Posted earlier at TFA. Might as well do it here also...
Anyone else seen this? Anyone else read the book?
Oh, wait, I forgot where I was...
Oh well.
This movie rocks. I was worried when I picked it up, seeing as how I've had the book since it came out and have reread it many, many times since... but I love this movie. I don't care if half of the actresses are Chinese, I don't care if everyone in the movie apparently speaks English-with-only-slight-accents and are able to communicate with the American generals/soldiers perfectly when they are supposedly at a time in history when most Japanese didn't speak any English at all... it's a beautiful movie. And the people picked for each part-brilliant. Mameha couldn't have been better cast imo.
I've loved the book for years, and this movie-utterly beautiful, brilliant adaptation, and for me it was completely engrossing. It stuck as closely to the book as it could while at the same time making it's own way, y'know?
Loved it. Am watching it again. I'm so buying it when I get the chance...
Oh, I'm a pessimist. I'll find something to bitch about eventually. Right now though- end of first viewing. Me wuvs.
Aaaaand I've apparently just stayed up all night watching it/various featurettes on the extras disk. I think I see daylight outside!
As featurettes go, they're really stretching it with the Chef Nobu bits, though...

Yeah, after the initial bit it didn't stand up to repeated viewings for me, either... and I tried. I really tried to like it. :/
It's odd though. I'm more sad than I am annoyed that it's a poor rendition of a book I love. I still quite like parts of it [and I still quite like Mameha, though she seems a bit bland now] , but that's more for the book's sake... the entire language/accents thing pisses me off. I think it would have been a hell of a lot better had they just subtitled it.
