I know what you're thinking. No way. This headline is misleading and it'll be that the school expelled her for something similar to having gay parents. They expelled her for "corrupting youth" or something similar, right? Nope. The school actually gave "her parents are gay" as the reason for kicking her out of school. The article follows:
School Expels Girl for Having Gay Parents
Sep 23 7:05 AM US/Eastern
ONTARIO, Calif.
A 14-year-old student was expelled from a Christian school because her parents are lesbians, the school's superintendent said in a letter.
Shay Clark was expelled from Ontario Christian School on Thursday.
"Your family does not meet the policies of admission," Superintendent Leonard Stob wrote to Tina Clark, the girl's biological mother.
Stob wrote that school policy requires that at least one parent may not engage in practices "immoral or inconsistent with a positive Christian life style, such as cohabitating without marriage or in a homosexual relationship," The Los Angeles Times reported in Friday's edition.
Stob could not be reached for comment by the newspaper. Shay and her parents said they won't fight the ruling.
School administrators learned of the parents' relationship this week after Shay was reprimanded for talking to the crowd during a football game, Tina Clark said.
Clark and her partner have been together 22 years and have two other daughters, ages 9 and 19.
Now, maybe it's just me, but if you want to talk about practices that are "immoral or inconsistent with a positive Christian life style," you might want to look at kicking someone out of school because of something LEGAL that her parents do. Honestly, I do not understand how religious organizations get away with blatant discrimination like this.
Church: No gays allowed!
Civilization: Uh, isn't that discrimination?
Church: NO! Our GOD says this so we have to do it! It's our belief! YOU'RE discriminating against US if you don't let us practice our beliefs!

Can I open a restaurant and not allow gays, blacks, or people over 6'4 into the store? What about people whos parents are shorter than 4'9? How about if I forbid women from working there? Probably not. Why are religious organizations able to do it?

yep. such a load of cock. it really angers me.Metal Vendetta wrote:...and also making sure that religious organisations are exempt from discrimination laws, of course. After all, what's a good religion without discrimination, eh?
equating a set of ideas to characteristics such as race is utter bollocks.
oh! What other irrational ideas can we give prefferential status to?
utter utter nonsense.

If you'd care to question the guy who expelled the girl, his office phone number is: Leonard Stob (561) 586-8216

Depends. Under UK law you can discriminate on grounds of preserving authenticity (for example if you are opening an Italian Restaurant, you are entitled to only employ Italians) and AFAIK there is no law about not employing people on the grounds of their height.Professor Smooth wrote:Can I open a restaurant and not allow gays, blacks, or people over 6'4 into the store? I have absolutely no idea how it works for Christian Schools as I don't even know if they qualify as businesses and are therefore subject to even laws about sexual/racial discrimination.

I came out of the closet to the pastor of a church that I've been attending on and off for the past five years. I sent him an e-mail telling him about all the stuff that's been going on in my head and between Jesus and me about the fact that I want to be a woman. He wrote back telling me that transition was a very 'self-destructive' path, and told me that God created me a man for a reason. I asked him why I would feel this way so strongly, and asked him why God created us all so differently if he wanted us all to be the same.
He hasn't wrote back since.
This may seem kind of off-topic, but it really isn't in my eyes. I still love Jesus, but I'm going to stand with all of you and say "F*ck the church, because they ruin people's lives."

They don't pay taxes and are private organizations. Restaurants, although owned privately, serve the public through their business and pay taxes.Professor Smooth wrote: Why are religious organizations able to do it?
In addition, the government wants to stay away from religion. Regulating religion is only a few steps away from undue intrusion of govt into religion. (Seperation of Church/State)

Oh. From the standpoint of an atheist, that's completely insane.Computron wrote:They don't pay taxes and are private organizations. Restaurants, although owned privately, serve the public through their business and pay taxes.Professor Smooth wrote: Why are religious organizations able to do it?

Of course it doesn't. What it does mean though is that a private religious organization can do what they want so long as they do not break the law. If this was a public setting, she would have a clear equal protection under the law case.Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:so that makes being a racist bigoted communit ok then?Computron wrote:They don't pay taxes and are private organizations. In fact I'm pretty sure that in the contract the school signed with the student as per enrollment, there is some clause in there that the school reserves the right to expel a student for most any reason it wants.

I'm glad the parents aren't fighting the ruling. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be in a place that would have kicked me out for something like that.
So Compy, does the protection extend to less-than-popular religions? Cults for example.

Only in America lads.. only in America.
{points finger at Compy and Smooth}
HAHA!
Seriously messed up tho. I do believe that Jesus hung around a lot with sinners and reformed sinners in his following, correct? Is it entirely impossible to believe that among the hookers and robbers and what-not that there could have been... ta tam ta dam.. a homosexual person?
I thinketh not.

I think in that case the FBI maufacture false claims about your actions, fire flame into your compound then kill you all, all the while continuing to make stuff up to justify their actions and non of it is really questioned by the media.Professor Smooth wrote:I'm glad the parents aren't fighting the ruling. I have no idea to be honest. I'm sure there is some minimum threshold to be classified as a religious organization and benefit from the priviliges mentioned earlier.Professor Smooth wrote:I'm glad the parents aren't fighting the ruling.
