Some say, it's a thread about Top Gear...

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Best. Programme. Ever.

I'm sorry, but it just is. There's not many TV programmes that I just have to watch, but this is right at the top of the list.

Who would ever have thought that a programme about cars people can't afford, presented by three middle-aged men could be so popular?
Why doesn't anyone like me?

Never got on with it much personally. I find it repetitive and it doesn't help I'm not really into cars and find Jeremy Clarkson utterly loathsome. It's onto a bit of a disadvantage with me before it even starts ;)

If I had to guess I'd say it's continuing popularity is probably something to do with it's host's popular irreverence for modern/liberal values (fuel efficiency, climate change etc.) which strikes a chord for some coupled with just the boys->cars thing going on.

Obviously if I liked automobiles I'd probably be far more receptive to it.

I love it. I know lots of people who have no interest in cars (and/or aren't blokes) who love it.

The key to it is the banter. At the end of the day, it's just three blokes (who are all idiots in their own right to some level) taking the piss out of each other and arguing.

It's perfect background telly. People mucking about.

Mmm rocket car... this can't possibly go wrong! In fact, I'd be an idiot not to do this! ;)

Interesting that the viewing figures shot up after the revamp when it became less about cars. Canny.

the thing with the rocket car is, A Hammond wanted to drive one, and B, it was as safe as any other stunt they had ever done.

The guy who drives rocket cars ie, dragsters said, the only way u learn to drive one is if u get init, u cant learn it any other way.

If I was asked to do it, id say yes, id love to have a go.

Oh, and TG is just brillant, its blokes, in cars, doing stupid things. Perfect TV.

Clarkson's grown on me a great deal in the past year. My housemate left one of his books lying around in the bathroom and bereft of anything else to read, I flicked through it. I ended up reading and enjoying the whole thing. Then I read another one. I think I'm becoming a fan - despite all his bluff blokey bravado he seems like an essentially sensible and decent guy. And the banter between him, Hammond and May is sublime.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

I will admit, that their road-trip checking the integrity of Motor-homes and modern convertibles really made me throw a bit of a chuckle. :)

It actually caught fire in a car-wash! :D

i love it.

But i would caveat that with the fact that i think Clarkson is a total c*nt and his books/columns are cheap sh*te that anyone with half a brain cell could write, assuming their sole goal in life was to pander to people's worse instincts and strring together baseless justifications for their own indulgences.

hmm...
