If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

I seem to be a magnet for halfwits with a chip on each shoulder. Some 14yo [composite word including 'f*ck'] threw water at me as I get off my bus after work, I give him a withering look and he's grinning so I think 'what's the point?' and leave- then his 15yo sister decides I have no right to give her baby **** a bad look so she starts cursing at me and pushing me around (all the while I'm thinking 'is there any right way to fight back against a schoolgirl, albeit a mouthy psychopathic one?').

Fine, thinks I, I can't win this with physical force (well I could but it would earn me an overnight in the cells) so I leave- then the youngest decides to launch a flying punch at my back, yank my hair back (with hair my length that hurts) then punch me in the face. Lucky the daft bastard was about as strong as tissue paper so I wasn't injured.

Alrighty, time to call the police.

Their mother, who this time has been insisting to her son that I'm not worth it, amidst a barrage of witty remarks the like of which Oscar Wilde could only dream, then suddenly decides that it's all ok and she's disciplined him- no need for the police.

I smile my beautific smile and then carry on with my call.

She swears at me and the whole brood jump into the nearest taxi and leave. How courageous.

The fuzz arrived quite quickly and took the details of the assualt. I'm happy to say there were several foreign people nearby- one family I think from eastern europe and a resident asian taxi driver who were happy to give statements, a full description of what happened and generally do everything they could.

The caucasian british around had presumably all looked the other way.

Man I hate this country.

I'm still shocked by the lunacy of it all, but I'm at least confident I did the right thing. Luckily I wasn't hurt- the protagonists were too out of shape and not armed with any convenient weapons.

yeah I know what this is like, I got jumped by ten kids from another school when I was about 15/16, used my smart mouth to get me outta trouble, or so I thought until as I was walking off one nutter jump-kicked me in my back then headbutted me which gave me the broken nose I now look at ever yday, tho it wasnt too bad (uncles played rugby always shown me them poppin their noses back, so did the same excrutiating pain at the time not very wonky now tho!) and no-one around at the time wanted to help me in my bloodsoaked state, with one wise old lady adding, "he must have done something to deserve it"

Good on ya for reporting it mate. Some people live in another world it seems.

I got set on by 3 schoolgirls in Sunderland once. And no, not in a nice way.

I figured a) I wasn't gonna run from some girls and b) I wasn't gonna raise my hand to some girls, so I got a bit of a twatting instead.

Ah, memories...

Superb of you to call the police!

I've also attracted my fair share of idiots. It's made me avoid certain crowded areas. Not because I'm scared - but because people are ****** up donkey ******* ***** with chlamydia that makes me wanna kill myself.

Luckily cool people like you exist :)

Hugs for you Karl!

Sorry to hear about that, Karl. Good on ya for getting the cops involved, though.

The same BS happens in the US. Hell, if it hadn't been for some people in High School trying throw me down a 7 meter flight of stairs for wearing an Ozzy Osbourne shirt that "disrespected Jesus," I doubt I'd have the mad-on for religion I now sport.

What got me more was that the only people who actually were shocked, concerned and wanted to help me where the people who weren't 'English'- they were visitors or immigrants. It saddens me very much that so many people in this country are so purposely blind and spineless :(

PS- I think its a problem we've imported to a degree from the US. Well, not imported- more that the same factors that cause people to behave like animals in civilised society over in the USA have had the same impact here. :(

Reminds me a bit of the time I got a kicking from a gang of "lads" in plain view of a police car. It was kind of sickening being able to see that the police were watching but couldn't be bothered to lift a finger, instead opting for the misjudged "let the scum take care of each other" approach. And also of the many other similar events growing up. I just learned to stand out less as a form of defense.

The root of this problem is injustice. What happens is one person unjustly screws another (ex: fender bender then falsely claiming neck injury followed by lawsuit), which in turn creates bitterness. This bitterness leads the victim of injustice of this kind to then become the offender, who screws over the next innocent bystander. Before you know it, you've got and "every man for himself" philosophy permeating society, instead of one where people look after others.

That's what's creeping up on this society. And that's what's going to really kill the U.S. in a hundred or so years.

But as Yaya says... the bitterness is spreading way faster :(

I know a lot of rich spoiled people who are just ***** for no reason. I think a lot of the time people do things to themselves and then take the consequences out on others. Or some people expect a lot more than they deserve and take it out on others when they don't get it.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear about everyones misfortunes. It makes me angry.
I once stopped a poor kid getting getting gang beat-up in a similar fashion, it was lucky I was right behind the car of the guys that jumped out and grabbed him. (When I say 'I' I mean I started honking the horn and screaming 'cops!' and I think I scared the other guys away)

The really sad thing is (at least in this case) is that I know those guys all knew each other from school, but of course the kid who almost got beaten up was denying that he knew them.
It took the cops over an hour to finally get to us, in the meantime the kids that beat up this guy parked across the street from us (I think I was with 3 friends) and we had a staring contest until the police finally showed up.
I say 'kids' but at the time I was only 18, and it was pretty scary. (They were probably my age or a year younger) If those guys had bats or weapons we'd have been done.

Going back to the bitterness thing, I'm 34. The first 10 years of my life all there was in play and amusement. The next ten years was about being cool and leering at women. In the last ten years, I have been more aware of the grander trends in life and society.

And I can say that just in the past ten years of 'awareness', there has been a change in people here in the U.S. And that's a pretty short period of time.

Let me give you an example from my own profession of how bitterness becomes rampant.

I work at a hospital where, as you pull out of the parking lot, there are literally three different billboards of lawyers with large print saying "VICTIM OF MALPRACTICE?" You can be sued as a doctor here in the U.S. for anything. Now most of those are frivolous, so they get thrown out. Problem is, even if a physician wins a lawsuit or it gets thrown out, the malpractice company tags you as "high risk" for each such claim, and raises your malpractice costs, even if there was no malpractice. Ridiculous, right? How is this allowed? Because malpractice insurance companies have a powerful lobby in Washington D.C., that's why.

So you have a bunch of criminal patients seeking to win frivolous lawsuits, who lose in court, but the doctor suffers anyway by having to pay out the ass for higher malpractice costs. Now what does the doctor of questionable integrity(and there are many out there) do? He becomes bitter at his new situation, and reasons to himself or herself, "well, if I am going to meet these extra expenses, I need to make more money by doing more procedures". Problem is, necessary procedures don't just walk through the doctor's office door so readily. So what does the doctor do? He does the procedure anyway....without it being medically necessary. He reasons it in his mind even, that this procedure is likely needed, and proceeds, convinced in his own mind he's doing the right thing. So the patient gets an unnecessary surgery.

Such is the vicious cycle we experience here as doctors in the medical profession. Bitterness.

Same thing health insurance. The one's who are sick here and are truly in need of health care are refused it because they have "pre-existing conditions". Oh f*uck, man, those are the people who need it most! So the one's who need it most don't get it, but see the one's that are most healthy receive proper medical attention. So you have a nation of sick bitter people.

Bitterness.

How about car insurance? Someone rear-ends me here in Florida, and guess what? MY car insurace goes up!

More bitterness.

How about liability claims? Here in the U.S., a thief actually broke into a person's house to steal, and fell over a table and broke their leg. He sued the owner of the house. AND WON! WTF?

Even more bitterness.

Same kind of thing. A thief kept robbing the same guys farm every night. Farmer decided he would build a contraption that would fire a gun at the guys legs if the door to the barn was open. Thief came to steal, got his ass shot in the leg. Guess who pays the medical bills? The ******* farmer! And he couldn't pay the bills, so guess what he had to give up? The farm!

I ask you, would you not be bitter after that?

Sweet mother f-ing bitterness. That's what's going to tear this country apart.

Weird... kids attacking older people?

In Hungary, it's the gypsies only - they once slapped me around in broad daylight because I dared to go on the escalator before them. Usually though they do it to rob you... sometimes they do it only for fun, and of course no-one dares to intervene as there are usually 4 muscular gypsies in a bunch and if things get though, the knives come out... :( I came out of it with only my glasses broken and the loss my pride, though this being 2 days before christmas I wasn't a very jolly mood that year. Since then I try to avoid areas where they are numerous, though I'd feel safer carrying a G1 Megs around to scare them off.

The violence in our human society reminds me of a saying; "...because lawlessness shall abound, the love of many will grow cold." It makes me  . I am starting to ask, "where are we going and why are we in this handbasket?"

I'm in Austin. Considering we're in the center of the state and we're the capitol, I'm tempted to call us the heart of Texas, but that's too cliche for words.

UR right about that. Too many cliches in Texas anyway. I think anatomically speaking that Austin is somewhere near the thyroid. I am down in Corpus Christi. Trying to get away from the beach...always trying to get away from the beach...
