Best year for gaming ever?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Best year for gaming ever?

Post by Impactor returns 2.0 » Wed Nov 21, 2007 2:51 pm

EDGE seems to think so.
its just awarded its 3rd 10/10 score for the year.

If your wondering what games they were:

Halo 3
The Orange Box
Super Mario Galaxy

Im also very keen on this chap here: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/article ... unctuation

please go and watch any of his short, but very funny game reviews.
very, very good...

Anyhows, so, um, best year of gaming ever?

Certainly some awesome stuff about. Assassin's Creed, Stranglehold, Ratchet and Clank, Heavenly Sword, Rockband, Eye of Judgement.

It's a little FPS heavy for my tastes but it's all good :)

hmm, maybe.

although i can't help but feel that its an awfully subjective question - i mean for me the best year for gaming was probably when G Eye came out - cos i had the time and the mates with similar time to burn to mash the crap out of it.

Nowadays not so much.

Then again if they had manged to get GTA IV out i would probably say hell yes.

PGR4 9
FOrza 2 9
COD4 9
Crysis 9
R&C 8
Assassins Creed 7
Mass Effect 7
Heavenly Sword 5
Eye of Judgement 4

Cant recall the rest, but it is all a bit FPS'ery... still I quite like them myself :)

Oh if you're into FPS I can definitely see this as one of the best times to be a gamer

Eye of Jdugement is awesome but is such a niche game. Forget even being a geek, you have to be a particular type of geek to like it :o

Your talking to someone who has more pokemon cards then he should!
Not to mention Yu-gi-oh...

I wanted eye of judgement to be really good, but I heard so many complaints about the way it works, how u can cheat your ass off and such that I think, in the end, the technolagy let it down.

You can scan cards and reprint them but as far as playing goes it doesn't make a difference- the system scans your deck before you play and each time you want to register a new card. So even if you use a dodgy card you can't use it to break the rules or necessarily do better (for example you can't just load your hand up with the most powerful cards, it doesn't work that way no matter what cards you reproduce), it just means you're using a card you didn't buy. It does defeat the purpose of buying the collecting the cards of course (which is a shame, I know) but at least it doesn't affect gameplay.

You'd have thought it would show up in testing though, considering buying expansion card packs was likely to be a big source of revenue. Testing plans never cease to amaze me.

Yugioh was awesome :) Mmm trap cards...

Wasn't there a Halo 2/GTA III San Andreas/New Zelda Game year a while back? I remember that year as being quite good, in addition to the aforementioned games.

tru dat. I think you could statistically prove that the second year in a console cycle yields the best games overall for that console cycle. It's not the first year, where everyone is learning how to design for the machines or has previous-gen games in development, and it's not the third year, where most of the major franchises have already blown their loads.

Well, let's just say it's a very good year... :)

So far the games I've been wanting to get ahold of are:

Zelda Twilight
Metroid Prime 3
Command & Conquer 3
Orange Box
Okami ( thank god it's now coming to Wii..)
BioShock
QuakeWars ( this was actually surprisingly fun)
Wii Sports
Mario Galaxy

There's several other games I'm waiting for, but it doesn't look like they'll be ready until next year, or beyond. There's also been a TON of good games for the DS, but I can simply not justify economically to get a unit+all those games, with my meager student pay-check.

Hey, Mark. Do you know if the new Add-on to FEAR is any good? I thought the last one was actually decent, so I might check out this one too, if it measures up.

http://top100.ign.com/2007/

IGN are running a countdown of the 100 best games (vaguely relevant to the topic :)). Sadly most of the games I'd rate seem to have come pretty far down the scale (apparently Mech Warrior 2 is better than Final Fantasy VII, the game which effectively broke japanese RPGs into the mainstream).

What are people's thoughts on the number 1 and top 10 spots? I'm guessing number 1 will either be a random classic arcade title (possibly Pacman or Tetris?) or some poxy Nintendo Mario rehash. Or failing that Wii sports (which I'm sorry to say I feel has to be the single most overrated game of the last 5 years, along with Gears of War (which whilst a fine game and visually stunning I felt was very much just a 'run here and shoot everything, now run here and shoot everything' fest)).

For the top decade I'd have to guess Sonic will probably fall short (justly deserved just for the sheer number of god-awful Sonic games which have come out recently if nothing else), probably Tetris at least in the top 5 and Gears of War turning up somewhere around number 7. Possibly with some of the Halo installments a bit lower.

I've no objection to it when it's balanced by other things... as it was it felt like house of the dead- kill everything in sight in a small arena then move on to next small arena and repeat the operation. I preferred Halo 3 much more since you had vehicles and a far larger and more open environment, although GoW was prettier to look at. Depends how much you like shooter games too :) In GoW defence I only played it only single player, online multiplayer is supposedly very good.

Hi all, newbie here!

Halo 3 was awesome, I also really enjoyed Stranglehold and am just starting to get to grips with Assassin's Creed, I like a healthy challenge :-) though freely I'll admit I'm a gal who enjoys shooting s***.

I think the FPS trend can mostly be applied to the 360, the Wii (much as I loathe it) does offer variety with Wii Sports, Wario-Ware etc and the PS3 is starting to offer some real adventures too. I will remain an advocate of the 360 though even when my boyfriend manages to pick up his PS3 from the depot.

So, who else loves Hitman: Blood Money?

Cathy xxxx

Hi Karls other female half! - thats confused me!

anyhows, never got into hitman to much, and the demo of stranglehold was cool but I found that I used the special moves a bit to often.

Ill stick that on the rent list.

Anyone else here not played the Orange box and realised why its uber-tastic.

Portal is bloody genius. 10/10 in the edge, come on...

more FPS but Half-Life 2 really does change the format from go there, shoot that, repeat etc...

Id be very interested to know what Karl thinks about HL2, and its sequals. So erm, go rent it, or somthing, and report back, I want 1000 words on the distopian future of City 17.

There is just too much to play at the moment.

On my current list is

Mario Galaxy (stunning)
Phantom Hourglass (sublime)
Metroid Prime 3 (not got me hooked yet)
Super Paper Mario (not as good as it wants to be)
Football Manager 2007 (crack)

I also want to pick up PGR 3, Orange Box, Eternal Sonata, Zak & Wiki & Complete Lego Star Wars

Computer games and the like are a major reason why kids are fat [composite word including 'f*ck'] and unfit these days.

It also distracts them from studying. Soon we'll have a nation of thick, fat *****.......errrm

With all due respect, I think nightly ready-meals and a culture where no kid is ever allowed to lose at sports (no matter how little they try) must take some blame for obesity ;)

Personally I'd have to adjudicate most blame for unhealthy kids to a society where the very concept of children going outside to play is tantamount to signing an agreement for them to be kidnapped/murdered/molested.
