Top 100 Moments in TFUK

Post by spiderfrommars » Thu Feb 01, 2007 5:23 pm

Inspired by MV, I'm thinking we should seek out the Top 100 moments from the Marvel UK TF comic. This would include any TF story printed within, including US reprints. It could be a panel, a scene, or an entire comic.

Shockwave "Are all dead"
Trannis executing the council
Straxus death
Triton Story and the autobot civil war
Quickswitch against the mechanibles
Zombie Impactor death
Unicron first telling of his and Primus enmity (in legacy of Unicron)
Thunderwing hunting Hosehead
Xaarons death
Scorponok death
The whole scene of Grimlock ("we are two races") and later Swoop ("We are dinobots we stick together, we fight together, we die together if necessary") in Still Life
Ratchet "Full circle" reference against SS after crashing the ark for second time
The Last Autobot appearance :p

I think the initial Budiansky return to Cybertron story was pretty important.

Scrounge's death being one of the most tragic.

Ratchet and Starscream being found welded together

Rodimus - (to 'please, i beg for mercy') - request denied (or something like that).

Was this before or after Fixit extracted the Megatron? ;)

Laserbeak 'bombing' the Ark with Bumblebee's severed arm in Crisis of Command.

Soundwave's victory over the Autobots at the end of Dinobot Hunt.

The Autobots' discovery of Optimus Prime's remains at the end of part 1 of Prey.

The return of Megatron at the end of part 1 of Ancient Relics.

Centurion's sacrifice at the end of Ancient Relics.

Spent a long time last night (drunk) writing up three separate "moments" from #82, will post them when I've checked them for typos and, well, just rubbish in general - I kept going off on tangents about the jumpstarters :)

Introduction of Impactor
Introduction of the Wreckers (in particular Twin Twist and Topspin)
The letter from #82's Grim Grams complaining that in #71 they had killed off six Decepticons, which is pure genius.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Damn, most of my faves have already been mentioned, but here's a few i'm particulary fond of:

Shockwave's fake-Prime puppet starts blasting the Autobots - in err... Brainstorm was it?
Thunderwing's possesion by the Matrix "We are Thunderwing"... - Matrix Quest finale
Megatron's realisation that Ethan could had a floppy disk of Prime's mind and subsequent apparent suicide - Gone but not forgotten
Prime taking on the 'Con army - Crisis of Command
The Wrath of Grimlock/Guardian issues - it's all mint.
Dinobot hunt - again it's all good - but in particular Snarl surviving that big bomb (much to the Autobot's surprise!)
Flywheels horror not at realising he's been captured by the Sparklers and Magnus, but at the fact he's being held in Zombie infested territory - City of Fear?

I also love to list little things that stuck into my mind.

-Grimlock hitting Ratchet in the face when he ask to test his repaired hand... (Wrath of GRimlock)

-Carnivac's appears at the end of 'Cry Wolf' to a frightened Needlenose

-Omega Supreme trashes the whole lot of '84 cons (The Human Factor)

-The little exchange about what the Detective handbook says about these situations between Nightbeat and Hosehead (Bird of Prey)

-Wipe-Out's constant grovelling to Trypticon (King of the Hill)

-When Tracks asks Grimmy to scratch his back... :) (Making Tracks)

-Shockwave sitting on his throne, gone made due to time paradox (Time Wars)

-Ravage's confusion when seeing the two Megatrons (Two Megatrons) That face is priceless

-The little talk between Wheeljack and Ravage in the old Blackrock factory (Perchance to Dream)

-Magnus spots Flywheels aiming a gun at him and is surprised when the Duocon shoots the zombie, not him (Meltdown)

-Wreckers killing off the Facsimile Cons (Target 2006) - was really surprised at first read until I learned they were just dummies.

-Jhiaxus going primal on Optimus (a Rage in Heavens)

-Megs asking Prime if Grimlock has a muzzle... and then Prowl restraining Grimbo with "Easy! Good boy!" :) (G2...issue 4? 5?)

-Starscream's thoughts about what Megs means by retiring him... (G2 issue 3)

-Oh and last but not least.... the Chaos bringer is coming, and Primus called together all his children to fight against it... and while he holds a speech to inspire them all - Apeface is eating a banana! :D (The Void)

Here's the bit that stood out for me:

Meet the Wreckers (#82)
From start to finish, a barnstorming, rip-roaring issue - we'd been hanging out with the Earth-based Autobots so long that another story about Bumblebee and his self-doubt would probably have killed my interest in Transformers for good. Sure, we'd met Blaster's Cybertronian crew in #66, but by #69 they were stranded on Earth, and since then we hadn't heard a peep from them. And really, apart from Blaster (maybe Powerglide) they hadn't really distinguished themselves as characters worth following. Suddenly, and following on from last week's mother of a cliffhanger, we were introduced to a bunch of Autobots who were actually soldiers that didn't play by the Autobot code rules, would happily slag any Decepticon who was in their path, then went drinking with their buddies after work and still managed to get into a fight while they were there. More importantly, they counted the jumpstarters amongst their number.

If Mr. Furman hadn't given him a starring role in this issue then I seriously doubt the ubiquitous little toys would have been given any exposure at all in western Transformers media. Or any Transformers media at all, becuase I don't think the Japanese were falling over themselves to promote the jumpstarters either, though I understand they were popular in Mexico. But despite their obvious failings as, well, "Transformers", these are by far the most abundant Transformer on the second-hand market (I have about 20 Twin Twists and Topspins and I've yet to meet a collector who doesn't have more jumpstartes than he can comfortably store, let alone display) I can't help but feel their popularity in the UK was seriously boosted by the way they were respresented here. No collection is complete without a crew of Wreckers, jumpstarters included, and "with customary zest" is a phrase I will probably remember for the rest of my life.

Oh yeah, and then there was the Wreckers' leader, whatsisface, he was in it too, but he's probably a whole "moment" in himself. I'm wary of stepping on Bax's 11 and 10 as I write this, but I think the introduction of Impactor probably merits a whole section to itself. #82 is possibly my favoutie Transformers comic of all time, and re-reading this story brought me to recall:

#82's Grim Grams
I am writing with reference to your comic - The Transformers. Recently, in issue 71, you killed off six Decepticons. Did you have Hasbro's permission to perform this action? I think not, because I wrote to them concerning this matter and they said they knew nothing about it. They suggested I write to you.
I have been collecting Transformers toys and the comic since they first came out, and I have all the Decepticons that were killed. As they were the first characters to be featured in this comic, this action seems a little thoughtless. Maybe I am wrong - perhaps they are not dead after all. Maybe you'll bring them back as you did with Skids. Please let me know what will become of them now.
Sean Stafford,
Swansea.

I'm pretty sure this was the first time this had been addressed in the comic. Grimlock's reply was kind of glib and referred obliquely to Starscream's return in the next but let's face it, after T2006 we wouldn't see those characters again for a long time. Starscream was put back into stasis, Skywarp was killed (seemingly for good) , and while Thundercracker and Frenzy were featured in flashback in #100. it would be at least until #145 that we even saw Starscream again.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

You'd be surprised... they are pretty much unknown here in Hungary (and I'm guessing that's the case with most post-communist countries as well). I still have to get a gun for my Topspin... :)

Here the most common Transformer is Swindle... I don't know why, possibly because he's ugly, I had about 10 or more Swindles since I started collecting, and only 2 Brawls and 3 Vortex-es. Following him in abundance are Rotorstrom and Stalker... both are common as fleas, not to mention their big brother, Skyquake... I have 3 or 4 in my attic and I cannot even sell them overseas. Damn you, Machine Wars! :)

I always wondered, did Kup and co remove Skywarp's brain module before repainting him? He did came back later, so he must have survived, but when Galvatron blasts him he seems to be pretty much totalled...

I like the future story that starts with Rodimus Prime and his gang staring up at a load of rapidly approaching rockets. That picture is cool and sticks in my mind. Also like the "request denied" killing a few pages after.

Also, Galvy flattening Magnus on that fat ranger's hut and the severe beats UM gives Galvy after he flies into a berzerker raeg thing.

Prowl getting Shapnel bombed in the annual story with Ronald Reagan in. Ravage and Bombshell going insane in the same story.

Trailbreakers getting ****** up in Man of Iron.

Facsimile Prime's ripped up corpse getting found by the bots.

Branson in TFs.

Grimlock cutting Megatron in half lengthwise in 'Victory'.

Scorponok vs Shockwave and co in All this and civil war 2.

Headhunt - the cliff hanger
Headhunt - Roddy goes all Captain America.

Predacons vs Dinobots where the Dino's just totally own their rubbish con arses. "Easy meat for my Dinobots"

End of the Road - Grimbo punches right through Carnitwat
End of the road - Getaway is got.

Legacy of Unicron - that 2 page battle spread
Legacy of Unicron - Inferno's death - that was freaking brilliant.

Yay for MV! (#82 is my fave ish)

Old memories may play tricks with the details; my apols if a little off in description or repeating...

-The previously deactivated Earthern Autobots announcing their arrival at the final battle with Unicron by the method of punting the Ark across his face.
-Immediately followed by Grimlock throwing a bitching Prowl out of the door and turning to face down Wheeljack, who would rather- "What?! Have holiday!? Put feet up!? We Autobots, we fight, not worry! And now we kick Unicron's tail across universe!"
Ahhhh. As good as it is to have these big epic moments of planetwide explosions, a gazillion feet tall robotic devil devouring and sushing a bunch of Microheadtargetmasterswithpretendershells, cosmic levels of doom-laden grandeur etc, sometimes you just need a familiar mouthy old bugger to crash a spaceship into someone's face and talk some serious smack.

-"Microheadtargetmaster with a Pretender shell."
Seeing as I mentioned it above, it's always a favourite line. Wheeljack should be cheesed off and sarcastic more often.

-The new Mayhems training with facsimile constructs.
It's not the 'surprise' oh-ho-ho they're not real Autobots thing or the even Spinister and Needlenose thing, but the sheer brutal joy and gamesmanship-attitude of Decepticon killers working out that sparks my imagination.
OK, lots of D-Cons are written up to be lunatic killers, but the Octopunch and Stranglehold get a lot of facetime and damn it, they just like the idea of murdering people ("Big deal! My Grimlock and Fortress Maximus beat your Prime!"). With quite visceral artwork, this moment is both vaguely sickening and yet undeniably cool.

-Soundwave can't bring himself to shake Ultra Magnus' hand after the 'Bots and 'Cons defeat the Quintesson invasion of Cybertron.
Magnus is offering more than a simple handshake here, and Soundwave actually takes a moment to think about what the Autobot is offering...and then realises that "it would never work" with an air of such defeated grace and melancholy...

-The Autobot Code is Rubbish!
Great way to sum up the story so far; the doodles are great but the moneyshot is everyone's face when Grimlock asks them if they believe in the 'happy ending' he's just read them from a certain book...

-Ratchet doing the letters once.
That was cool.

ooh - also, Earthforce goodness:

270 The Badguys ball - pissed Decepticons and Ironhide bing sneakier than a ferret in a balaclava

275 Secrets - Soundwave's manipulation of Wildrider

277 - Internal affairs - Shockers and Megs go from beating each other round the head with planes to teaming up.

283 - Manouvres - Blitwing and Astrotain leave Octane to die, har har.

285 - External Forces - Soundwave uses his video recorder to talk to SS as they beat each other up

285 - and look! its only the sodding Mayhems and Earthforce and ruddy bloddy Shockwave and Megs! Rock and roll baby.

286 - "So? They were tough, we were tougher" or words to that effect - nice double bluff from Furny. I know Megs and I Did It go down a bit easy but to be honest Grimlock co-ordinating a beating of two cons who have both downed his entire team before is something of a guilty pleasure for me.

Oh, and whatever issue it is where Grimmers imagines a brick when someone is talking to him...

oh! and the minto car chase in End of the Road (the lessar known B & W version)

I reckon they did, otherwise it would've been pretty harsh for Autobots to send a deactivated 'con to his certain destruction - even if they were under Unicron's influence, his meddling seemed fairly minimal (fudging their memories seems to have been the limit, not all out mind-control).

I think it's Slag who's imagining the brick as he's trying to explain something to Grimlock. Is that the one where they send him out to take on a snowman?
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Prowl explaining to Grimlock why they need to take Starscream alive - because he's the only compatible donor for Snarl's terminal illness, Corrodia Gravis.

Im trying to work out how to rank them?

Lets say we hold a weekly vote, on 10 random fav moments, lets say the top 10 moments on the above list.

We open a poll and u vote your fav moment from the list.

we continue this untill we have 12 'finnalists'

then we place these 12 results against each other in a cup knock out style system.

we all vote for each tie, untill we have two finnalists.

and voila we have the best TF:marvel moment G1!

or somthing like that? to complicated?
