Soundwave Spotlight

Anyone read this yet?
IDW comes through again. This is probably my 2nd favourite spotlight after Shockwave.
I love the way that all these stories are tying together.

I loved the characterisation of Soundwave and his running monolog.
Furman really has distilled the essence of Soundwave into this issue. And nicely given us a reason to have a cassette recorder in 2007
One thing though; I thought mass-shifting was only possible with the use of ore-13/ultra energon (as seen with Megatron in Escalation). Soundwave, however doesn't have access to this, as he is monitoring the very beings who are first discovering it. So whats the deal, or have I missed something?

He's tiny, but packs a punch! I think they said that mass-shifting was possible but used up a great amount of energy. It might be justifiable for a covert agent.
I-Pod? Hyphenated? Who writes this, some aging man in England?
Good issue. I was really impressed with the art. Thought it was Roche most of the time and was pleasantly surprised when it wasn't.

Got it and read it.
It was good.
Nice story to help fill in some of the gaps that occurred between Shockwave's departure and Stormbringer, and we get an explanation for how Bludgeon was able to acquire the Ultra-Energon for his Thunderwing project.
It was nice to also see Soundwave lose, because realistically, he probably couldn't take Bludgeon and other Decepticons by himself, even with Ravage and Lazerbeak. So it was a believable ending, which I liked.
Artwise, it was okay too. Not something stellar, like Don's work or Nick's work, but things were clear, and that's most important. So it was a good intro for Matere.
So overall, I'd give it a "B+", continuing the strong string of Spotlight performances.

"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

Seems that Skywatch have got 8 of them as well - Laserbeak, presumably Ravage, Shockwave and the Dinobots. Will be interesting to see what they are going to do with them all, they're going to need some pretty big shelves, for sure.
Couple of things irked me, Bludgeon's flags spring out of nowhere from one page to the next and Laserbeak is mass-shifting all over the place, but otherwise I thought it was a brilliant insight into Soundwave's character. Never thought I'd see him consider self-sacrifice for the common good. Awesome stuff.

I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

My new fav. after the Shockwave spotlight.
Great to see Soundwave as his old Marvel self again... Seemingly loyal to the current leader but watching his own interests otherwise. And like in Marvel, ultimately Soundwave does the right thing and works for the survival of the Decepticon cause.
Some scenes were fabulous. Like the ending, when the kid calls Soundwave a 'Classic' - kind-a spot on as nowadays we can see Classics Soundwave in the stores too. The whole issue was well built-up too, showing us just how SW handles a spying assignment. Plus the in-jokes like Mount St. Helens. Or when Bludgeon states that being locked in his alt mode is a big inconvenience in SW's case...
Oh and who else noticed that we got our first talking (non-BW) Ravage since Marvel UK?
Art was nice too - especially the battles at the end.
Some things irked me... when the pre-pretenders teleport in and out, we always see 4 beams, but only 3 of them were shown. I guess the fourth was Skullgrin and he had to go to the little Bot's room.

I think the fourth beam was for the stockpile of Ore-13 or ultra-energon, so I don't think that's a mistake as such, but it's not clear.BB Shockwave wrote:Some things irked me... when the pre-pretenders teleport in and out, we always see 4 beams, but only 3 of them were shown. That was actually the bit I jeffed at.BB Shockwave wrote:Oh and who else noticed that we got our first talking (non-BW) Ravage since Marvel UK?
Liked it all, was trying to take my time and not hurry through it as it were so good, but noticing Ravage getting to talk was a definite 'pause for happiness moment.'
Yeah, second best after the Shockwave one, this.
The only thing that's kinda niggling me is Bludgeon's design - something that was awesome and intimidating and thematic at first is kinda getting more silly to me the more I see of his badass skeletal self. I thought he looked like that in Stormbringer as a result of damage or something he just hadn't thought was necessary to fix or whatever due to his fanatical mindset + being his own boss, and that seemed cool. But seeing him stand in front of Megatron with half a face and pipecleaner arms just looked daft.

I think we'll see the incident that lost Bludgeon his face at some point - hopefully it will be something significant. I quite like his look, but you do have to wonder why he doesn't just get a bit more plating for his arm.
