If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Don't read if you don't want to know what happens

...

So the pieces of the puzzle are starting to fall into place now, we know about the hatch, we've seen the Others and the smoke/monster thing and now it looks like there's going to be the mother of all conflicts on the island, but there's still loads of stuff left unanswered. I'm now fairly sure that the Others' leader (the old guy with the beard) is Prof. DeGroot from the training film, but why he's now leading a rag-tag bunch of ferals who steal people in the night is open to speculation.

Anyone else watching, or have theories?

SPOILERS

Why did Jack ask Ana-Lucia about the army stuff when friggin Sayid "Hello, I like to torture people and I know hell a lot about guns" is there?

Anyways, I think there's to many unanswered questions.
Where's Desmond?
What's the countdown really for?
Who are "the others"?
Where's the big ass "monster" that likes to eat people?
Why can Locke walk?
What about the black rock (the old ship)?
How did Adebisi/Mr. Eko end up on the island? He was in Nigeria, dressed as a priest.. then what?
Where the hell are the polar bears?
I understand that it's a mystery show, but I think they are dragging a bit to long at times.

I have no theories what so ever though, but a lot of people seem to think that Libby is "another"

The Hobbit and Kate are dating (in real life) :o
Can't believe I'm still here.

Sayid's probably still a bit shaky after Shannon, plus I think they're trying to play up the whole "love quadrilateral" angle, so it would make sense for Jack to go to AL straight after walking away from Kate...
Obfleur wrote:I have no theories what so ever though, but a lot of people seem to think that Libby is "another"
I've seen this theory but teasers for next week seem to imply that Hurley and Libby recognise each other from before the crash - she's a psychologist and he was in a psych ward, so it's probably not that far a stretch. Actually she could still be an "other" - she could be there to keep an eye on the "subjects".

Mr. Eko's episode was just pure genius. I love that guy. I'm pretty sure he was on flight 817, though how he got to Sydney from Nigeria is beyond me.

I've heard him refered to as 'Ekobisi', after his Oz character. No little hat though. :)

Y'never know though-all this could get wrapped up fairly soon and prove to be just the tip of a very big iceberg. It seems that all bets are off as far as this show is concerned.

I think that they are waiting for the ratings to drop - then they'll release a couple of bombs and the audience will return and get hooked again.

Ive heard the same thing. They kind of make it up as they go along. Brilliant show. What did you all think of season 2 ep 12? They're all pretty easily available online for anyone who missed it. I was a little dissapointed in the lack of answers, but overall it was entertaining.

Just done eps 11 and 12 of s2. Me liking.

As for the whole "no answers" thing? I've been given lots of answers. Or at least indications that are enough to satisfy me whilst still leaving room for expansion.

Like the Others' bloke's speech about going in your host's fridge. :)
Obfleur wrote:Why did Jack ask Ana-Lucia about the army stuff when friggin Sayid "Hello, I like to torture people and I know hell a lot about guns" is there?
Because Sayid's essentially a pacifist. He wouldn't approve of the idea of mass conflict - it's not in his character. Psycho Cop girl, on the other hand, is... well... psycho.
Where's Desmond?
I keep wondering that. I reckon he'll turn up again before too long. Or at least I hope he will. He's probably shacked up with the crazy French lady.
What's the countdown really for?
Resets the electromagnetic system that failed? Something like that. Or, as it's clearly linked to where Walt is, maybe it lets the Others know that the station is still being manned? If the countdown gets reset, they know somebody's there. I'd suspect there to be an answer on that whole thing as the season 2/3 bridging point.
Who are "the others"?
I'd guess at the old Dharma staff, or their relief party. Maybe natives of the island. It's their house, and their fridge, though. Maybe they're the crew of The Black Rock. Or survivors of a previous plane crash.
Where's the big ass "monster" that likes to eat people?
There isn't one. It's the smokey defense mechanism suck-people-into-the-ground thinger and makes a clanky noise. :)
Why can Locke walk?
The question I want answering is "why couldn't he walk before?" I figure that once we know how he ended up in the wheelchair, we'll be able to take a better crack at working out why he can walk now. Maybe it's a byproduct of the electromagnetic thinger - he lost the ability to walk in s1, but got it back again after Desmond turned the lights on in the hatch.
How did Adebisi/Mr. Eko end up on the island? He was in Nigeria, dressed as a priest.. then what?
He was in the tail section. We'll probably get to why he was on that flight towards the end of s2. The last ep of s1 let us know why all that season's regulars were on the flight (to some degree at least).
Where the hell are the polar bears?
It's a big island. They're probably off with Desmond. If there are any left... did they kill the last one we saw? I can't remember. The one that tried to eat Walt...
but a lot of people seem to think that Libby is "another"
I need to rewatch the last eps of season 1 on that score... she told Hurley in ep12 that he stood on her foot whilst he was rushing onto the plane because he was last on (which he was, iirc).

I was beginning to think that everything was making perfect sense and grounded in logic at last... then that bloody horse turned up in episode 9. Gah!
Grrr. Argh.

I think that it's all a big experiment, everything was staged or isn't real to begin with because:

1. Jack knows Desmond, but Desmond leaves before he can say anything, isn't this a bit too convenient?

2. The man who Desmond met at the hatch supposedly knew that he was at the beach, but Desmond didn't seem to have any means of seeing what was going on outside the hatch.

3. The plane Eko's (sp?) brother was on couldn't have flown all the way from Nigeria. I think that it's not realisticly possible for the plane to be there. Maybe it's only there because Eko is on the island (hence the "it isn't real").

4. Kate's Horse, why is it there? She also saw it on the mainland, but why is it there right now?

5. Hurley and the numbers, maybe there's just more to it than just bad luck or something.

6. The crazy French chick is possibly a survivor from a earlier experiment.

7. Jack saw his father in the early episodes, could this have been some kind of mental experiment?

8. The others seem to know everybody's names, also, the Dharma recording stated that they were researching remote observation techniques.

9. And About the Dharma recording, don't you think that it's pretty convenient that the missing piece of recording was in the hatch of the other survivors?

10. Typing a sequense of numbers every couple of minutes is plain stupid, such a thing could have easily been automated with programming techniques available in the mid 60's.

And here's some question I have myself:

1. Sayid found a electrical cable coming from the sea in one of the earlier episodes, where does it lead to?

2. What is the monster?

3. How can Locke walk again? Or is this just a illusion?

4. Why doesn't Hurley lose any weight?

5. Why did the shark have a Dharma Logo on it?

Stormwolf wrote:1. Jack knows Desmond, but Desmond leaves before he can say anything, isn't this a bit too convenient?
Before who can say anything to who?

They met once, in passing. It's no more strange than Jack letting Shannon's dad die so he could save that woman he married. Or Sawyer being bundled through the police station that Boone was in, or Sawyer meeting Jack's dad. All the characters seem to have ties to each other in some way or another... I don't think there's anything about Desmond's presence that's particularly noteworthy over any of the other characters.
7. Jack saw his father in the early episodes, could this have been some kind of mental experiment?
I think this is the same thing that's causing people to see Walt. Or was causing Shannon to see Walt at any rate. Guilt, etc. The whole thing with Jack's dad is the only thing really winding me up - it's not even been touched on since we found the coffin was empty.
9. And About the Dharma recording, don't you think that it's pretty convenient that the missing piece of recording was in the hatch of the other survivors?
Not really. Two shelters, one on each side of the island. One bit of film in each. One set of survivors finds each shelter, ergo finds each bit of film. Convenience is the mother of plot revelation. ;)
10. Typing a sequense of numbers every couple of minutes is plain stupid, such a thing could have easily been automated with programming techniques available in the mid 60's.
Maybe the automated thinger broke.
1. Sayid found a electrical cable coming from the sea in one of the earlier episodes, where does it lead to?
Was it definitely an electrical cable? Maybe it's connected to the remote monitoring system you alluded to.
4. Why doesn't Hurley lose any weight?
He said he was. It takes a while to shift it all when you're that big. And when you starve yourself your metabolism slows down to compensate, meaning he burns off less energy, retaining fat. Eating less doesn't always directly result in weight loss. [/basic dietary advice]
5. Why did the shark have a Dharma Logo on it?
Shark's in the salsa. Our shark.
Grrr. Argh.

seems to me like she was sent to clean up a mess left by other experiments. This would explain the amount and type of guns for a group of "scientists".
10. Typing a sequense of numbers every couple of minutes is plain stupid, such a thing could have easily been automated with programming techniques available in the mid 60's.
agreed, must be part of some kidn of experiment or maybe a means of communicatoin

2. What is the monster?
my guess is some kind of mechanical security system. what its guarding? i dont know
4. Why doesn't Hurley lose any weight?
dont know. i think because its a tv show. You would expect everyone to lost weight in those conditions. Especially someone like eko. a man that big with that many muscles would need to consume a ton of food.
5. Why did the shark have a Dharma Logo on it?
apparently according to other boards this was a mistake. could have something to do with the reason why there are polar bears on the island. Some kind of ecosystem/genetics experiment.

There are a lot of things still unanswered. The only explanation for some of them so far seems ot be some sort of mind control. i would preffer a more scientific explanation though.

Have you guys ever watched "Survivor"?

In the last (swedish) season, there was a well trained dude and he got really skinny. Lost a lot of weight and muscles.

There was also a somewhat fatty dude. He didn't lose as much weight as the well trained dude.

Also; not only the fattys lose weight - everyone does.

exactly... i was actually in a similar situation. We had nothing to eat but dried rice, flour and noodles for 2 months. Since there was no protein all the guys lost massive amounts of weight. The girls all put on weight. Personally I went down to 120lbs from about 150 lbs. it happened within the first month of being there too. Like I said before, a guy of Eko's build would have skin hanging off of him at this point.
