New Transformers Ongoing Series Revealed

San Diego, CA (July 24, 2009) - After the huge success of this summer's blockbuster TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN movie, IDW is keeping the excitement going with three new TRANSFORMERS series. Under license from Hasbro, IDW is proud to offer fans The TRANSFORMERS, the first ongoing series in years, written by the critically-acclaimed Mike Costa. Coming in November, TRANSFORMERS #1 starts things off with not one, but two, huge events so CYBERTON-shattering that the lives of the TRANSFORMERS characters will never be the same.

Spinning out of the events of the new ongoing series will be two miniseries. The four-issue TRANSFORMERS: BUMBLEBEE puts BUMBLEBEE between a rock and a hard place with his own friends, while TRANSFORMERS: Last Stand of the Wreckers plots the course of AUTOBOTS in space as they confront a new foe who just might tear the (Dave do these need all caps? CAPS ARE BEST) Springer, Kup, and their cadre of AUTOBOT heroes apart.

"This is the first ongoing TRANSFOMRERS series for IDW, and there's a good reason to do it now. These stories are too big and too important to contain in even several volumes of miniseries. And it all starts with events in TRANSFORMERS #1," said IDW's TRANSFORMERS editor, Andy Schmidt. "This is the best jumping on point for new comics or TRANSFORMERS fans in years. We're embarking on a whole new journey and an exciting new direction."

The TRANSFORMERS will debut in November, helmed by Mike Costa with art and covers by returning, fan-favorite, artistic dynamo Don Figueroa. This series is the basis for the two new miniseries, creating an unstoppable combination of new TRANSFORMERS comics.

Transformers: Last Stand of the Wreckers Debuting in December, writer Zander Cannon and artist Chee masterfully create Bumblebee's story in this four-issue miniseries. TRANSFORMERS: BUMBLEBEE spins out of the ongoing series and is a must-read for any fan. TRANSFORMERS: Last Stand of the Wreckers is set in space concurrent with the ongoing series. Shedding light on the conflicts outside of Earth, long-time TRANSFORMERS creator Nick Roche masterfully foreshadows upcoming events in the ongoing series, while taking fans on a wild ride.

The TRANSFORMERS will be available in stores in November.

TRANSFORMERS: BUMBLEBEE will be available in stores in December.

TRANSFORMERS: Last Stand of the Wreckers will be available in stores in January.

Zoom in and the Autobots seem to have movie-style faces, as per the latest issue of AHM. Hopefully this is just because Don F did that cover?

Nick Roche is on the Wreckers series. It's going to be amazing. It's the only one I'm 100% sold on. The others could be great, but I'm not going to swallow the hyperbole at least until I see evidence of stronger writing from Costa and get an idea of what Cannon is like. The whole AHM debacle proves that IDW's choices can be hit and miss, to say their least, and their assurances don't mean squat until they get a better track record on writers. One great discovery and one fan favourite has been, thus far, offset by two big failures.

Amen. Two exciting new directions in as many years sounds more like you don't quite know what you are doing.

Still, a pleasant lack of McCarthy in the air, so that is something.

Might actually start picking up the comics rather than skimming them again.

i hope you are not suggesting that IDW have at some points adopted a tactic of repeatedly asserting that ALL IS WELL when in fact that may not have been the case?

I have never heard of Mike Costa. Does this make me a bad geek, or is he a famed writer in the same way that Shane McCarthy once wrote a Batman story?

Nice to see Don's attempt to build a career away from Transformers in a bid to stop being pigeonholed was a roaring success.

My bro just got done interviewing Ryall on his show today (as well as Jason Aaron, writer for Wolverine Weapon X and Doug Adams, the author of the Music of The Lord of the Rings)

Here is some of how it went down.

Ryall said the upcoming TF book is the best TF book he's read in a long time and that fans are going to be blown away. He said that the reason Don came back on board is because he read the script, and was blown away and wanted to be a part of it. Chris said the art is gorgeous, though many fans are irate over the new face style. Chris alluded to there being a major death of a character early on (bout damn time).

He sounds real excited by this. Substance or hype? We'll see, but his enthusiasm sounded genuine.

The less I care, to be honest.

I realised recently that I have pretty strict standards when it comes to buying comics. Pretty much the only current stuff I buy is Fables and Buffy, and older stuff I only delve into when I'm certain it'll be worth the outlay.

So why the hell do I tolerate utter garbage that I don't enjoy on any level just because it's got TFs in it?

Solution: I won't. Job done. Money saved, less depression, everyone's a winner.

Still gonna buy Rochey's Wreckers, though. Roche is love.

I'm in the same boat.

If I were to buy comics solely of merit, TF would not be amongst them. I buy them out of hope. Or nostalgia. Which is bad.

IDW genuinely reinvigorated my love of Transformers. Or rather, Furman and Su did. Odd that IDW seem to be the ones trying to kill it off again by reminding me how puerile a lot of it was and can still be.

Ryall's excitement doesn't mean much to me. I'm not saying he's necessarily disingenuous, but if not, he's certainly very easily impressed. My instinct says that this is simply the sort of guy you inevitably get doing his kind of job. It's no good having a comics editor who recognises every cynical attempt at publicity and point-scoring for what it is and grudgingly goes along with it.

In fact, let's go the whole hog: IDW, as an organisation, could have a piece of literary genius under their belt or a complete crock, and they probably wouldn't know the difference - just like they can't tell the difference between style and design, or between fanboy whining and sound criticism. Once it gets to the level of important decisions, they're playing the game on a whole different level that can only be properly understood, I suspect, if you're in the comics industry.
