The Departed (spoilers ahoy!)

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

The Departed (spoilers ahoy!)

SPOIL SPOIL
SPOIL
Schpadoinkle

The movie did nothing for me.
I didn't care that Leo got shot.
I didn't get the feeling that Damon was tired of being a criminal and wanted to be a nice guy.
Etc etc. YAWN.

What did everyone else think about this overrated pile of monkey feces?

I thought it was qual. Not as good as some of the films from last year (Brick, The Prestige, Talladega Nights), but still good stuff.

I didn't realise Damon was supposed to be tired of being a criminal?

I got the feeling that Scorsese/whoever wanted us to think that he wanted out.
He argues with Jack N. on the phone. He's stressed or whatever.
He then kills Jack (the only one that's supposed to know that he's undercover).
When he discovers that another dude knows about him (the dude that killed Leo), he kills him too.

Just my interpretation.

EDIT: He also wanted to help Leo get out. He should've killed him, IMO, if he still wanted to be a gangsta'.

He killed Jack because he didn't want to be shopped to the Feds, and felt betrayed
He killed the other guy so he could pin him for Leo's death

Why not just kill Leo? Dunno. Maybe he didn't feel the need to. Didn't think he was a threat or just not worth the risk.
Grrr. Argh.

Okey, maybe I was wrong about the Jack-killing - but to kill the other guy just so he can blame him for Leos death feels like a stretch.
Surely it must be easier to say "yeah well, Leo had a gun in my face, so this other cop killed him" than to rearrange two bodies so it looks like they killed each other, [composite word including 'f*ck'] around with fingerprints and what not?

I find it really difficult to take Damon or DiCaprio seriously as actors, or even fully-grown men. It's like watching little kids pretending to be gangsters.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

I thought DiCrapio was awful in some parts of the movie.
And the development of his character was, IMO, absurd.

Another thing related to Leo: when he picks up the photograph of Damons wife as a kid and goes "Oh, you should have this on your wall. It's a great picture" right after Damon has said "[composite word including 'f*ck'] this ****. Throw it away, bitch".
Crappy cack.

Sounds like they're sticking with the second cut of the HK movie. I managed to catch that version on TV, where they overhauled the ending completely - the first cut had 'Matt Damon' being cuffed and brought in, while the one I saw threw in a flashback to the police academy days (where the two men were portrayed by different actors that fit MV's 'little kids' a little more closely. They'd just kicked 'Leo' out of the academy, and the drill sergeant was going 'there goes another total failure, if anyone wishes to take his place step up now'. Then the flashback footage turns colorised and the two kids are momentarily replaced with the men as they appear in present day - and 'Matt' thinks to himself 'I do. I'd give anything to be him.'

I saw the HK flick a couple of weeks ago and thought it was an okay movie.

When the credits for The Departed started to roll I realized how brilliant the HK version was.

Another reason for my whole "Damon doesn't wanna be a crook"-thought, was that he got killed.
I thought Scorsese wanted us to care for Damon and his quest to be a good guy. When he got killed we were gonna go "Oh noes, not him to!"
It was either that or "Yay a pointless plot twist or whatever - plus that the bad guy gets what he deserves, just like any other movie in the universe".

Edit #223. Yet another reason for my disliking is the time line (?).
Damon became the worlds greatest cop in six monts or something. Earning promotions and what not.

Envelope was... uhm... instructions to forward to Marky Mark?
Obfleur wrote:Okey, maybe I was wrong about the Jack-killing - but to kill the other guy just so he can blame him for Leos death feels like a stretch.
It was part that, part covering his own ass. Not wanting to get caught and wanting to go straight aren't really the same thing.

He felt betrayed by Costello and maybe wanted to make amends... or maybe he just wanted to eliminate anybody who could point the finger at him.
Another reason for my whole "Damon doesn't wanna be a crook"-thought, was that he got killed.

Were we? I thought that was meant to be justice. He's the villain, we're not meant to feel sympathy for him when he gets executed.

It's full of holes, sure. I like the ambiguity. I can confidently state that it's better than Epic Movie, despite never having seen the latter.

And Matt Damon's performance is far better than Leo's. DiCaprio's all "look at me being tortured and intense!". Damon's just being an effortlessly smug bastard. Maybe because that's what he is.
Grrr. Argh.

Well, you left out the other part of my thoughts there.
It was either A) We were gonna go "Oh noes" because we've started to feel for him. Or B) A ****** ending, where Scorsese thought "I can't let the bad guy live. Oh no. We gotta have a sort of happy ending."
I went for A (because I felt that Scorsese wanted us to think that Damon wanted out, he wanted to live with his wife, he was tired of being a crook, he really wanted to help Leo, etc).

I may be influenced by the original movie though, and sort of forcing its ideas on The Departed (partly because they were almost identical).
It just feels weird that the movies are almost identical, but somehow things have changed.

It felt pointless.

All of a sudden Marky Mark is just there and shoots him in the face.
Why?

Is it the one with the crazy landlady who also happens to be one of the martial art masters? If yeah, that's great movie. I liked it much more than Shaolin Soccer.

That's the one. For some reason they show it on at least one cable channel every Lunar New Year.
The 'crazy landlady' and the landlord were in fact Jackie Chan's fellow students in the old days.

Meh... weak.
Why didn't Leo just tell him himself?
Why take the risk of giving it to Damons girlfriend?
"Yes. Lets... lets send the super secret information to Damons girlfriend and have her give it to Marky Mark. Sure, there's a risk Damon might flip the [composite word including 'f*ck'] out and pimp slap his GF, then look through the **** she received. But what the [composite word including 'f*ck'], lets do it! It'll be an adventure."

No sir. I don't like it one bit.

Bingo. Theres no way in hell that you could know she gave that to Marky. I call bs on that idea.

My guess is that he knew Damon was fishy to begin with, once Leo got shot and Damon was there........I think he just went street justice on his ass.

The last thing Leo tells her was to open that envelope IF something happens to him or he doesn't contact her. He contacts her so what reason does she have to open the envelope?

Movie was good til that point, that really ruined it for me.

Just read this news article that says they're going to remake a second Hongkong movie after the success of Departed at the Oscars. Something called Confession of Pain, which I'm not familiar with.

Mainly because my money was on Divergence. Hell, maybe they can make it a trilogy like The Ring/The Grudge/Dark Water.
