So I am in the news I guess...

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Ok so unless you become a celebrity or politician, getting your name in the news is pretty rare, so I'm going to take this opportunity to enjoy this surreal moment and share it, because I can.

As some of you know I am a lawyer. (More barrister than solicitor for those across the pond.)

I have a client whose fiance suffered an anoxic brain injury during surgery. This devastating brain injury left him in a vegetative state with minimal response to stimuli, no ability to speak, let alone walk. As per normal American legal procedures we opened a probate case to appoint his fiancee as his Guardian, which allows her to make decisions on his behalf ranging from end of life care to signing contracts. In other words a Power of Attorney over all aspects of his life.

In Illinois a Guardian can do anything that "effectuates the intent of the ward." The Courts have interpreted this to mean institute divorces, adoptions, abortions and of course, end of life care/termination of life support.

So we asked the Court to allow them to get married. The Court agreed.

The State of Illinois however did not.

So we had to file a new lawsuit to get the State to comply. The Court unfortunately changed its earlier ruling (same judge heard both cases) and ruled against us. An appeal is highly likely.

I did not expect the media to get involved but it started with the local paper and now the ABA Journal picked up the story, and the Wall St. Journal just called us for comment. If I get my name printed in the Wall St. Journal I think I'll curl up in the corner and rock back and forth for a bit.

Highly surreal.

Or do one big poo in the morning and another one in the afternoon. I bet they weren't even excited by and then subsequently disappointed by Star Wars Prequels. Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

Criminal acts leading to publicity is still publicity!
