Right! Thats it......

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Right! Thats it......

...I'm looking for another job. More importantly, with another organisation.

I've been fed-up for a while, but I decided to try and persue some senior technical roles within my current organisation. As suitable vacancies have appeared over the last few weeks, I called the managers involved for a casual chat (because they always recomend that), and have been left in no doubt that I'm "not quite what we're looking for".

So, another job appears - the role was made for me! I have the casual chat with the manager and get the subtle hints of "not quite what we're looking for". But I say f*** it and apply anyway cos I could do the job. Without-doubt. "And I'll prove it" says I!

The interviews are tommorrow. I've heard nothing so I called HR. No, I've not been shortlisted. And they couldn't even be arsed to tell me until I phoned.

The feedback. I have no managerial experience. I point out that;
a) This is a technical role - no man-management
b) That isn't specified in the job spec.

"Ah", she says. "but everyone else who applied was team-leader or above"

And, in a sudden epipheny, I see why this place is so poorly run. The managment decisions are based on technical advice from ex-managers (now in senior technical roles) who have been removed the the technical side for years and don't have a clue about what really happens on the ground anymore!!!!!

And why should you be worried? Because I work for a major non-departmental government body. If all the other "Agencies" (as Blair & Co seem to like calling them) are run like this then your £taxes are well and truly getting pissed up the wall :x

Argh. :(

Sorry for the rant. I'm at work now, but finding it hard to concentrate today. Don't know why
Needed to get that off my chest. Better now :D

Right, has the accepted style of CV changed in the last 8 years, cos mine is slightly out of date?

"Have you any idea how to do the job?"
"No."
"Have you ever been in charge of somebody?"
"Yes."
"You're hired!"

:(

Sounds like a bit of an old boys club. Jobs given to people who've been in the system for ages, rather than people who can actually do them.
Grrr. Argh.

Yeah, I think there is an element of that. Although the 'random tickbox' committee interview method now employed is suposed to elimate bias.

I mean, I could bite the bullet and start applying for Team leader roles as 'development opportunities' to get where I would like to be but:
a) I not a team leader-type person
b) I would take the job knowing that I would be leaving the team again at the first opportunity. In my book thats called 'f*****-people-over'. However, the organisation seem to actually want this instability. I've had seven team leaders in 5 years. The team works largely because we've learned to 'manage' whichever fool gets appointed as our leader. The job should be for someone comitted to improving things, but its just seen as a stepping stone.

Argh. I'm getting angry again :x

if you have been the consistant point in the team you may actually be not giving yourself enough credit in terms of your man management abilities.

however as you say if TL is just a stepping stone there are other reasons not to do it.

i feel my career has been railroaded a bit at the moment, so i'm looking for a change (probably in the same organisation) - its a bit of a punt though, rather than actively persuing something i really want to do.

if i know what that was i'd be sorted.

anyway - good luck chief.

From what I can tell, working in the NHS, it's like that throughout the government and public sectors.

And they do other stupid things, like instigating new policies, not because they improve the situation, but so that when they go there'll be a legacy to them, or dismissing the lower rungs, who spend all their time using particular software/equipment, when they want something that isn't possible/sensible done because they half-remember something from a conference they went to several years earlier.

Actually, you have echoed the point a couple of my colueges have made while I've been ranting at them. It may have been just to make me shut-up though
