Sometimes I can access the site, sometimes I can't. Glad to know it's being worked on.

As for not posting, I just haven't felt like it. Until now, of course.

The DNS entry doesn't seem to be propagating correctly, meaning that our machines are unable to resolve the name into an IP address, nor are they able to get resolution from the various DNS servers they're connected to.

I've found a couple of ways to get around this, as it's the only way I've been able to access the site all month.

The first way is to add a second DNS server (that can make the resolution) to your network connection, in my case, I've found that one of OpenDNS's servers, either 208.67.222.222 or 208.67.220.220, seems to do the trick.

Alternatively, as the public DNS servers are themselves reliant on the propagation of the DNS entry (which doesn't seem to be happening within the time-to-live of the entry), it is possible to 'hard code' the site's IP address into your PC, by adding the following lines to your HOSTS file:

Code: Select all

74.50.104.208 www.transfans.co.uk
74.50.104.208 transfans.co.uk
Both are necessary, as, if you look at the address bar carefully, you'll see that while you connect to www.transfans.co.uk, it redirects you to transfans.co.uk, so if your machine cannot resolve one or other of these two, you don't get here.

I won't go into details as to how you manage the above options, here, as there are many, many site on the net that explain that.

Finally, there are a few caveats for the above temporary solutions:

With adding a DNS server to your network connection, be careful you don't delete the existing one, as if you [composite word including 'f*ck'] it up, you'll end up without a DNS server and the internet will go bye-bye.

With adding to the HOSTS file, you similarly want to be careful, as you could end up rerouting all outgoing internet traffic to your machine, and again, the internet might go bye-bye.

Oh, and you'd definitely need to have the relevant user permissions to do either of the above.

that is part of the frustration - some people are fine, others not! Hard to pin down the issue.

Maybe we should make a list of people who can/can't access, what their location is (roughly), what ISP they're with and try and work out common themes from that?

For example, I'm with Virgin Media (a UK ISP), and I can't access the site (although, obviously I am accessing the site, but that's because I've 'hard-wired' the site as outlined in my above post) and I know impy has VM and can't access either, and I think EmVee has VM at home but some other ISP at work.

So for starters, we can say the issue probably affects all Virgin Media users, but as it's not just Virgin Media users affected, we know the issue isn't internal to Virgin Media.

For me my access is hit-and-miss. Typically when it doesn't work I refresh the page until it does(or doesn't) and/or click the "Did you mean transfans.com?" option my browser gives me(I get redirected to here).

I live in the DFW area of Texas with AT&T/SBC Global.

It's not your computer, it doesn't show up when I try, either. It still works on other search engines.

its either a problem with the domain (don't think it is) or the nameserver (think it is) - the latter is with TFARchive and i am trying to talk to him/them to see if we can isolate the issue and resolve.

Brend is also nudging as much as he can.

Hopefully Predabot turning up will spur mucho action.

It's probably one of the thingies pointed in the wrong direction, innit? You know, where you put that string of numbers in. One of the strings of numbers is off.

That's about all I know of such matters.

Yeah. And you have to push the button every 108 minutes or the world explodes. Or something.

My brain shuts down the moment anybody mentions DNS or anything like that. I reckon I must have been brainwashed somewhere along the line. There's probably a word that makes me flip out and kill everybody, too. Or at least I hope there is.

Nameservers makes sense. Both sites are registered with their domain registrars using the same nameservers (ns1.tfarchivehosting.com, ns2.tfarchivehosting.com), and they're hosted with the same IP address, so making sure both nameservers' records are correct would be a good step.

However, I think another problem comes in that the nameservers themselves are not being resolved by all DNS queries and as an initial DNS query for transfans.co.uk would be directed to the nameservers, that could be why the site's not resolving. The only niggle with that is that tfarchive.net itself doesn't appear to be experiencing this issue.
