Okay dokily a bunch of spoilers for those who desire them (highlight to read);
The story opens with what we have already seen in the previews, a bunch of aliens are investigating a black hole when they are attacked by Galvatron. Galvy has a running monologue about being the harbinger for some sort of dark power, which I believe has been confirmed not to be unicron, but sounds very much like the classic Furman character.
The action then cuts to Thunderhead Pass where Hound is leading a team guarding the 'Con pretenders who are in stasis-lock following the events of Stormbringer. The team consists of Hound, Leadfoot, Road Rocket, Warpath (Whose alt-mode appears similar to the one he had way back in the first Marvel Cybertron arc), Skram and Sideswipe, who is increasingly frustrated by his post and wishes to get join the search for Sunstreaker on Earth.
He talks to Ratchet on Earth who talks with Verity and Jimmy referring to the search as 'costing them dearly'. Sideswipe is reprimanded by Hound and he swears he'll find a way to get back into the war. Galvy then shows up and trashes Leadfoot.
He fights the other Autobots and gets his face blasted off Time Wars style before defeating them. He leaves them alive as a small rebellion against his orders. The epilogue then shows Galvatron at the 'whole in the world' from the Nightbeat spotlight reporting mission accomplished with Thunderwing in tow...

It'sSideswipe, who comes up, sets his laser pistol to 11(literally), and blasts Galvatron through the side of his head. Hound stars yelling at Sideswipe for killing the unknown TF before they could question him, when Skram says, "Hound, he's not dead!", to which Galvatron says "Wrong." in a narration box. That plus what Galvy says afterwards: "A reminder that my destiny is still in my own hands. The others are dead, inside AND out. I should know...I killed them. The moment we entered the dead universe it killed us all," makes me think the Galvatron himself is dead, or at least his spark is.Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:Spoiler question below:
What blows half his face off?
PLUS, the primordial ooze seen in this issue and the Nightbeat Spotlight combined with Galvy representing some sort of dark undead force has got me thinking about the G2 Swarm, which would be awweessommee

I thought it was good, and i was glad that it felt like a continuation of the regular series, but it didn't blow my socks off.
I'm not sure how much of that is just due to a nostalgia for the 'old' Galvy to be honest.
I also didn't quite get the 'healing' thing.
Sideswipe was ace though.
Really enjoyed the bonus pages.

I hope he is shown more and not only as a "one issue" attitude.

First of all: ROAD ROCKET! IN A COMIC!
Second: gripping stuff but not quite as gripping as Spotlight: Kup. I mean get to learn more about the 'Dead Universe' and the fate of the First Ark. This Galvatron is a slight alteration of the Galvatron Furman usually uses. He's ambitious and rebellous but didn't seemed to be... how should I put it... alive. In fact, he mourned Leadfoot's death after killing him and says in a narration box that the dead universe claimed them all. It appears that Krakon of Nightbeat fame was killed the same way.
And lastly: Thunderwing is back and this time, the dead universe is acalling!
Spotlight: Optimus Prime can't come soon enough. GGGRRRR...

Yeah, the character choice in this comic was ace. Really nice to see those characters and drawn so well - the bonus pages were indeed tip-top.
Quite liked this, tho Galvatron himself was (purposefully) difficult to feel anything for so it was a kinda dislocating reading experience beyond 'Oooh!' and 'Coool!' moments.
Nice teases about the stuff on Earth and the meta-plot.

Got it. Read it.
Art: Fantastic
Story: Good, but more open-ended than a proctologist's patient.
I am liking this take on Galvy. He's crazy as ever, and seems to be similiar to the nearly indestructable force Furman wrote him as during the UK run.
Which makes me eagerly await a Galvy vs. Magnus showdown. You just know its coming.
I can see why some might be upset with the lack of conclusion during this spotlight, but because it occurs after Escalation, I take it as an issue of the ongoing, really.
Guido rocks, and his rendition of Galvatron is better than even Don's. Nice to see Sideswipe, Hound, and Warpath. Are the other guys real Transformers, or just disposables?
I give it an "A-". Well done.

"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

I really enjoyed him. Truly a new take on Galvy.
I was at first feeling cheated that he gets so trashed, first by the aliens, then by Sideswipe and the gang... but then realised he is regenerating so fast he simply doesn't mind taking the hits. That's why he lets Sideswipe punch him up. It's weird that he's factionless, and I was surprised he looked the same before his venture into the void...
Character-wise, he's still working for himself, and I liked that it wasn't remorse why he left them alive, but a way to show his ability to resist his controller.
The bots were excellently chosen. Sideswipe is very interesting, I couldn't really care for him before (and Furman only used him mostly in G2). But he seems like the proverbial loose cannon here.
Hound was a bit like Prowl v2.0 to me, maybe it's his first real assignment and that's why he's so stuffy.
The G2 bots came as a surprise for me. Skram did appear in the UK G2 comic, but this is Road Rocket (one of the coolest Laser Rods) first appearance, as a cyber-monocycle... Oh and Leadfoot. Poor guy...
The designs were excellent... I especially like Sideswipe's. Hound is so-so, they could have went with his TWW form instead. Galvy looks more toy-ish then cartoony, the sandcastle head finally looks like a crown here.
It's my guess only... but all the talk from Galvy saying that Prime (perhaps the Prime before Sentinel Prime?) felt the anomaly as a dark mirror of the matrix, with unlimited power within... and the vision Prime saw in his dream makes me think the 'Master' is actually a previous Prime, a Nemesis Prime if you will, who was on that first Ark.
All in all, much better then Megs origin, and I guess we'll find out more in Devastation and the OP spotlight.

Wow, i'd forgotten about that... now that's when we had intelligent discussions about the characters in G1, rather than moaning about comics and movies being made about the franchise we love...spiderfrommars wrote:Indeed we did!Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:

I don't think anyone's moaning about IDW, or at the very least, they're moaning a good deal less than was going on in 2003 smack dab in the middle of DW.Legion wrote:Wow, i'd forgotten about that... now that's when we had intelligent discussions about the characters in G1, rather than moaning about comics and movies being made about the franchise we love...spiderfrommars wrote:Indeed we did!Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:

Yes, sorry, what I said comes across as if we're all bitching and moaning about IDW. I'd just like to clarify that I don't mean that at all and, for what it's worth am absolutely loving their output (barring the Megatron Origins stuff i've seen so far, that's pretty naff IMHO).Shanti418 wrote:I don't think anyone's moaning about IDW, or at the very least, they're moaning a good deal less than was going on in 2003 smack dab in the middle of DW.Legion wrote:Wow, i'd forgotten about that... now that's when we had intelligent discussions about the characters in G1, rather than moaning about comics and movies being made about the franchise we love...spiderfrommars wrote: Indeed we did!

I was merely passing comment on the apparent state of our fandom thesedays where we don't seem to actually discuss the characters and their various attributes and personalities like we used to in the "old days" (tm) and seem to take a much different approach and discuss the companies behind the franchise more than the actual Transformers...

Those Character Spotlight Threads WE used to do were pretty cool.
