Mars Attacks! Transformers #1 shot

I was going to skip this originally as it's written by Shane McCarthy (and I'm still bitter about AHM truncating the -tions saga).
Instead on spur I decided to download it - and you know what it's pretty entertaining. Based in the original Gee-wun universe instead of the Ongoing, McCarthy basically pokes fun at the whole set up and it works well.
I found my usually-cynical-glum-stereotypically-british-face warping into a snigger on a fair few occasions. Spike in particular gets some fun lines.
I'm not sure if it's totally worth £2.50 on comixology but I'd recommend it once it goes down in price.

There were about three issues that were excellent. The rest were mediocre at best.Professor Smooth wrote:I'm the only person in the world who liked AHM, aren't I?
But don't feel bad. I'm the only one who liked DW's War and Peace and the ongoing.
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

I LOVED WAR & PEACE. Ending was cumbersome, putting it kindly, but I still think it holds up. Dreamwave ongoing was *****, though. You're on your own there.Yaya wrote:There were about three issues that were excellent. The rest were mediocre at best.Professor Smooth wrote:I'm the only person in the world who liked AHM, aren't I?

Or do one big poo in the morning and another one in the afternoon. I bet they weren't even excited by and then subsequently disappointed by Star Wars Prequels. Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

Haha. MV and Yaya agree.
And worse still, are both horribly horribly wrong.
I reread AHM recently. It's still a load of rim cheese. And not any old rim cheese, rim cheese that has been there for years, old fat man rim cheese.
War and Peace started well but ended with an entire issue of exposition and the baddie falling down a hole. Bad endings make for bad stories (see also DW's first Transformers/GI Joe).
Most TF comics are sh1t basically.
For the last ten years or so anyway.

Five weeks in January and they couldn't be arsed to get an issue out?

I bought all the January comics in one go, so here's the third of five reviews:
If MTMTE #13 hadn't made my day, this would have. OMG. My estimation of McCarthy went way up. If nothing else, he understands TFdom enough to write a hilarious, hilarious parody.
I mean... "stylish human?" Rubber yellow boot jokes? And the greatest paraphrase of all TF teamups ever: "You're just going to try to kill us again, aren't you?"
I'm ashamed to say that if it could be sustained, I would buy a series in this mode. I would buy it bimonthly. I suspect the parody couldn't hold up. But. Really funny.

eh - does it feel like a parody that half of the fandom could not have churned out though? I don't think so.bumblemusprime wrote:I bought all the January comics in one go, so here's the third of five reviews:

Point. In fact, Thunderwing (username) over at the IDW forums made some much funnier comics using photos of his toys, including that sidesplitting manga parody of Drift.
But. But but. Parody can be harder to write than it seems, and if nothing else, McCarthy has shown that he isn't quite the GeeWun devotester we take him for.
Course, McCarthy, like Barber, had a lot of good ideas, and had AHM not displaced Furmanation, I think we would all be kinder toward the existence of it, even if equally harsh to the story. I did a column on the subject a few years back: http://www.intergalacticmedicineshow.co ... rticle=032
