Toshiba Laptop sound problem and everything else update...

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Toshiba Laptop sound problem and everything else update...

Post by The Last Autobot » Mon Jan 03, 2011 4:23 am

I have a Toshiba laptop satellite (t135-s1309, 320 hdd, 3gb ram). This laptop is one year old and although is fairly good I have a problem with the sound.

In any program i use (winamp, foobar, windows media) songs usually stop a couple of seconds like the program had a seizure or something and then continue. This happens at random, and not necesarily always but quite often.

Ive updated the drivers and all but it still happens. The same thing happens with videos. It just stops for a couple of seconds and then resumes. Its not even always the same time, it can be half second to 4 seconds, its like the pc is thinking or something.

Ive tried looking for viruses and malware but havent found anything.

And today Ive noticed that the sound is perfectly normal in my snes emulator, mmmmm

Any program I could use to diagnose whats going on?

Thnx!

Interesting: try using task manager or process monitor (both available by typing in the vista/7 start menu) and play some music. See if the processor is labouring.

I think what Karl is asking is, when the sound stops, does the CPU usage spike?

Also:

When the music resumes, is it at the point where it left off, or is it as if the sound was muted for that time?

Are the music files located on the laptop, or on an external media?

What type of music files are you trying? Are you sure you've got suitable codecs for them?

Have you experienced the same problem while playing video files? Does the picture freeze with the sound, or continue as though muted?

Just a few Q's that might be useful.

Nope, the pc just works the same.

As it was muted for the time
Are the music files located on the laptop, or on an external media?
On the laptop

Mp3, I think I do

Like it slows down-freezes for a time and resumes later.

It sounds, as Ross was inferring, like it might be a codec issue since YouTube works normally. Have you recently installed any new pieces of software or codec packs or received any updated sound drivers from Toshiba?

The last update by Toshiba for the sound was like in september.

Mmmmm, how could I know what codecs are corrupted or missing or whatever?

Give this a go: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/installed_codec.html

That should (hopefully) give you a list of all the codecs that your PC software is using.

Ive updated all the drivers, disable and enable almost everything and its still the same thing...

Windows 7 is also working erraticly. Having dropouts where any app shows a "not responding" sign and then resume after a couple of seconds.

Ive checked the registry
Ive used Uniblue driver scanner, registry, speed up

Now using Tune up to check just like everything
Chkdisc
Changed like 3 antivirus

And since yesterday used this dpc latency and found that every once in a while is a red bar that supposedly means a driver is not functioning adequately.

I dont know what else to do. Reinstall everything?

I'd send your laptop back, it sounds like it's got some sort of hardware failure.
