For the last, oh I don't know, six years or so, I've done a whole lot of complaining about the United States, the country I've lived in all my life. I've bitched and moaned about everything from the insane, incompetant media to the ridiculous usage of the legal system, to the actions of the current administration. I've watched as the freedoms that used to adequately wash away the bad taste the facts of history left in my mouth were altered, amended, bastardized, and, often, discarded completely. I have seen ordinary people demonized for loving the wrong people by the same government that has committed unquestionable war crimes themselves. I have seen, and had, enough. I'm leaving. I'm leaving the United States. My passport's being processed, my visa is pending, my apartment is ready, and my plane leaves on October 21st.
I've never felt so good about a decision in my entire life.
Free at last! Free at last! Hail Satan, I'm free at last!

Where is there to go? The rest of the free world is going through the same s***. I can't think of anywhere that doesn't have the same/similar issues to get up your nose.
You'll only be angry in another country!
Stand and fight. For evil it triumph, all it takes is for good men (and women) to do nothing (or however the quote goes! ).

No, he's not telling. But knowing Smooth, I'd say the Vatican. Or Amsterdam.

It would be, wouldn't it? I've enjoyed hunting for different prefixes to my name over the past few years. "Mr." never really did it for me. "Reverend" was fun for awhile, but it's lost its charm. The last few years I've been working towards actually having becoming a real "professor," but that's not a legal title. I really thought I'd stop trying to upgrade once I traded "Reverend" for "Doctor," but "Pope," THAT would be amusing.Legion wrote:Pope Smooth 1st?Shanti418 wrote: the Vatican
Now, that'd be something!
Pope Richard Kevin Smooth the 1st? Has a nice ring to it.

Intersetingly in all countries outside the USA if you start a topic saying "i'm leaving" and then don't say where you are going to they break your legs before calling the ambulance.
the ambulance driver will then kick you in the nuts and drive off.
This happens in all countries outside America. And rightly so.
but, by way of Devil's advocate the grass is also sometimes greener. getting hung up on where your parents happend to have you seems kind of a waste of time.

It was just a nicer way of saying "Im going to laugh my ass off when you start bitching about wherever you wind up and realize that maybe you didnt have it so bad here."Best First wrote:Intersetingly in all countries outside the USA if you start a topic saying "i'm leaving" and then don't say where you are going to they break your legs before calling the ambulance.

My main reasons as far as I can tell for not leaving Texas myself when given the first chance is:
1. I can only speak English and a bit of Spanish.
2. Mexican Food.
That's the great thing about where I live, LROP can back me up on this, we're Texans first and Americans second.
Of course there ARE the cons....
1. Hot. Like it's hot more so than where you're at right now. Which actually brings me to a different point......
Northeners ALWAYS look down on us during the winter, when we some ice on the streets, and we act like it's a natural disaster and shut down everything. Well, you know what? We're not prepared for that type of stuff. We don't have millions of dollars of infrastructure for such events. We don't know how to drive on ice. We don't know how to deal with accumulating falling snow. When these things happen, it's a vacation for us, and we all stand around in awe and do stupid things like try and drive on the ice instead of walk.
But oh ho, Northeners...now the shoe is on the other foot, no? All of a sudden it's HOT up there, and YOU don't have the infrastructure to deal with it, and you think you're living in some sort of Hell on Earth just because the temperature has been above 90 F for a month or so. No air conditioning in the London Underground? Now that must be hot. Here, blowing massive amount of electricity on air conditioning, wearing white shirts and swimming, always swimming. It's what we do.
2. The majority of the women here are either A, extremely religious, B, boring in bed, or C, a little of both.

I feel that way a little bit myself, given that I'm a Californian. Of course, the majority of the women there are, well, let's just say I wish they all could be California girls.

My major reasons for moving to another country would be: 1) to take advantage of some socialized health care system. I have had the hardest time through college getting and keeping any kind of health insurance. The last time I got really sick, I had to go home from the doctor's office and collect my W-2s and pay stubs just to prove that I should get some kind of financial assistance. In the long run, I ended up having to pay the full, uninsured bill anyway. I'm not saying socilaized health care doesn't have it's drawbacks, but at least I wouldn't have to worry about it. 2) to NOT be a citizen of the country most likely to be nuked off the face of the planet. I am tired of my government playing world watchdog to a bunch of unstable fanatics and expecting no reparations. Of course when Madrid and London aren't safe either, I don't have a lot of options.
But America has good stuff. We have an overabundance of food. All my friends are here. And it's a culture that evolves quickly, no matter what Bush says about immigration. I have applied for jobs in other countries, but I plan to come back for grad school on the West Coast, and never go more than two miles inland.[/i]
