Anyone else been watching the new Thundercats?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

I know I'm not only being a major nerdlinger but also quite, quite late to the discussion but still... I've done worse.

Anyhoo, the new series is pretty damned awesome I must say. My only niggle is the theme tune is toss. Why not just re-record the original? It might be many things but it is unquestionably audio genius.

I'm only up to the episode with Panthro, but was very impressed by the reference to a 'samoflange', which near as I can tell comes from those clips (which used to do the rounds in the mid 90's online) of the original TC actors fluffing lines and cursing. Very esoteric!

Does the rest of the series/new series II hold up? Does it get better?

I've seen the first 3 episodes and really enjoyed it. Will definitely catch up on the rest at some point.

I especially liked all of the nods to classic Thundercats continuity.

I didn't stop squeaking for about 20 minutes after working out who was doing the voice of Lion-O's father :)

We only just got this in Singapore. Had to wait for the last Ben 10 to end first. No doubt Korra will come after.

Seriously though - young prince, heir to an empire which suddenly gets invaded, has to become a hero and a big honkin' sword is involved - it's basically the redone He-man isn't it?

Rumour has it the show has been cancelled.

Disappointed - thought it was a really good update.

The toys haven't been shifting over here, if it's the same stateside I suspect that's what's done it in rather than quality issues. It's probably an Animaed thing where it's going down well with old'uns but not quite hitting the spot needed with the target audience.

It gets worse, they're still at cost price in Singapore just cos they're new here.

We got to the Petalars episode. My god, it's like something out of Studio Ghibli.

How cool is it that so many of our favorite shows from childhood got such great updates?

Transformers: Animated was a love letter to the original show and the kids loved it.

Masters of the Universe: 20XX was just a straight-up re-imagining of the original that kept what worked, discarded what didn't, and was generally fantastic from the start to finish.

Thundercats: 2011. Tremendous. As Aaron said, it gets downright Ghibli-esque at points.

Never got around to watching GI:Joe Renegades, but I only caught a handful of the original series, so I can't really comment.

About the only cartoon that I watched as a kid that hasn't gotten a modern re-imagining is Ghostbusters. And, frankly, if you go back and watch that show, it still holds up remarkably well. Far more-so than TF, GI:J, TC, or MotU, anyway... ;)

I rewatched the first couple of series of The Real Ghostbusters and it is *awesome*. Frankly I hope they leave that one untouched.

Extreme Ghostbusters was alright though, in fairness, does that count? In which case it'd be the first to get the update treatment :)
