'Flat mafia' is pretty strong here in Hungary. They mostly target elderly and uneducated people and talk them into (through close friends) to take a mortgage on the flat to afford some credit... then they come back and ask for the money - guy can't pay, they take his flat, and they end up on the streets. I heard lots of stories about this.
The worst thing in this, the scam can only be done with the assistance of some solicitor, and there are lots of crooked solicitors here working for the mafia. Sadly no goverment thus far made any attempt to stop this, although it could easily be done with a few laws.
