Tim Bisley: 007

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

I'd thought the new 007 had been announced for a minute there. Apparently its due to be announced any day now.

If there's any justice, that'll be Simon Pegg, too.

Or Nathan Fillion.

Cool. It'd be ace to have a pint with him.

Bit of wtf? casting, tho, to be honest. And now it means I'll probably want to see the film, just for him in it. Bah.

edit: blimey, he's in a film with Paltrow and Martin Freeman as well.

Fresh start?

'sides some people know him. Everything I've seen him in I've thought he was tops. Still fondly remember Our Friends in the North.
Last big thing was Layer Cake, I think. Currently making tabloid waves as having been having an affair with Sienna Miller.
And loads of folk will go to see the new Bond anyway.

It still not been announced officially.

Personally I'd prefer if Brosnan did one more.

Owen and Craig are both ******* excellent but probably aren't quite pretty enough for the masses.

Besides in the new film (prequel) he's meant to be 28-30. I'm thinking Ioan Grufford would be good.

Just make sure whoever it is has charisma.

Craig reminds me of Connery in a few ways. I'll probably be labelled insane for that, but I'm used to it.

Layer Cake was the ******* bomb.

No I agree. He has that physical presence, rough diamond appeal, lots of charisma and is a top actor. He's also been brill in everything I've seen him in.

I think they should just kill Bond in the next movie.

Ob, you think Arnie is cool, thus you cant have an opinion when it comes to Bond.

Layer cake was cool except for the Carlitos Way ending - rip-off

Bond can lick Arnies balls.

Meh, it's just to much Bond.
Evil dude threatens the world -> Somebody calls Bond -> Bond saves the day and gets to shag some skank -> Repeat in every movie.
It's the same with that series called 24. Jack Bauer stays up for 24 hours -> Saves the day.

And yes, Arnie does the same thing over and over in his movies (kick ass) - but at least his characters change.
Can't believe I'm still here.

His character changes

hmm thats suggesting arnie has a character at all in any movie! - big man, grunts a bit.

Bond changes with the times, Bond films have plots, Bond requires a half decent actor and apart from Terminator, are better films.

They could makea million bond movies aslong as they are good it doesnt matter.

And with that sentence I really don't care about the next Bond movie any more.

Batman Begins was bad enough. They don't need to re-introduce these characters to us. If there's a single person on this entire planet who doesn't know who Batman or James Bond are then they're not going to see the movie anyway. Even someone who's never seen a Bond film will know who James Bond is. Sorry, but it just seems pointless to start from the beginning again. And for all its merits, even Batman Begins bored the pants off me plot-wise.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

I don't like the idea of a Bond Begins either. Sure, make a gritty movie, but going back to the start... it just doesn't excite me.

Plus, well, shouldn't that mean it should be set in the 40s, 50s? Tho thats a can of worms...

I just feel that you could take any random Bond-movie and change the name to "Random Action-flick and the Hero is named Dennis".
There's nothing special about him, IMO.

surely anything that attempts to overwrite Shumeachers travesty from point dot is a worthy endevour.

Plus BB was the everloving glove.

Plus knwing who someone is in no way equates to knowing much about them, unless you wanted a Batman movie based on most people's point of reference, the original TV show? (another one that is) No ta.

Bond Begins seems pointless though - what is there to retcon or re-establish?

Bond would **** Arnie up by the way.

Hes britsh secret service guy who doesnt rely on special powers, he uses a few gadgets (now every action man has gadgets, bond invented it and does it better) is highly intelegent (unlike arnie, other action heros have only just grasped this) can kick ass (not because hes built like arnie but is just good at martial arts and usesing his brain - yes other movies have just worked this out too)

he does it all, Bond way.

It was okay. Here's hoping for better and third installments now he's actually Batman and doing Batstuff, though if they're taking on Burton they'd better get a good Joker.

Burton's relatively self indulgent take on the caped crusader (how did he get that title to himself?) has already been given the smack down as far as i am concerned.

Has Bond ever showed any human feelings?
If I remember correctly his wife got killed in one movie? Did he cry? Did he mourn? Anything?

And beside the wife-killing part - has there been any other human emotions?
Has Bond ever said "Man, I miss my family... sometimes I just want to quit this secret service-thingy and just go work at a gas station"
Has he ever been dumped by girl? "Oh noes, the girl didnt want me.. WHY? WHY?"
Has he ever told a girl (before he ****s her) "I'm sorry.. we cant do this. I love you and all, but my work is more important".
Has he ever told someone "I've missed you..." and really ment it?
Etc.

I havent seen all BOnd-movies so I'm curious.
Can't believe I'm still here.

Yes he has - many times, he hasnt cried like a bay and said "why - why" but he has got revenge. Bond wouldnt act like a sissy tho would he because hes a hardened 00 agent who has his emotions in the best check he can.

Bond is style, Bond is cool, Bond is a mans man. Bond is the Glove.
and last but not least.

Bond is British, hes the Union Jack, hes the stiff upper lip and bowls on the sunday green, hes the suave style most Yanks wish they had, the coolness the ausi man craves, and hes the character the germens lack, he has the humor the french dont understand and the women the Italian man cannot catch. he has the toys Bill Gates wants to play with and words that shakesphere wish he wrote, he looks better then brad pitt and stephen hawkins wants him over to pick his mind on science, whilst Gucci calls him for style tips... he is all these things and many more, he is Bond, James Bond.

And that is why hes cool.
Nuff said.

Yep.
Obfleur wrote: If I remember correctly his wife got killed in one movie? Did he cry? Did he mourn? Anything?
Yep. On Her Majesty's Secret Service. He cradles her body in complete shock - only time we've seen him like that really. Then he starts to break just as the film ends.

Then at the beginning of the next film (Diamonds Are Forever) he kicks the **** out of everyone in his way to get his revenge on Blofeld (this includes strangling a girl with her own bikini top - class.

Also re: mourning, he noticably grimaces/flinches when the subject of his wife is mentioned in Spy Who Loved Me, Licence to Kill, World Is Not Enough.

He also puts flowers on her tombstone in For Your Eyes Only.
Obfleur wrote: And beside the wife-killing part - has there been any other human emotions? Has Bond ever said "Man, I miss my family... sometimes I just want to quit this secret service-thingy and just go work at a gas station"
Yep. He quits in License to Kill, and again in Die Another Day.
He has no family - his parents were killed in a climbing accident when he was young.
He leaves one girlfriend (in Tommorow Never Dies played by Teri Hatcher) because they "got too close."

The films haven't ignored the way he deals with relationships. Check Goldeneye:

"I might as well ask if all those vodka martinis silence the screams of all the men you've killed... or if you've found forgiveness in the arms of all those willing women for the dead ones you failed to protect?"

and

"How can you be so cold?"
"It's what keeps me alive."
"No. It's what keeps you alone."

Obfleur wrote: Has he ever been dumped by girl? "Oh noes, the girl didnt want me.. WHY? WHY?"
Well its not exactly soap opera, but theres an example of him falling for a lover who then goes on to betray him (Sophie Marceau in World Is Not Enough) and choose someone else.

Theres 20 Bond films (varying in both style and admittedly quality) and they're not so easily generalised.

Personally I'd strongly reccomend something like From Russia With Love (1964). Brilliant acting and intrigue, a tight cold war thriller. The fight on the train is probably the best action scene ever filmed.

I stand by it! As far as 1 on 1 screen fights go. :)

In fact the fight in Kill Bill 1 (in the living room/kitchen) reminded me of it, the confined space and all.

Those early fights are so influential - the really quick editing which has been taken to extremes now.
