ok, i'm just throwing this out here...
i'm pretty sick of my job, the money's great but the job itself is ****ing soulless and the people that run the company, or at least my area of it, are not people i want to be like, so i 'm thinking its time for some kind of chnage.
but i have little idea what, ideally i'd like to do something a bit mroe rewarding, but i really want to stay in london which means i also need something that pays a half decent wage, i'm a bit concerned these areas may be somewhat mutually exclusive.
basically who likes their job or has any particular advice about 'worthwhile' careers?

Wish I could help, but I am neither in London nor am I in anything resembling a 'career'...
Though y'could try looking about online, s'what I do when I'm stumped. I've come across the odd interesting thing/idea through doing.
Or you could join the circus.
... Or you could become a hooker, and join the circus. I'm sure there's people who would pay good money for a little bit of freaky circus lovin'...

Re: Career change
That rules out the public sector then! My problem is often that the most rewarding jobs are in the public sector and pay peanuts.Best First wrote:i also need something that pays a half decent wage
Does your expertise lend itself to consultancy in any form? Thats always a licence to print money!

This is what I did last year.snarl wrote:
Would there be a financial problem if you quit then had a real think and had the time to really pursue what you wanted to do?
I remember you lot were very supportive of my dilemma.
In the end it worked out and I'm a lot happier. Though it kinda crippled me financially and I'm still having to crawl it back, but no regrets.
Good luck BF. I do believe when one is happy in their job the rest follows suit.

Hm, tell you what- remember those funny career aptitude tests you used to take in school? You could do one of those, if you've not considered it already. The way you answer the questions now would also reflect who you are (rather than who you were in school) and perhaps some subconscious desires for your next job as well as what you've learnt dissatisfies you with your current one.

I'd recomend teaching.Best First wrote:that's what i do now.
specialities are:
utilities industry
process design
scope management
the last 2 aren't so bad but utilities does not massively float my boat.
It's bloody hard but damn rewarding. I love it dispite the hardships. I'd look into it and with your experience and qualifcations you could jump up the point scale.
The NHS and other areas of the service sector are always looking for people from business.
Prehaps a job in the civil service. You get a job in a productive service department and you could feel the rewards.

Start your own business! Pretty tough, especially if you're dependent on clients (like, always?!).
But creating stuff is cool. It's fun to build things, and you can make money too. Plus other people can use it (hopefully).
There's a lot of planning involved, specialised skill, social stuff, and all that.
In that sense, I can recommend it!
All the best!

If it weren't the current climate in the NHS, I'd recommend trying for Departmental Project Manager for a PCT (not as grandiose as it sounds), but given that I'm seeing the house of cards starting to visibly crumble from the inside, I'd give it a few years to settle first.Jetfire wrote:The NHS and other areas of the service sector are always looking for people from business.

But the Public Sector is always crying out for workforce. Pay's not quite as good as Private sector, tho.

Me and the missus were entertaining notions of packing it all in to run a village pub and craft shop the other weekend. Leave the smoke behind and find a nice place in the country that needs renovating.
I too have been looking to leave my job recently. I'm not sure it's where the future's at. However, they just sent through travel arrangements to go to SF again, so obviously I'm dragging my feet a little bit on the way out Gonna look for something in web again, but with a bit more emphasis on "team" this time.
Dunno what to suggest. I find my job can be rewarding, on other days very crushing. It all depends on what kind of day you have.

When are you going to Frisco, Rob?
(Wheels are spinning) It's something like a nine-hour drive from here. About a weekend's work, and it would be an excuse to drop by my grandma's. If somehow you could get them to fly you out of SLC we could drive around those crazy red rock formations here in the U state.

Well I'm there from 27th May to 2nd June, which won't be very long, and on the Monday-Thursday I'll be working 9-5 as well, so I dunno if we'll get chance to really expore this timesprunkner wrote:When are you going to Frisco, Rob?

I went to Yo Sushi for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It was amazing.Metal Vendetta wrote:None, other than hanging in SF with my lady - if you can make it, we could have a sweet day out, I know a lovely little place that does awesome sushi
The career change thing is a similar situation for me. Except I want to move to London and start afresh. It's hard as I love my current job.
