Star Wars:ROTS not nominated for special effects? WTF?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Star Wars:ROTS not nominated for special effects? WTF?

Post by Yaya » Tue Jan 31, 2006 6:09 pm

What a rip!

King Kong, War of the Worlds, and Chronicles of freakin Narnia were nominated for best special effects, but not Revenge of the Sith. That's ludicrous. I mean, Hollywood must be taking Lucus ILM work for granted. Don't they realize that over half the **** in that movie wasn't even there?

I'm not saying the ROTS had the greatest effects of all time, but to not receive a freakin nomination, that's amazing.

as much as i think ROTS is dog turd - i agree, the effects themselves are bom diggy.

WOTW doesn't strike me as partularly amazing of the fx front.

What about Sin City? That movie was a visual masterpiece.

Id like to think I know a bit about FX - and dear god how can WOTW, which techically uses 'special effects (or spot effects) be nominated over Sith which is just one big special effect!

Is the award "best special effects" or "best use of special effects"?
Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:Sith which is just one big special effect!
That may well be the problem.

As far as that film went, none of the special effects were actually special - they were standard.

You take away the sfx in Episode III and you're left with... well, you're left with Hayden Christiansen and his expression that might be mischief, it might be glee, it might be angst or he might have sat on something sharp, I'm not really sure.

Is it really an "effect" if it constitutes the vast bulk of the movie? After a while, surely it's just scenery...
Grrr. Argh.

Isn't the idea of special effects that they blend in as seamlessly as possible?

I understand that Sith might over do it, but thats not dismiss the technical achivement.

The FX in sith is just as good and better in places then WOTW and theres more of it. I know Hayden and the plot is crap in Sith but thats not whats at question here, its how good the FX is, and Sith really does have some amazing moments.

the fight at the end for example is amazing considering the entire thing is on green screen.

Personally, I think the Matrix 2&3 should have got the FX award over LoTR last time round because they used far more techniques then LOTR did.

i mean there is nothing about it the effects or design that makes it stand out from other movies.

i don't think 'more of it' counts as a criteria though - otherwise Pixar would win it every year.

The effects in WOTW are stunning. Spielberg is a master and knows when to use them to their greatest advantage. Lucas will use 'em for the sake of it. So I'd lean towards WOTW there.

However, Sith should definitely be nominated. Much better than Narnia's (from what I've seen).

Yes sorry your right, what I should have said was i belive there were more different kinds of effects all done to the same equally high standard as WOTR.

Out of all of last years films I really do think without a shadow of a doubt, unless I have gone mad, it has the best special effects overall.

i found the whole film quite pedestrian and somewhat insipid so ill respectfully disagree.

Anyway - Serenity should get everything. obviously.

You're trying to tell me that Chronicles of Freakin Narnia was worthy of a nomination?

I mean, take out the special effects of ROTS, and you have bad actors running around on a stage. To go from that to intergalactic space spanning drama is quite a feat, no matter how often its been done in the past.

Granted, King Kong was unbelievable and War of the Worlds had some bits and pieces of special effects with mostly Tom Cruise's dumbass facial expressions.

All I ask is for a nomination, not even the win.

Err, must have missed the drama. I mean, there sure was a lot of space and stuff, but it was essentially a really dull cartoon with a few live actors (not bad per se, but all delivering bad performances) running around.

Ok, technical achievement, fair enough. But it probably would have more place in that new CG cartoon movie award thingy they invented for shrek or whatever, can't be bothered looking the details up.

Personally I thought the effects in Narnia were pretty good, at least, they didn't detract from the film at any point I can remember, which is more than I can say for that silly obi-wan/anakin duel at the end of ROTS.

I found it bloody boring, and full of obvious cg construct. Which to me is the exact opposite of a good special effect. Good special effects should help you think "wow, what a good scene" rather than, "wow, what an impressive bit of cg".

That said, to make sure my memory's got it spot on I'd have to watch it again, and that's really not going to happen.

Why Sin City isn't in there is a mystery. And plus Narnia can't win, they said they used the same software as LOTR, so technically, should it really be there?? I think not

I use the same software as LoTR tho? and im not there, they are just tools, they would have used photoshop aswell. like the rest of the world.

The fight scene doesnt have any obvious moments init, must be watching two different films its bloody clever, it uses just about every modern technique. actually SW uses so many techniques it makes WoTW looks like childsplay.

Best effect in WoTW is when a human gets zapped, that requires single frame masking.

Either way, its not about if u liked the film or not, its about how good are the special effects and SW has some amazing effects. at least enough for nomination.

King Kong has the Oscar wrapped up, so the other nominations are really just there for the sake of tradition.

I went to King Kong thinking to myself, "Peter Jacksons made 10 hours of brilliant movie for 200 million. What can he do with 3 hours and more than 200 million?"

About 2 hours into the movie my thought was, "Oh. Well, that, apparently."

No movie's ever looked better.

I could accept this because that's the first time that a CGI actually didn't look CGI, regardless of the surroundings, whether it was the jungle or city.
Either way, its not about if u liked the film or not, its about how good are the special effects and SW has some amazing effects. at least enough for nomination.
That's my point too. I mean, it doesn't matter that Natalie Portman and Christian Haddensen did one of the worst ham jobs ever.
which is more than I can say for that silly obi-wan/anakin duel at the end of ROTS.
You do realize that the entire world of Mustaffar where they fought, the lava, etc. was not there. ? I mean, it was all CGI except for Obiwan and Anakin. Even their weapons are not there.

Story and acting aside, those are some kickass special effects.

I would probably give the Oscar to King Kong, but Sith would definitely be second.

No, really? None of it? Damn, I thought it was all real....

Oh no wait, I thought it was pretty damn obvious there was no substance there, that's right. And one bit that sticks in mind as especially poor is the melting pillar bit, where they climb up it and still try to fight. Instead of being a seamless integration, the actors seemed out of place, which, granted, is a turnaround from the effects looking out of place, but all the same, not good effects in a film so much as good graphical achievement.

First of all, I hate it when someone replies to my sarcastic comments with an even more sarcastic response.

I thought the Mustaffar layout was very well done, considering we all knew it was coming.

the mustfarr fight scene is amazing - anyone can sit down with me and try and show mea bit where it doesnt look right.

I mean what happened, did the best CGI experets in the world ever forget how to use thier software that day? no.

they didnt get nominated because SW never does.
