Reading the English version of the Koran has been on my to-do list for a while now and tonight I was passed a very good translation by a friend who offered to have a question and answer study with me when I was finished reading. I've not read it before, but if it does somehow convert me into becoming a Muslim, I'd like to be more like Sayeed from off of Lost, rather than the Tube-blowing-up kind, so you can rest easy on that score.
So, has anyone else read the Koran? Thoughts please, but no spoilers, as I'm just starting. Perhaps a separate thread?

I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Could you ask him/her if there's a good online version? Gutenberg have one, but I've no idea of the quality... and judging by a conversation I had with a British convert a couple of years back there's clearly as much difference in translations as the difference between the KJ and the wacky NIV version...
I tried when I was in High School, but didn't have the self-discipline to get more than about a dozen pages into it. So I just carried it around for a bit in case the knowledge leached into my brain or something.
I did a little on Islam at school and at Uni and found it to be reasonably interesting.
Although all I can remember from the, uh, 'mythology' concerns Muhammed's early life, his meeting with the...transcendant, and then a little bit of what comes after. Wouldn't mind a refresher, actually.
Let us know how you get on?

Apparently its full of nonsense like the Bible (no surprise) and the saner lot tend to gloss over certain bits.
My Mum's side of the family are muslim. They also eat pork and don't blow things up.
Sayeed rocks.

I've read chunks and attended the Friday prayers, meself. The best part, by far, is when the dude sings the call to prayer. It's like being transported into some ancient city under the sands, where women move silently and gracefully behind their veils, and beckon you with dark eyes. It seriously is magical.
I've got some Mus friends I could ask to recommend a translation, if you want.

So it's kinda like the Director's Cut of the Bible, as opposed to the Theatrical Edition?Jetfire wrote:It's much like the Bible really. Different ending.
The main guy at the end sacks a city, avoids getting killed and sets a less liberal bunch of rules, but thats about it. Some of the chapters are in a different order too.
Is Charlton Heston still in it?
