What do I need to read to catch up?

Over the last 25 years the Transformers have appeared in media from the exquisite to the scribbled and been licensed to the responsible and the... Pat Lee. Discussion of all the branches of TF media within!

What do I need to read to catch up?

Ok so MTMTE is brilliant but it obviously references things that have occurred in prior IDW comics, comics that I have not read.

I picked up Last Stand of the Wreckers, which while filling in some of the back story, doesnt cover everything.

To be clear I am aware much of prior IDW work isnt...ideal. I want to read what is necessary to have an idea of what went down but neither do I want to spend 50 bucks on a bunch of disappointment.

Is it something I should just wiki or are there a few comics I should pick up?

You need to read Jason Aaron's Thor: God of Thunder.

That's what you need to read.

Here's the general order:

Infiltration
Megatron Origins (set at before -tion saga)
Stormbringer (runs parallel to events of Infiltration)
Escalation
Devastation
Revelations
Max Dinobots

Spotlights (each issue is set at a different point during the -tion saga).
All Hail Megatron
Ongoing
Drift-mini (set before 'tion)
Ironhide-mini (set during ongoing)
Death of OP (one issue)
RiD
MTMTE

I've bolded the ones I think are worth reading. The -tion saga (and anything by Furman really) is decent, albeit not Roberts standard, but sowing the seeds of the IDW TF universe with some great ideas (e.g. ore-13, phase-sixers, infiltration protocol, etc). The spotlights are all worth reading too.

I'd skip all of All Hail Megatron (just read a summary on tfwiki) except issue #15 which has a good story by Roche. The rest of it is pretty poor stuff the nearly drove me off tf comics in general.

Again you can skim the ongoing (EXCEPT issue #22 & 23 which are by Roberts). The writer, Costa, never really got to grips with the material - reading a summary should fill in the blanks.

I got some of Costa's work from the library just to know what happened, but it was fairly wank.

Or do one big poo in the morning and another one in the afternoon. I bet they weren't even excited by and then subsequently disappointed by Star Wars Prequels. Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

The order I ran my other half through it was:

LSOTW (When she was away one weekend she finally caved to my demands that she give it a try, and demanded I give her a good one to get started on, to give her an impression of if Transformers comics were any good)

THEN:

Megs Origin
Spotlight Blurr
Autocracy
Spotlight Shockwave
Spotlight Wheelie
Spotlight Ultra Magnus
Spotlight Soundwave
Infiltration 0-2
Stormbringer 1-2
Infiltration 3-4
Stormbringer 3
Infiltration 5
Stormbringer 4
Spotlight Nightbeat
Infiltration 6
Spotlight Kup
Spotlight Sixshot
Escalation 1
Spotlight Hot Rod
Escalation 2-6
Spotlight Ramjet
Spotlight Galvatron
Spotlight Optimus Prime
Devastation 1
Spotlight Arcee
Devastation 2-4
Spotlight Blaster
Devastation 5-6
Spotlight Mirage
Spotlight Grimlock
Drift miniseries 1-4
Spotlight Cyclonus
Revelation 1-4
Maximum Dinobots 1-5
Spotlight Cliffjumper
Spotlight Drift
AHM 15
Spotlight Jazz
Spotlight Metroplex
AHM 1-8
AHM 14
AHM 9-13
AHM 16
Spotlight Prowl
Ongoing 1-2
LSOTW
Ongoing 3-7
Ironhide Miniseries
HOD 1-2
Ongoing 13
Spotlight Megatron
Ongoing 8-12
Ongoing 14-20
HOD 3-4
Ongoing 21-24
Ongoing 26
Ongoing 28
Ongoing 30-31
TDOOP
MTMTE 1-3
RID 1-3
MTMTE 4-5
RID 4-5
MTMTE 6
RID 6-7
MTMTE Annual
MTMTE 7-8
RID 8-10
RID Annual
MTMTE 9-11
RID 11-14
MTMTE 12-15

Keeps most stories with no obvious continuity errors neatly synchronous with each other, and has overlaps occur in the correct places.

I forgot Heart of Darkness (mainly because it's asswipe too!) - Suny that's much better than my list.

Thanks muchly. It is a bit comical that the lists mostly boil down to "Read the stuff at the beginning, then skip a bunch, and then read the new stuff."

Read the Furmanations and Max Dinos (Essentially the unfinished "Machination" arc). Then assume they all leave Earth after that and start on LSOTW and then chaos theory. BOOM. Done.
