Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe

Post by Best First » Wed Oct 03, 2007 7:54 am

Anyone else watch this? - 10pm, BBC 4.

Great stuff, ok, its mainly just Brooker being angry about how **** some stuff is, but givin that there seems to be a fairly impoverished amount of people doing this and his amusing manner it was, essentially, great.

Especially the bit about adverts.

No, I didn't know it was on.

I did coincidentally watch a bit on Nathen Barley last night though.

the only thing that vexes me slightly is that he essentially has the job that my ire for the universe deserves...

I admire Charlie Brooker so much. His column in Monday's G2 is usually worth the 80p alone, such his recent gem "I hate offended people and I love offending them."
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Ah it does me so much good to read that piece again. Sometimes I think there's only me and Charlie who are the sane ones left. And I'm not too sure about me.

Been downloading Screenwipe while I'm out here. It's incredible - it really restores my faith in humanity to see someone getting angry about the state of idiocy we live in.

Anyone else see him on Have I Got News For You this week? Whoever booked the guests this week had a very weird sense of humour, putting Brooker opposite the complete waste of oxygen that is Russell Brand :(

Both Jack Dee and Charlie Brooker started to have a go at him over his "Booky Wook" (oh sweet monkey Jesus, if ever there was a candidate for a steel bolt through the brain it's a man who calls his autobiography "My Booky Wook", not to mention that in said book he refers to urine as "winky water" and women are "Disneyland for my Dinkle") and he came back with an obviously pre-rehearsed defence explaining that he was taking his grammatical style from A Clockwork Orange - the man is obviously deluded beyond the point of parody, and was about as funny as AIDS. Bad AIDS. My friend read his ****ing Booky Wook as she's quite a fan of his, and even her review to me was:
You are right, it is quite spectacularly badly written (was it even edited at all?) and full of pomposity and a somewhat unrealistic idea of what constitutes a bad childhood.
Why do people give this person the oxygen of publicity that he so obviously craves? I joined a facebook group the other week called "Russell Brand and Noel Fielding should les up", but left straight afterwards because realised that "les up" was not, as I had mistakenly assumed, some sort of code for "die screaming and alone in horrible torment". For some reason women actually seem to like him, which makes me incredibly depressed for the future of the human race. Then again, Charlie Brooker seems to have quite a few female fans on facebook who think he's sexy, so perhaps things aren't quite as bad as they seem.

Hes an annoying ****, though to be fair he can be fairly charming in his own way though. I think he's starting to believe his own hype though.

Anyway, loads and loads of humans are complete and utter *****.

He clearly has a large potential audience.

I'm not surprised there are people that buy his stuff or think he's funny (I found him mildly amusing for a time, his act got well old well quick though) as much as I'm not surprised that other stupid stuff happens.

If you're authentic, i.e. if you just do your own thing because it suits you, not because you're trying to win somebody's approval, there are going to be lots of people that find you attractive whatever you're like.

Best thing about my recent 'Safeguarding Trust' course was that we got to watch clips of Charlie B.

And hey, surely Brand's not that bad. He still makes me chuckle. And I like the way he rants at this BNP dude.

I just heard that Brand is running for Mayor of London - if that's not a man who believes his own hype then I don't know what is. Thank **** I moved to another country, because with him and Boris Johnson in the running - to quote Dan Ashcroft - the idiots are winning.

Yeah, in that clip he's pretty good, but two things occur to me - firstly, making the BNP look like idiots is like shooting fish in a barrel and secondly, how come in that clip he talks like a normal person instead of the squealing child I saw on HIGNFY the other night?

It's when he was on drugs. :D

I'll have to download that HIGNFY. Brand/Brooker/Dee sounds an interesting combination.

Aha, speak of the devil...
Charlie Brooker wrote: Personality Of The Year was Russell Brand, who was everywhere, polarising opinion. A few weeks ago I appeared on an episode of Have I Got News For You alongside Brand and, prior to the recording, received a couple of emails urging me to have a go at him. There seems to be a crossover between people who like me and people who hate him. Well sorry, but I like Russell Brand.

That wasn't always the case. At the start of the year I found him intensely annoying. Maybe you have to pass through a wall of tolerance, or maybe it depends what "mode" he's in... but by the end of the year I discovered, to my shock, that I counted myself among his fans. My turning points were his radio show, an old documentary in which he confronts the BNP that I found on YouTube, and a strangely mesmerising interview conducted by Dawn French on BBC4. He's a huge show-off, to be sure - and at his worst, downright grating - but in a relaxed, ballbag-and-dinkle-free frame of mind, he's funny, charming, intelligent and lucid. The man's kicked heroin and transformed himself into a preposterous dreaming clown; a cross between David Bellamy and a startled cat. He's done a beautiful thing, for God's sake. TV hasn't found the right platform for him yet, but it will. He'll still be going in 20 years time. I point that out specifically to enrage his detractors.

"Yes he's an annoying tit, but if you ignore that, he's really not. And I'm saying this just to wind you up."
