The board is kinda dead (damn you summer!) so I am not gonna bump the old thread.
Trailer.
The Joker is gonna [composite word including 'f*ck'] things up.
The nerds worked together and made this happen (The Dark Knight #4 on IMDB Top 250).
What are your expectations?
I've loved everything about this movie since the beginning. The marketing, the cast, the way The Joker looks, etc. So my expectations are as high as Towelie.
But seriously speaking I think it'll be at least better than Batman Begins.

I saw it at midnight last night, and I really ended up walking out of these with a "wtf" thought. I thought it was too long (spoiler: the two-face storyline should've been moved to the next movie both for length purposes and so they could actually do two-face properly... he was, imo, a wasted villain -- it would seem implausible that he would come back, although i suppose that they left it open because his coin landed life side up when he fell) and it did something which I consider fatal for a movie: switching midstream from heavy action to heavy plot; it made the movie feel very slow towards the end.
Heath Ledger was exceptional-- as I read somewhere, someone said Jack Nicholson played the Joker, Heath Ledger was the Joker. He had both great one-liners as well as a very good overall feel... he was borderline scary. Well done.
I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I'd rather Katie Holmes than Maggie Gyllenhall as Rachel. At least Holmes is a bit attractive, and Gyllenhall played the role almost opposite of Holmes -- she was cold, but it was cold without a cause. I watched Begins a few hours before seeing TDK so I think my ability to compare them is decent, and Holmes actually was much better. Spoilers:I really wasn't buying the scene where Rachel and Dent are both tied up and talking to eachother before the gas bombs explode. I also wasn't impressed with the scene with Rachel and Batman after the Joker throws Rachel out the window and Batman saves her... nothing there. There was between Bale and Holmes, though.
And I just lost my train of thought because my brother just came and talked to me about house egging escapades for like 10 minutes... I'm sure I'll be back

I saw it on Sunday.
I paid attention to most of the hype and buzz, and so expectations were INCREDIBLY high, and the movie met them.
I think that for a lot of Batman fanboys though, they're going to end up liking Batman Begins more than The Dark Knight. This is less of a well done superhero movie and more of a well done action/crime thriller.

Great movie. Not sure just yet where it sits in the pantheon of superhero movies just yet, but it's certainly stuck with me. Ledger was incredible, yes, though it harked back to the Burton days when the villains were upstaging Batman. Didn't matter to me tho, couldn't take my eyes off him. Bale's Batman voice - its exactly how I've always imagined Batman would talk in the comics but somehow comes across way too melodramatic on film.
The only weak part of the movie was Dent's quick conversion to psychopath IMO. On paper it makes some sense (he's just lost his girl, as well as half his face and driven mad by pain) but didn't ring anywhere near true for me.
I think Gyllenhall was better than Holmes but I could still have done without the change in actress. A shocking surprise when she died tho - but might have had even more impact if it was the same girl we'd seen in the previous flick.
When Gordon saved Bat's life - awesome.
The bit when Batman's eyes were white with sonar - a tip off to his comic book eyes?
Liked that the Joker didn't die. I heard that Ledger was meant to be in the third movie as a Haniball Lecter type character (a constant presence from behind bars).

Do you think there's any way they could replace Ledger? That'd be a greater acting challenge than even the original. In fact, the only actor I can think of who'd be up to it would be Christian Bale.
Agree about Dent's turning. I liked the fact that he was motivated by vengeance, but what I really wanted to see was not so much the psychopath thing as him really dealing with what he saw as a total failure. He's so driven that I wanted to see what happened once he decided he failed.
The movie has been so well-reviewed, though, that I can't help feeling like people pick on minor things. The hype is so enormous one can't help it. And I have to admit, for the first hour or so I was white-knuckled.
Although I have decided I like Begins better. That movie did what no Batman story has ever done for me. It made me really understand Bruce Wayne as a person.

It's crazy how much business it's doing. When you think about the fact that it's R rated and has little to no romantic subplot AND it's got a chance to beat Titanic, that just blows your mind.
Do you think this will lead to more directors using IMAX? I'm not saying that it's going to be ubiquitous or anything, just that it might be more popular than it is now. I want to go back and see the movie on IMAX, that's for sure. I didn't know that there were actual scenes that utilized IMAX sized reels. (if they still use reels these days)

Having watched Begins again tonight I'd say it certainly does MUCH more justice to Bruce's character. But Dark Knight still edges it for me. Nolan's got better at action sequences and Heath does most of the rest.sprunkner wrote:

Gotta say Cillian Murphy's creepy understated performance in Begins was brilliant tho. Neeson felt a bit more autopilot.

great to see him back for a cameo at the start wasn't it? Agree about Neeson, there was a bit of Quigon going on there. Will have to watch a few more times but think Dark Night is probably slightly more accomplished - and while the character notes are simpler in DK i think it still tells a lot about Bruce - the first time he is really forced to consider killing and what he is willing to take on at the end to help Gotham through the loss of Dent - by the way, one thing i was not sure on , was Dent supposed to be dead?spiderfrommars wrote:Having watched Begins again tonight I'd say it certainly does MUCH more justice to Bruce's character. And should we just start a spoilers topic so that we can stop with all this jizz coloured writing?

Re: The Fate Of Dent In Jizz Colored Writing.....
Yep, he's supposed to be dead, alright. He comes off more dead than the Joker, to be sure. And I doubt he's coming back; there isn't enough in his character arc that hasn't already been touched upon.
Re: One Thing I Didn't Like In Jizz Colored Writing....
The end of the "Joker interrupts the Ball" scene. Batman kicks his ass and everyone else's ass and then leaps out a building to save the girl. Next thing you know it's the next day. So am I to assume that after Batman jumped out the window, all of the partygoers parted like the red sea for the Joker to calmly escape the building all by his lonesome? I know, I know NITPICKY NITPICKY. It was just on my mind because I watched Raiders of the Lost Ark last night and there's that whole scene at the end where one minute they're in the middle of a Nazi Island miles from anything with a cumbersome Ark to lug around, next thing you know everyone's safe and snug back at the University Ark in tow.
I don't know about you, but I'd rather have my writing jizz colored than jizz covered.

You guys are the best!
As is The Dark Knight. I loved it.
I laughed a lot at/with The Joker. Brilliant performance!
I also like that there's no real winner or loser in this movie.
The Joker got caught and he probably had a few more plans up his sleeves, but he blew up a hospital, destroyed Harvey Dent and spread chaos, death and disorder.
Batman caught the bad guy, but he lost a lot doing it and is now even more of an outcast.
Harvey Dent is ******* dead.

Genius post on imdb:
I was embarrased dressed up as batman in the theatre
I didn't get a chance to see the movie opening night, so I went last Tuesday. It was an afternoon screening, but I figured alot of people would be dressed up as characters from the film. My mom dropped me off and I went to buy my ticket, everyone turned around and looked at me. There were a bunch of girls too and they started to laugh. The only relief I had was the fact that I had a mask on and no one knew who I was. I ran into the theatre as fast as I could, but it made me even more noticeable because my cape flapped behind me. I found a seat but it was next to these African American guys. They couldn't control their laughing and said "look at this clown". They pulled my mask off and threw it away. It landed on someone's girlfriend's head. Her boyfriend was a huge guy who stood up and yelled out "who was that?!" The African American guys all pointed at me. I was so scared that I got up and began to ran out the theater. The guy climbed over the seats and grabbed onto my cape. It was tide around my neck so it brought me down rather quickly. He punched me in my stomache and threw his bag of popcorn at me.

Me too, but I also heard that the Two-Face was supposed to be the Buffalo Bill to Joker's Lecter and Batman's Starling. I wonder if they changed the ending after Ledger's death. I mean, the one thing they needed to do was to add that short scene with Gordon at Dent' memorial.spiderfrommars wrote:Liked that the Joker didn't die.
