Any tips for writting maths equations in owrd. for example if i want to write the 'squared' symbol next to somthing whats the best way of doing this?
Not too difficult, mate.
Highlight desired text (i.e. the 2), then click on Format -> Font, select Superscript.
Same for subscript, except select Subscript, obviously.

Alternatively, if you want to include more than just indices, you might want to try the Microsoft Equation thing by clicking Insert -> Object, Create New tab, Object Type to Microsoft Equation (you might need to install the editor for this), OK. Enter equation using the toolbar.
