Last Stand of the Wreckers #5 (SPOILERS)
Moderators:Best First, spiderfrommars, IronHide
I think every TF comic fan can recall moments when the events happening within those pages were so fun and exciting, you remember not only what it was you were reading, but you remember where you were when you read it.
Last Stand of the Wreckers #5 is one such comic. It stands out amongst others because Nick and James push the envelope and take us places others don't dare to go. It's the kind of thing a longtime TF comic reader wants to see, but rarely seems to get.
It's an utter bloodbath, this issue. Or energonbath, more appropriately. Rocherts pull no punches here, and for my taste, actually threw more than I would have liked. Ironfist, you will be missed. But such is war, right? The unexpected happens and things don't always go the way we hope. Lives are lost. Things aren't black and white, but shades of gray. There are moments of absolute maniacal evil interspersed with moments of altruistic self-sacrifice. As I say, it's war.
Most appealing to me was the unpredictable nature of this story. You couldn't see where this thing was headed. The reader was always kept on his or her toes, issue after issue.
Characters are further fleshed out. Even if they joined the departed, twas worth getting to know them. When that can be said, someone knows how to tell a story and make us care.
And again, I call for James and Nick to officially author IDW's version of a TF Profiles book. I enjoyed reading the few entries they gave us on these characters than the entire DW profile series. Roberts bios are as fun as the actual visuals and brought many a smile to my face. The suggestions of Death's Head harpoon arm influencing Impactors choice to go with one is stellar.
So much is done right with this series, it's hard to give the negatives any mention without stirring up a sense of guilt. But in the spirit of being more thorough, I thought the whole idea of Impactor needing to shoot through Springer was quite silly and unnecessary. Anyway, enough of that.
An "A+" issue, an "A+" series. I read it lying on my bed in my bedroom on a cloudy day waiting for chicken to come out of the oven. I'll remember all that too.

DAMMIT WHY DID I FORGET TO GO TO THE COMIC STORE TODAY

Would that Death's Head be the same Freelance Peace-Keeping Agent Death's Head who, although his wrist could support a variety of weapons other than his hand, never had a harpoon arm?
Or would it be the same Freelance Peace-Keeping Agent Death's Head who didn't appear until nearly a year after Impactor, in the Marvel UK run?
Re: Last Stand of the Wreckers #5 (SPOILERS)
Actually, it would be a certain Freelance Peace-Keeping Agent not mentioned by name, to be exact. Make of that what you will.Rebis wrote: Would that Death's Head be the same Freelance Peace-Keeping Agent Death's Head who, although his wrist could support a variety of weapons other than his hand, never had a harpoon arm?

In riddles I speak, both long and short.
Ask me again, and ye'll get no retort.
And why do you guys read things with "spoiler" in them before you read the actual issue? Doesn't it, y'know, spoil things?

Brilliant!
And guess who survived! :-D
There are so many positives to discuss but I just want to copy and paste my main negative from the post on the other board to see what other people think:
My only complaint - the general lack of shooting. Pyro was armed to the teeth with huge guns and he seemed to go down in hand-to-hand combat! Is it just me or did neither he, nor Rotorstorm or Ironfist, fire a single shot in the whole series? It seems weird, when Roche is so good at depicting battle damage, that there wasn't more shooting - Overlord would have impressed me more, for instance, if he smashed up the Wreckers while shrugging off a volley of fire that put serious strain on his armour. Pyro should really have gone down in a sea of half-blown-to-hell 'Cons.

If I get this, it'll be the TPB, and as that won't even be available for several months, I'll have forgotten this topic by then.
Same deal for when I watch episodes of a TV series out of order. The brain can just, y'know, sort it all out once the gaps have been filled.
You don't think Don captures movement well? I beg to differ.Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:Whilst the overall art and detail is good, in all IDW comics, I've yet to see a good depiction of movement since the G1 days to be honest. I could list plenty of frame by frame fights from the G1 days that depict an action scene far more convincingly
Of course, Senior was an expert at this.

Su is the movement-master. I look at the Megs-Prime fight in Escalation and I see all the genius of Geoff Senior. However, I have not seen any other IDW artist who comes close to Master Senior. I was never that crazy about Don's art, actually.
This was it, and all I can do now is wait with wondering awe for the next Rocherts series. Stunningly good. (What's up with Guzzle surviving, though? He's ripped apart on the first page and back at the end.) It was especially affecting to see Springer's face get ripped off, and Overlord as a fiery skeleton.
A couple of plot twists were a bit too contrived for me, though I can buy Ironfist's figuring out how to target Overlord. It was his particular military genius that did it. And oh the irony, Ironfist. I guess that Impactor shot through Springer's midsection because he was trying to surprise Squadron X? And of course, the mission was all about covering Autobot mistakes.
This has all the ingredients of a perfect Transformers comic. Plenty of action, high stakes, slaughter, and a couple of great plot twists. One for the ages.

It was the bollocks.
I tried to post summit last night but my iphone ate it. Boy I was in a rage.
Agree with Jack about the h2H deaths, although I'd like to assume that Pyro popped a few off screen whilst we see the panel of the others legging it, before he gets overwhelmed.
Great turnaround in him too. The characterisation in the comic was beefy.
Rotorstorm felt more like he was terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought. He had been building himself up, working himself up, but was shitting himself, the whole time I thought. He could hide it up to a point by being brash, but when he was offed, it felt to me like he was grateful just to go out quick and clean. Hence the gallows humour, wry acceptance.

Maybe the only doors they were able to close were the blast doors and the main doors remained open?
I don't usually engage in No-Prizing, but for this comic I will make an exception.

Or perhaps the cons were worried about damaging Aequitas before and were now just concerned with killing Autobots.Papa Snarl wrote:And then a bundle of rank and file cons pretty much melt em down in a very brief space of time...

Yay! More time to spend on my Death's Head section of my timeline!
As for the doors - once they unlocked them, I guess they weren't able to re-engage the Vibro-shields.
Also - Anyone else notice how Kup basically disappears after Overlord takes him down on page 2, and doesn't even get a mention in the post-game report at the end?

I figured this out today--Perceptor disabled a "vibro-shield." It's in there though I can't be arsed to find the page number.bumblemusprime wrote:Or perhaps the cons were worried about damaging Aequitas before and were now just concerned with killing Autobots.Papa Snarl wrote:And then a bundle of rank and file cons pretty much melt em down in a very brief space of time...

I was really disappointed with Megan Fox. With all the CGI today, couldn't she have had six boobs like a cat?
Goes without saying, but I'll saying it anyway...
They didn't focus on the *things* I wanted to see.
