Computer problem

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Computer problem

Post by The Last Autobot » Mon Oct 09, 2006 6:16 am

I know a few of you know a lot of pcs so here is the deal. A couple of weeks ago my pc went offline all of a sudden and I couldnt start it again, the board bell thing started to ring.

A couple of hours after I started It and It opened w/o any trouble.

A few days after the same thing happened and when I started it, it said that and overheating problem occured so It shut down.

Today it happened again, so I opened the case and cleaned it with a dust remover spray.

I started again and the message of overheating appeared again.

What do you think?
A cooler is not working?

Thnx!

Try booting up with the case open, so you can see what's going on during bootup.

Look for things such as fans not running properly or chips that look as if there should be something stuck on them (e.g. heat sinks).

Also, it's possible that your pc has been overclocked, so when booting up, try to take a note of any numbers, especially ones that look as if they refer to the clock speed, or what the normal clock speed should be.

Text wrap tends to be overrated, I usually pull the edges a bit and the text comes out ok.

Only ever seen what Besty's describing happen with numerical cell formats. Text cell formats usually just show part of the text, or, more generally, display it in neighbouring cells when empty.

Just tried to make a text cell show #########, but to no avail.

balls.

i even imported it into a newer piece of excel and it still does it. And dropping it into notepad and back t get rid of any characters.

here's the text (which also gives you an insight into the sexyness of my day job):

- Would normally expect more effort at this stage to ensure stakeholder buy in and accurate capture of scope.
- What are the inputs to this task?
- Is there any contingency here for issues that may emerge?
- How does this tie into the Scope definition?
- Again, does this not require the input of the COE?
- Who are the stakeholders?
- is this on target?

Take it to the bridge.

Sounds like the - in front is making Excel think it's something other than text. Is all that in same cell btw?

How do you do that, out of interest, as whenever I paste it into excel, each line appears in a different row.

Also, perhaps red-herringly, I have found a way to make it show up as a column of #NAME?

double click into the cell before hitting paste.

After pasting the text, hit Enter (it turns into ##########).
Now right click the cell -> Format Cells.
Choose "Custom" then "Standard".
It turns into text, but the cell is ****** up though. Or well... the text doesn't overlap into another cell, like text usually does.
I'll see if I can find a solution for that.
Can't believe I'm still here.

Ah, and now I get the ########.

Had a looksee, played about with different categories and turning wrap off and on.

As far as I can tell, to make it show the text, it needs to be Category General and with the hyphens removed.
