I like movies, How 'bout you?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Rented out two terrific movies this weekend which I want to heartily recommend.

The Prestige. Directed by Christopher Nolan (Mememto, Insomnia, Batman Begins) and starring Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johannson in a corset. Keeps you guessing all the way through, very unique.

The Departed. Never seen the original, but this was a corker and the best Scorcese has done in years. Great acting throughout, totally gripping.

Whats the last film you rented out or watched on the box?

Last movie I watched? I haven't really cared about movies lately from the lack of good quality. I watched bits and pieces of Flushed Away, which is one of the best movies I've seen in years, but the latest movie I've seen all the way through is RV. Almost all the movies Robin Williams has been in is a good one, minus a few he should've never been in. I loved Man of the Year, too. It shows how flawed and corrupted the government is while giving a good story, drama, and a ton of laughs. It makes you wonder how Robin Williams or Conan O'Brian would do in the White House. Can anyone say Williams/O'Brian '08?

Telly?

EDIT: Right, cable.

While at home for Easter I've seen The Brothers Grimm and Cellular. Both kooky harmless fun, which I like. :)

Lately most of my movie viewings happen in cinema though. The Prestige is simply fantastic. The best movie I have seen for some time. Then there's 300 - uber-cool action scenes plus some nicely done drama, which isn't puke-inducing (unlike, say, the trailer of Flyboys or somesuch... American pilots in World War I with James Franco flick).

In the week before Easter I've seen The Illusionist, which was rather weak and I saw as a combo of The Prestige (yeah, I know which first) and Usual Suspects that couldn't compete with either. If in the end it turned out that Sophie was really killed I'd consider that a twist as opposed to what actaully happened.

There also was Pan's Labyrinth which was a bit different than I expected, but good nonetheless, and then I went to advanced screening of Thank You For Smoking, which I thought was veryy funny, but scarily quite real. :)

It was couple of months since I've seen it, but I feel The Blood Diamond deserves a mention as it is my second-favourite movie I've seen this year. I like adventure flicks, Leo is quite cool when he's not in Titanic and that ending was superb.

Not a movie, but yesterday I've seen first season of Coupling and it was hilarious. :)

This weekend I saw:

The Illusionist. I am in love with Edward Norton, but the movie wasn't anything special.

300. The god damned slow motion ruined the experience (not the slow motion during the fights though). People walking around in slow motion for an hour is just flat out boring and not dramatic at all. The fights and **** were cool though.

The squid and the whale. Fantastic movie. Loved it.

The station agent. Another fantastic movie. It made me feel all warm inside.

The butterfly effect. Interesting plot, but I didn't like Amy Smart. Entertaining movie though.

Midnight cowboy. Dustin Hoffman is cool and I saw some titties. Also: Jon Voight as supernaive cowboy was sweet.

Kingdom of Heaven. YAWN. Liam Neeson loves the role as teacher (Batman, Kingdom of Heaven, Star Wars).

Madagascar. It got a couple laughs out of me :)

Night at the museum. Yeah, I laughed a few times.

Meet the Fockers. No... just no.
Can't believe I'm still here.

I think the last movie (DVD) I watched was Soderburgh's version of Solaris, for like the fourth time or something.
Actually at the cinema, that'd be the Science of Sleep I reckon. That was really good, although apart from the detour into stalkerhood the male character took it was almost entirely what I was expecting.

Out of everything mentioned above I've only seen Midnight Cowboy and Pan's Labyrinth, both of which are of course awesome on toast.

The Prestige was my film of last year. Just superb. Well, that and Brick.

The Illusionist was pants.

I saw Blades of Glory yesterday. It is okay, if nothing particularly mind-bottling. I also recently watched Sunshine, and whilst undecided I'm currently leaning towards the school of thought that it's not very good.

I have Pan's Labyrinth in the stack o' DVDs to watch, which I last raided for Severence, which I was largely disappointed with.

And I am in the "quality mindless meathead entertainment, but I daren't think about it too hard else I may realise it's melodramatic tosh" camp in regards to 300.
Grrr. Argh.

Last night I rented 'Big Nothing', purely because it had Simon Pegg in.

Sadly it was Simon Pegg being Simon Pegg with a dodgy American Accent, alongside David Scwimmer being Ross from friends, mixed with a bafflingly crap plot.

Not impressed.

What did you guys feel about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2007) movie?
I found it quite boring :(
The animation was cool as hell, and the Raph VS Leo plot was nice, but the rest was really really dull.

Oh man, it was fuuny, saying that, i saw it in the cinema because i couldnt get in to Bond, due to seating, so the crowd didnt stop laughaing and i think that makes things better...

**** man, Borat and a fat dude in a 69er, was stupid but so funny... ok, i dont normally like toilet humor but he was good.

And " I salute your war of terror!" - was pretty ninja really.

I don't get out to movies much in Japan, as the asking price of 1,800 yen per ticket is a bit offputting. I did see Children of Men and Marie Antwonette, though. The first was absolutely stunning, the former...had Kirstin Dunst's bum in it, and that's about it.

Happy Feet was damn good, imo. Not at all where I expected it to go. Saw that one in South Korea where ticket prices are only about 4 pounds for all shows.

On DVD I just watched Galaxy Quest. Seriously, this movie couldn't have been any better.

Galaxy Quest and Children of Men are too more corkers.

I too thought Borat was hilarious. It does help watching something like that in the cinema. People were in uncontrollable hysterics.

Kingdom of Heaven was dull, but its a genre I just don't like.

I liked The Butterfly Effect, tho I don't think its as clever as it thinks it is (I think I saw the directors cut, with the sad ending).

Cellular was fluffy enterainment.

Stuff I've seen in the last month:

An Inconvenient Truth: Didn't really tell me much that I didn't know, but I'm glad I saw it.

World Trade Centre: Not a patch on United 93, and a bit sentimental. A couple of very effective scenes tho.

Munich: Very well made and thought provoking, if a little long.

Lucky Number Slevin: Twists aplenty and lots of fun.

Miami Vice: Good shootout at the end, but uninvolving.

On the crap side, both Talledega Nights and Lady in the Water were a bit pants.

I watch a lot of films. :D

I finally did see that there Labyrinth of Pan a month ago or so, and yeah it was pretty darn awesome. :)

I think it should have gotten the Oscar for best foreign movie, instead of that other one that did...

And action-figures of Baby-eater and Pan would be smashin'. Let's have the 4-horsemen do em'! (they designed the new He-man line for those that don't know what I'm talking about)

Yeah i watched Pans the other week, I must admit that I thought the story surrounding 'pans lab' was a bit ****, it doesnt really feature in the films.

Now, the story about the nasty officer and the resistance fighters was more interesting - thought it was really violent for a 12 rated film too.

I liked that movie. You can either say it was all true or that the little girl invented all the stuff as a escape for all the pain she watched and endured during those days.

I prefer it being true.

You kidding?

The Japanese make the best damn movies.

The heights to which they tend to take their imagination is unrivaled in the world, IMO. And for that reason, a lot of their work is so weird. But I'd say half the time you see something you haven't seen before, and some of their stuff is pure genius. My bro and dad are Japanese film fanatics. They love Akira Korisawas stuff (Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Yojimbo) and movies like House of Flying Daggers and Hero. As I grew up as a big Godzilla fan, the Japanese film industry has a special place in my heart.

Bollywood on the other hand.....
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

According to IMDB, there's a fair few after 3. I've never seen them, but they appear to be rather dire straight-to-video jobs.

Personally, I'm going stick with my 'limited edition' puzzle box set. :D

Oh, and rumours of a remake due next year too.

Can you really say it wasn't real? What about the mandrake root? The chalk I think she used to get into the captain's room to snatch her brother? The way the labyrinth's walls opened for her and closed behind her when she ran from her stepdad? :)

Well as I said I prefer it to be true (And in the story the idea is that it is indeed true). But If I play devil s advocate -well think as the psychologist I am- you can say that the story was made by the girl imagination to escape her reality (like when you create an imaginary friend but in a far bigger scope).

This is common in children who have suffered abuse so they create another reality to cope with the feelings of insecurity and suffering of the real one.

And all the last sequence can be atributed to a before death illusion (just like the usual tunnel like illussions and the sort). And also the reason that the commander didnt see Pan Is because he didnt exist.

But again, I think after all that it is true.

Pan was a magical creature. If he somehow could manage to get into girl's room unnnoticed (could have used the chalk, mind), he could render himself invisible for the captain.. Besides, he was a bit of know-it-all, so he could suspect that the captain would shoot Ophelia thus make her fulfil the last task and he just let it happen. Or something. :)

I like reading books more than watching movies these days, but I must say that I really liked the Prestige as well when I saw it at the cinema.

It's been a while ago, but Volver was a very good movie too. It's Spanish, and has Penelope Cruz in it.

What I want to see next:
- Das Leben der Anderen (yes, a German movie)
- Zwartboek (a Dutch movie)
- The science of sleep

Is Music & Lyrics any good? And that Dixie Chicks movie?

The fact that they showed the girl dead at the end of Pan's bugged because it could be taken as though the faerie world wasn't real. It seems like there's too much material out there for literalists anyway. I thought the movie should have taken more of a stand.

My two cents.

Also, recently I tried to watch Looking For Comedy in the Muslim World and couldn't make it through. Mildly amusing but somewhat boring.
