You've basically got three different types of odds:
- Odds on = something is likely to happen. 4-5 is odds on.
- Evens = there's an equal chance either way.
- Odds against = it's not really expected. 3-1 is odds against.
The numbers reflect how much the bookies are willing to bet you on something happening. If they offer odds of 40-1 for something, it means that they're willing to give you back 40 times what you bet, should you win; because they reckon it won't happen.
3-1 means they don't think it's gonna happen, but they're not prepared to fork out a huge amount. Low odds is basically inviting lots of losing bets, to cover their expenses when they pay out.
4-5 means for every £5 you bet, they'd give you £4 if you win (plus you keep your stake, obviously). Means they reckon it'll happen.
