TF/Avengers 1 (Spoilers)

Post by Best First » Sun Jul 08, 2007 6:20 pm

Thoughts?

I was pretty underwhelmed - very generic cross over fodder in terms of plot (and i'm pretty sure i rememebr this one from GI Joe a long time ago) and the art, whilst ok, was very matter of fact in a lot of places - Meg's arrival on the scene was so lacking in fanfare he might as well have sent Movie Frenzy in his place, and similar was true of the 'bots arrival on the scene.

Not to mention whilst i get the 'aggressive' manipulations, you would expect it to have varying effects on certain characters, by which i mean you would think Rogers was the most resistant and Logan would go nuts pretty quickly, but there was no nuance to it at all.

5/10 for plot, 6/10 for art.

hey look, i did a review. Dave, i demand a medal.

I'd have expected as much, don't really have time for cross-overs, almost every experience I've had with them has been a let down.

i think part of the problem is the loss of both regualr writers - neither Furman or Bendis, both of whom i would have been intrigued to see handle this - maybe it was a scheduling/workload thing but otherwise i think its an odd move.

I just find by their nature there are too many characters to cover in this type of thing, the very fact that the Avengers and Transformers appear side by side will be enough to sell it to consumers, guaranteeing a return.

That said I believe that there is great potential for cross-overs, but they are never canon and such all I ever expect a good one. They always end in a team up of some nature against a team up of villains.

I'd much prefer to see a hero or team from one company go up against a villain from another. An example maybe Silver Surfer versus Darkseid, concentrate on a good story rather than filling the pages of characters posing so that neither company seems to have the upper hand. I just constantly feel let down by the offerings from DC and Marvel.

But maybe I've missed a huge back catalogue of fantastic examples that I am so far unaware of. I would be delighted if I am wrong. Which I hope I am.

i'm wracking my brains...

inter-company are usually the worst, as niether company will accept its babies being made to look bad, which sucks a lot of fun out. As such i can't think of anything particularly special. Some of the Amalgam stuff was quite fun i guess, probably partially because it wasn't canonical characters and the 'Amalgams' could be abused more readily in the name of a good story. Well, an ok story.

Then again - Ancient Relics was good. :)

intra-company ones yield some better stuff - World War Hulk is shaping up well for example IMO.

I admit I'm going into this crossover for laughs, unlike that of the IDW books. It certainly has some naff dialogue ("That's the second time he's told me to shut up. If there's a third time, we have a problem." "What? I can talk 'Street". Optimus Prime calling Wheeljack "Jack".)

The art's fine for The New Avengers but the Transformers don't look good, although fair play for use the IDW designs for Jazz, Prowl and Ratchet. It also doesn't seem to in fit in with the IDWverse as well.

Swithered over buying this, as one could (as y'all probably did) guess almost exactly what it would be like (not really that good/accurate to characterisation, might look pretty in places) before reading. Finally decided to get it for the laugh reason, as I just have to see what happens if Cage and Jazz talk to each other.

"'Jack'" was awful. Spidey was funny. Aggression wave kinda neat in that it's such an old cheesy GI Joe-level idea it works again, but not if it makes the characters actually too annoying to enjoy (ie Cap).

Got it. Nice to see that IDW got their logo on the cover.

Anyway, the story was okay. Just seeing Megatron and Spiderman together again in the same comic was the highpoint for me, striking that nostalgic chord I like to have struck.

Of course, we know already what each issue will feature. First, the good guys will battle the good guys, then get to know each other and say "Okay then", and then the good guys will battle the bad guys right after the bad guys have already battled each other. Finally, by the last issue, they have figured out who should be battling who in that final climatic battle.

That's usually how these crossovers go, but you know, it's for fun the way I see it. I take it all as lighthearted entertainment and won't scrutinize this kind of series the way I do the good stuff.

Art was good human-wise. Bot-wise, eh.

A "B-". I'll be getting the whole series.
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

This is the one chance to have an in-continuity reference to Marvel TF issue 3. Why didn't they take it?

Yeah, it was pretty much crap. The Avengers looked good but the TFs were drawn like people. And the story... meh, an alien virus of anger that forces them to fight each other? How 60s can you get?

Spidey back in a TF comic made it almost a 'good' from me.

I'd rather read this back over 100 times than put up with another Gi-Joe crossover.
