Wireless gubbins

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Wireless gubbins

Post by Pissin' Poonani » Thu Feb 16, 2006 1:46 pm

Good heevening.

My dad and step-mum have just got themselves a lap top and broadband connection, and they'd like to connect wirelelessly to the ninnernets and their printer.

So, the question that you probably saw coming a mile off: can anybody reccomend a good/easy wireless thingymajig that will do all of the above, and also, are these things reliably secure?

Thanks very mucho. :)

well i got a freebie Actiontec wireless router with my broadband, and that does me perfectly well! Not really up to speed on that kind of hardware tho i'm afraid, so i can't really recommend anything.

as for security, make sure you go for one that has firewall built into it and that it's capable of securing the connection (WEP or WPA) - i should imagine most are, but as i say, not really my field of expertise.

NetGear seems to be the reccommended one for people working from home where I work, although I haven't had any problems with my Belkin.

Just remember to get the right one for your system: ADSL connection needs an ADSL router (which replaces the modem), while a cable connection just needs a standard Ethernet router (which goes between modem and devices).

Also, although wireless is good, you'll still need to use an Ethernet link to configure the router (especially when applying WEP/WPA).

To get back on track.

Ensure both router and modem are off.
1: Connect your modem to your router.
2: Connect your router to laptop via ethernet wire.
3: Turn the modem on, wait 30 sec.
4: Turn on router, wait 30 sec.
5: Turn on laptop.
6: Ensure laptop recognizes router.
7: Use the destruction manual to set router accordingly.

Now... to make it wireless.
1: Turn laptop off.
2: Disconnect ethernet wire
3: Turn on laptop
4: If laptop has built in wireless, use the wireless program that came with it.... otherwise use Microsoft Wireless setup program.
(you will find your wireless icon on lower right hand corner of the screen next to clock)
