Music from your home country

Post by Obfleur » Sun Jun 08, 2008 11:07 pm

or the country you are currently residing in.

From Sweden:

The Hellacopters (rock/garage rock) with a song called (warning: the video might contain some brief shots of NSFW material) In the sign of the octopus (the song starts after 14 seconds or something) from their latest (and probably last) album Head Off.
By the grace of god is another good song (from the album By the grace of god).

Next up we have Maskinen (The Machine). Maskinen (dance/elektro/clubbing... I don't know) consists of four dudes from three other swedish acts (Snook, Slagsmålsklubben, Afasi & Filthy). They released a song called Alla som inte dansar (Those who aren't dancing) which caused quite a stir in Sweden.
The lyrics go "Those who aren't dancing are rapists (in effect between twelve and five)" and some people took offence.
It's brilliant.

Mando Diao, a swedish rock band that are quite popular outside of Sweden. Here's a song called The Band.

Adam Tensta is a swedish hiphoper (from Tensta, Stockholm) who brings something fresh to the table. His album (It's a Tensta Thing) is really good and varied.
Here's a song called My Cool.
Here's another song (They wanna know).
I'll throw in some other swedish hiphop here as well.
Snook - Snook, svett och tårar (Snook, sweat and tears).
Promoe - These walls don't lie.

Now it's time for The Hives! Swedish rock, or whatever.
Tick Tick Boom and Two Timing Touch And Broken Bones are two great songs.

Bring it on!
Can't believe I'm still here.

Never mind my country, I'll keep it to my city (Oxford, UK) :joy:

Young Knives
Eccentric 3 piece rock band with a penchant for tweed. Damn cute video here and I don't think its even the official one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Yrlgg8Lzi0

Foals
Smarty pants math rock band.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaU6MFRrXGw

And the mighty and awesome Radiohead. :D
Sadly not covering Prince here but typically genius video.

I met the Foals last year at the 100 Club in Oxford St. Nice boys, promising sound.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Since there is pretty much no musical talent in Bath, I will keep to the UK

These bands are who I love at the moment

Guillemots. Eclectic indie pop from Brum I think. They are all about strange sounds, melodies and odd chord and key changes. New album Red is out and is really good, although I prefer the first album Through the windowpane.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=fQR2zias9ek

Puressence. Anyone who knows me knows that I love this band to death. They have been around for about 15 years and had zero recognition. They are huge in Greece of all places, but no-where else! They specialise in Manchester type, ultra soul rock. Things seem to be looking up for them in The States after their current album ' Don't Forget To Remember' was picked to be the first album of the new editors choice campaign. Probably the best live band I have ever seen, and I have seen them 8 times!

Levellers!

If you've never seen them live, you've missed an absolute treat.

(Going to see them on the 26th and already excited)

I thought they were from Eastern Europe. Or is that just because the album title was Belaruse? Anyway, I second that. Is This Art will rock your ass harder than an earthquake through an orthopedic chair.

Nice video (and good song) :)

Swedish Millencolin (pop punk/pop rock) with the song Shut you out.

Marit Bergman, annoying as hell on stage but she has a couple of good tunes.
This is the year and I will always be your soldier.

I'll go ahead and represent Denmark and Iceland as well (Sweden, Iceland and Denmark has a total population of ~15 mil.).

Here's two songs by danish Mew.
156 and Snow Brigade (no video, just music).

And last but not least: Sigur Rós from Iceland. One of my favourite bands. I love 'em.
The music is absolutely beautiful - and the music videos are fantastic.
The songs are quite long, but be patient :)
Hoppipolla from the album Takk (the song is cut short in the video version).
Glósóli, also from the album Takk. A slow build up and a powerful ending.
The next song is a little bit different. Untitled #1 from their album without a title. This album is a bit more soft than Takk (here's my favourite song from the same album. No video, just music).
Can't believe I'm still here.

Feist is obviously quite big right now.

City and Colour is big right now, and Dallas Green's voice is absolutely amazing.

Locally I'm sure there will be a few more popping up over the next month as it's Indy band contest season. Usually two or three really good bands pop up in that amount of time.

Ah fellow Vancouverite. Haven't I also seen you on the the Calgarypuck forums?

Anyways, as a Canadian we finally have a couple of good acts out there with the Arcade Fire and Feist.

Unfortunately, we have soooooo much to apologize to the world for.

Celine Dion, Bryan Adams, Nickelback, Avril Lavigne, Shania Twain, the Berenaked Ladies.....all awful

Unfortunately, our music scene in Canada is dominated by Cancom laws. Which seems to mean that out of touch executives in an office in Toronto decide what gets played.

Heh, just the other day I was chatting with a Canadian guy about the Barenaked Ladies :)

Though of course this month I'm going to see Canada's finest export Leonard Cohen. And I don't think there's a single act in the world I want to see more...

I dunno, we should probably make a proper thread. Throw one up at the archive to, since I know there's a few of us there too.

Yeah I was actually born in Calgary so that is why I am a Flames fan. Cant bring myself to cheer for the Canucks though. They will have to get a better pair of star players than the sisters.

I go by blankall on calgarypuck. Somewhat active there.

Canadians forget The Tea Party so quickly :(

Right now I'm lovin' The Trews. Canadian band from Nova Scotia, iirc- first saw them live in 2004, again in 2006, and a thrid time just yesterday. Great band, good music.
Two songs off of their newest album:

The Trews are good, so were the Tea Party (or at least their earlier stuff).

There are a bunch of smaller Canadian bands that are solid: Priestess, Wolf Parade, etc.

The problem is that the Canadian bands that make it "Big" tend to be just awful. Dont know if I mentioned Avril Lavigne before, but also awful.

Wolf Parade are indeed solid . And Avril was interesting, back in the day. I do admit to liking a couple of songs off of her first album. Then she started sounding like the rest of the manufactured pop ***** and most of the sensible world lost interest.

Okay, I've had a think... and have come up with a bunch of Canadian artists [new and old] worth a look and a listen.

First, five older...

Blue Rodeo- When I was much younger, I used to love the song "Five Days in May"... still do. Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmqZdPoPTG0

"Try" was another favourite... hmm, need an MP3 of this, I do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vw3jUZo9FQ

Neil Young - One of my favourite artists. A man with some absolutely classic songs. "Harvest Moon" [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQXnvNwGTAY ] was the first song I cottoned to back when I was much younger, followed by "Heart of Gold" [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7M1Se-p7uk] and "Old Man" [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq0tAoO3-xQ ] years later.

Tom Cochrane
- "Life is a Highway". Wewt! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCPbL4yA7ik

"I Wish You Well" Very good song. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnUpaUHi1BQ

Buffy St. Marie - Probably best known for "Up Where We Belong" [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLCk066o9sU ], and "Universal Soldier" [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGWsGyNsw00 , song at the 1:50 mark], for good reason.

Also- Buffy on Sesame Street in the 70's: [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALFKIWKQK9A ] and a somewhat craptacular "video" for an old personal favourite, "Starwalker" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkdix1qHIEA ]

The Northern Pikes I remember well. Jay Semko's solo album is highly recommended as well. "The Things I do For Money" [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaoQh9Ak3Rc ]

Jay Semko
- "Strawberry Girl"- I've never heard knocking your bosses' daughter up, then running away with her described in such a sentimental fashion. Ignore the vid though, the old hooker playing the Strawberry "Girl" totally ruins it. Just listen- [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc9J395fDME ]

"Adventure on My Breath" [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2XZdQNIsfs ] Love this song.

More closer to now- The Tea Party top my list of favourite bands [even I admit that their last album was a bit pants though :( ] , as do The Trews. Also emerging on that list now are bands like Wolf Parade ["I'll Believe in Anything" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZgwW-RzD30 , "Shine A Light" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpYtlEvBX6s ] , Broken Social Scene [7/4 Shoreline - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uev2J_cBHjQ , Cause = Time - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiSBAykx9vA ]...

There's a lot more, but I've spent so much time gathering those links that I've completely forgotten the rest of what I was going to post here :o But, yeah... all great, all worth checking out, imo.

I'ma big up the Levellers again, 'cause I managed to swing tickets to a really small exclusive gig the other night (there was me, my friends and a bunch of pissed-up Sun journalists in a crowd of 300) and it really reaffirmed my faith in music as happiness therapy. Check this out:

From around 1:29 it's just all flavours of joy.

Blue Rodeo... okay i admit not the worst, but do we really need to relive the calgary stampede grandstand show 1989-2001. On that note you have to mention straight out Canadian rockers Tragically hip and even 54-40 have their moments.

Neil Young IMO (this may be controversial) is barely Canadian.

And for the record. Avril has always sucked.
