythological figures, while Barber gives us a lazy retreading of The Covenant of Primus centred around Alpha-bastard-Trion, the motherlode of cartoon fanwank, who's now one of the Thirteen Primes, or something. Thank goodness we had Ramondelli's art to render every other panel incomprehensible as well.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

As I was reading the latest one, all I could think was "this is an absolute pile of flaccid cock"
And Prof, it's:

Fool me - can't get fooled again."

Re: RID issue...whatever it is
Doesn't the latest one reintroduce IDW Spike Witwicky, the booty-callin' beefcake that everyone* wanted to see come back?

I dunno, the people at the IDW board seem to be genuinely pleased with the direction of RiD at the moment, horrifying as that sounds.Metal Vendetta wrote:Doesn't the latest one reintroduce IDW Spike Witwicky, the booty-callin' beefcake that everyone* wanted to see come back?

Awesome. They've got the thing they like. We've got the thing we like. Everybody wins.Computron wrote:I dunno, the people at the IDW board seem to be genuinely pleased with the direction of RiD at the moment, horrifying as that sounds.Metal Vendetta wrote:Doesn't the latest one reintroduce IDW Spike Witwicky, the booty-callin' beefcake that everyone* wanted to see come back?

Up until the next cross-over, when *we* trade a few months of awesome comics for some damn-fine plastic goodness. Fair enough.
