Just went to my bike shed....

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Damn, that's terrible. It's too bad you're not in my area, I usually give out free bikes to people who enjoy cycling. Though, on the upside, you don't have to live in the US, so at least there's that.

What type of bike got pinched?

that sucks. :(

Do you have insurance or something?

Bike-stealing happens all the time around here. It's the national sport.

That's why my bike has tape all over and is badly spray-painted in a weird colour. That helps keeping it, I have it for about 11 years now.

Are you planning on getting a new one?

Ouch. Sorry to hear that, BF, it's a bugger when something thieves something off you. Feels horrid.

My missus (who works for the cops) says that when you report it do as full a description as poss, any exta bolt-ons, mods, anything unusual likes if it's been repainted, anything that helps identify it. There might be a thiever in the area, and she knows of cases where the cops have found bikes in gardens that have been nicked just due to a visual they were looking for.

Any used cycle shops or anything in your area?

Sorry to hear about it, Paul. I had a bike stolen from me once, and another one just vanished when my landlord cleaned the place. It's not fun.

If Mormon missionaries knock on your door anytime, (the guys in ties and nametags) ask if one is going home and if he wants to sell his bike. You could probably get one that has been, if not well-maintained, at least kept in shape, for forty or fifty quid. I'm serious. We never wanted to bother with the hassle of mailing the things home. Long shot, but if it comes up...

The postcode thing really does work - two friends of mine from uni had their bikes returned because of it, but I doubt you want to hear that.

Instead, compare my situation. I know who stole my bike and where it is. My Grandad half-inched it while I was down in London and took it to Spain :(

If it makes you feel any better someone cut the tires on my bike just recently. Think it was one of those frat-bastards.
