Your experiences with KO's

Post by Hound » Mon Nov 28, 2011 6:24 pm

I thought I'd start this thread to see if anyone has ever picked up a KO figure and to find out whether it was a worthwhile purchase at all.

My first experience was with a KO Devastator a few years ago. He was brittle, pieces didn't fit and the stickers were awful. I never touched them again until a few weeks ago.

I ordered a KO Defensor set from KOToys, after seeing some good reviews. It arrived today and I'm genuinely impressed.

It came fully boxed, with instructions, stickers, all peripherals, tech specs etc.

The quality of the plastic was excellent. I probably wouldn't have known they were KOs. They even have die-cast parts.

The only thing that was a let down were the stickers, as they didn't seem to fit. I will probably order some from Reprolabels.

Overall I would recommend the set to anyone looking to add to their G1 collection. I think it cost me £40.

....

With other G1 figures being available, including Sunstreaker, Wheeljack, Shockwave and The Dinobots - and no official TakaraTomy releases on the horizon, would you be tempted into picking up more KOs?

Bought a multi-colored Devy knock off at the drug store a few years back. Pretty awful.

Bought a Beast Wars... um... whatever the fly guy was in Tripredicus knock off to replace one broken wing on the real deal. Felt like a miraculous surgeon when I did that.

I'd buy a good Shockwave KO for the right price (and quality). I've flirted with buying junker Shockwaves for parts to make my Astro Magnum* into an approximation of the real thing-

*get your mind out of the gutter
For now, it seems like IDW wants my money.

I have dabbled over the years.

Combiners generaly i have a poor experience, altho the K/O landcross i got was ok, largely i susoect as he is not particularly intricate.

Sunstreaker pleased except for Stickers.

Dinobots all good - maybe feel a bit light and Swoop is a bit weak jointed so he leans forward but otherwise fine.

Wheeljack was low quality.

Springer good but top heavy, can be fixed with cool leaning on his sword pose.

Octane more or less perfect. Bar stickers.

Cyclonus more or less perfect. Bar stickers.

Casette's - too fiddely - e.g Ratbat's head gets stuck.

All of the above though is on the assumption they are for display - i think if you transformed them regularly they would probably break or become very loose after a while.

Had a few myself, personally I'd say they're worth it only if the original items have become ridiculously costly. I had a knockoff Fort Max, G1 Star Sabre and a few others. The total I paid was about £50, obviously originals would bankrupt a small nation.

Mostly for the novelty value - I've got a sweet 3/4 size Defensor with a red Hot Spot, a lovely female-looking Jumpstarter clone in pinks and purples with retractable fists that I call Pepper (geddit?) and a nicely-made double-sized Cyberjet (I forget which one) that I really don't consider separate to my other TFs. I had some sweet build-your-own Minicons at one point as well.

Of course, this means I've picked up a lot of badly-moulded crap over the years as well. They tend to go for spare parts or just hang around the room until the missus throws them away without telling me.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

I'm considering KO for a lot of the expensive stuff too, especially as the Fansproject KO stuff seems the only reasonable way to obtain something like the City Commander armor. If anything breaks, I'll send it to Hot Spot for repairs.

Or do one big poo in the morning and another one in the afternoon. I bet they weren't even excited by and then subsequently disappointed by Star Wars Prequels. Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.
