If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Can I get an ARG! ARG!
Post

Dudes.
My laptop was just completely fried.
Hopefully it's just the display and I can retrieve the school stuff I was working on. But my laptop is completely gone. And since it's a Mac, I can't even ask most people for help.
Arg. Arg.

Arrrr matey!
...sorry, did I misread the title?
Get a 2.5-3.5" laptop HD adapter, plug it into your desktop and use a Linux boot disk to retrieve the data from the disk you want- then just copy it over to a USB device or somesuch. Knoppix is great as a rescue CD in such circumstances.

I sense more than coincidence afoot.
I agree with Karl's plan of action, but if it were me, I'd cut out the middleman so to speak and just get a 2.5" USB adapter. Saves copying and copying again.
Umm, do Macs come equipped with USB ports?

Would that work if his desktop is a PC? Since Macs use a different file system to Windows and windows tends to die on things it doesn't know. Course if its a Mac he's set

I was actually thinking more along the lines of once all the data had been relocated, the HD could then be wiped and used as a higher capacity USB drive. ?That's if the HD wasn't the fault.
Knoppix can handle USB drives, right?

Actually, a lesson in Mac simplicity:
One plugs in the firewire cable (incidentally a friend's old iPod cable). One turns on the laptop while holding down "t." If one's laptop decides to behave itself, it transfers everything automatically to one's other computer, which happens to also be a Mac.
I know. I'm a whore.
Now, who has practical advice on how to afford a new one?

I was just on myspace and playing one of those little games. It said "Hit Simon Cowell in the Face and Get a Free Laptop!" Sadly, I am now seriously considering this promotional thingie.

While I am now seriously considering applying for The X Factor, just for the chance to win a free laptop.

You work in the Internet? Do you email yourself into work or feed yourself into your ADSL modem-router? :3
