Godzilla movie in the works? Star Wars live action show too

Not to shamelessly plug my brother's website again, but I thought this news was interesting:
http://www.fictionalfrontiers.com/
I can't believe someone might muster the balls to actually try Godzilla again, after what Roland Emmerich did to him last time. I guess you can only go up from that disappointment of disappointments.
And a Star Wars live action show? Well, as I Star Wars fan, I'm pretty stoked. I've thoroughly enjoyed the animated Clone Wars series. But to see Lucus as writer for the first season, well, I'm definitely a bit concerned with that. Still, if they make a real effort to give it a Star Wars:A New Hope kinda feel, it might pay off.

You didn't know? I thought it was made around the time you moved to Japan.Professor Smooth wrote:BB Shockwave wrote:Well technincally, the japs made another Godzilla movie a few years ago (where in one scene, original Godzilla easily obilterates US movie Godzilla...)
...really?
It is called Godzilla: Final Wars, and pretty much ALL previous Godzilla monsters appear in this (the big boss looks a lot like an upgraded King Gidorah).
The 'false' US Godzilla is sent to destroy Sydney by the aliens, and Godzilla blows him up with the Sydney opera house...

Seriously, you get offended by that? I hear that everywhere. I never thought it was offensive, it's a shortened version, same as I call most folks here brits and not "the British".Professor Smooth wrote:The "really..." was in reference to you calling the Japanese "The Japs." If it is a derogatory word, I have never heard it in that use so far. (ASIDE: I thought the offensive word for Japanese was the "nips"... at least that's what I learned from Monty Python.)

It's usually used in a ho-ho-ironic 'I'm being a bigoted British colonial-type' sort of way.BB Shockwave wrote:Seriously, you get offended by that? I hear that everywhere.
As with the 'n' word, it's all about the context it sprung up in. When we were calling the Americans 'yanks', they were our allies, so it's still a friendly-ish term, but when we were calling the Japanese 'Japs' it was in the same breath as calling the Germans 'Nazis', 'Bosch', 'Hun' etc. It has connotations of 'funny little yellow men'.

I think everyone is a little racist to some degree. I think it's in many ways natural.
But I do believe there is racism that alters one's thinking and actions, and a racism that is benign. By benign, I mean, one doesn't act on it resulting in unjust behavior.

Well, considering the success of the TF films which are basically giant monsters blowing up **** stories it's hardly surprising Hollywood would want to risk a punt on Godzilla again.

Semantic quibble, but I think it's more the case that being wary of people from different cultural backgrounds is natural. Racism is the point where one starts indulging it and, as you say, acting on it.Yaya wrote:I think everyone is a little racist to some degree. I think it's in many ways natural.
I think if they give us an antagonist monster this time, and get someone like Peter Jackson to helm, it could still be a fun flick.inflatable dalek wrote:Well, considering the success of the TF films which are basically giant monsters blowing up **** stories it's hardly surprising Hollywood would want to risk a punt on Godzilla again.
I can only imagine how good a Godzilla vs. other monster battle could be in the middle of a city with the tech Hollywood now has at its disposal.
You won't find me in an urban black neighborhood if I can help it. Is this racist? I don't think so. Logic and statistics indicate I'm more likely to be mugged or killed in such a neighborhood. So if I say to someone, which I often do, "don't go that way, it's a black neighborhood", am I a racist? I really don't think so. I mean, one of my best friends is black.I think everyone is a little racist to some degree. I think it's in many ways natural.

Only a fool believes that a stranger has the best of intentions.
Maybe it's wrong, but I assume the worst from people I don't know anything about. I think, in todays world, in this climate, it's the safest way to go.

eee... Yaya, so many bad things have included the phrase, "one of my best friends is black/white/Latino/Asian." I've heard it from people in the KKK, for god's sake. Do the world a favor and just don't say it anymore.
Semantics can make you look racist, like it or not. It's not just an urban black neighborhood. It's a mostly black, poor urban neighborhood with frequent incidents of violence. So if you're boiling it down, say "it's a rough neighborhood."
It's the incidents of violence that make it a dangerous place to go, not the race of the people involved. I have been in plenty of "black neighborhoods" in quiet suburbs.

This thread has gotten stupid.
Apprently "Japs" is offensive, something not everyone knew.I know I didnt. Now apparently we do. Lets let this thread die.
But just to make sure weve offended everyone properly:

True. The urban setting certainly might make me think a certain way, regardless of the people in it.bumblemusprime wrote:It's the incidents of violence that make it a dangerous place to go, not the race of the people involved.
Then I guess I'm just "politically incorrect" or "ignorant" when I say it.
Still, when I think about it, is it the fact that it's a urban black neighborhood that makes me cautious? I mean, I don't see violence happening, I just subconsciously associate it with it. Or is it the people plus the urban setting that make me think this way?
I'll have to ruminate on this. Like I said, I think everyone is a little racist in a "benign" sort of way. I think it's something inescapable. "Benign" is probably not the right word, because racism in any form or quantity can't be called "good".
I think being devoid of racist tendencies in adulthood is something that cannot come naturally, but only by making a concious effort can it be overcome. That's my opinion, anyway. In children, I don't think racism happens because they have not experienced life. It's our experiences that shape our thoughts and feelings to a large degree.

Definitely. Like a lot of people learning a second language, I pick up a lot of new words and phrases from other people and TV/movies.Best First wrote:

I once said, Teme! Namen ja ne yo!" to somebody. I thought that it kiddingly meant, "Hey you, don't joke around with me!" but it's usually taken as, "Hey Asshole, don't f*** with me!"
Still embarrassed about that...

Well thank ya all for enlightening me - now I know, and knowing is... well you know the rest.
Btw, to bring the thread more off-topic, although most of Europe calls us HUNgarians, we are NOT descended from the Huns. They were a very closely related race to us, some theorize the leftover huns who stayed in Pannonia were merged into the "magyars" (as we call ourselves), but overall they are an extinct race now (except for the so-called "white huns" living in China).
Attila is a fairly common name in my country, though.
Now that latter part... always bugged me. I saw enough WWII movies and get that Allies call the Axis "The Hun"... being Hungarian (and yeah, we were in the Axis) I always thought that had to do something with us, but it's more often used with the Germans. I guess it's because they compared them with Attila's pillagings and murderings?Jack Cade wrote:As with the 'n' word, it's all about the context it sprung up in. Heh, I had a similar experience... Thanks to my "faints if she hears a swear word" french teacher. Once in a lecture we got the expression "Taite-toi" to which she said it is an aphorysm for "Good Night". And I kept using that as such for a while before learning it actually means "Shut Up"...Professor Smooth wrote:Definitely. Thanks for the correction - I haven't spoken French since, well, ages... I stopped learning it after primary school and got to Latin and German (and later, english).Rebis wrote:"Tais-toi!"
I always say "Fangry" here. But that's just me and my inexplainable low for the psycho headmaster. (I also love Firecons)Rebis wrote:"You won't like me when I'm... hungry!"
On a side note, you won't believe me how often my country gets mistyped for "Hungry". I once had to correct my UK-based boss 'cause she kept referring to us as "the Hungry Team..." in emails...

French, Latin, German and English. Funny, those are the same languages I learnt at school too.BB Shockwave wrote:Thanks for the correction - I haven't spoken French since, well, ages... It was a direct quote from the 2008 film. Where Banner is learning the language from watching dubbed Sesame Street.BB Shockwave wrote:I always say "Fangry" here.
