Nintendo Rev Controller revealed

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

5 Points granted for uniqueness of design.

10 points deducted for taking a product that works best in one piece, and splitting it in half...

Just outsource the job to Apple and let em design the controller. They'll probably end up with a controller that is ergonomically perfect, light and can hold 4gigs of music.

What the [composite word including 'f*ck'] is that?

I am very disappointed.
Before I saw those pics I was all "I am gonna buy the Rev, before I buy the Ps3".
But now I am leaning more towards "[composite word including 'f*ck'] it. The rev can lick my balls".

I ******* hope you get the option of buying a real control.

"You'll be able to play SNES and N64 games on the Rev".
Where are the shoulder buttons?

Sorry for being so pissie.
Can't believe I'm still here.

Yes, it does look weird, but I don't think we should judge it untill we see how it is used in the games, no doubt it won't be too long before Shigeru Miyamoto stands on stage and shows us his new Mario game, then we'll see how the controller is applied. Personally, I'm excited about the possibilities, I find myself ignoring consoles altogether at the moment, the GBA gets all my attention. I think the games industry needs something new, not the same genres with better graphics. And no, I'm not a Nintendo Zealot.

That you'll need to download specific software to be able to use?

I like the thing. It's a neat idea. Not read through everything on it as I don't really care, but the notion of an IR controller for a console is just, well... blatantly obvious, really.
Grrr. Argh.

It's basically a 3D mouse then. nice. Might make the casual user almost forget they're playing the same plumber bouncing round moving blocks for the 37th time ;)

Shame it doesn't look slightly more ergonomic, I dread to think how much muscle ache that thing might cause if you played it solid for a couple of hours (im guessing gripping your TV control solid and jabbing buttons on it for 120 minutes would be a pretty good parallel).

3D mice are something I've always thought would be of best use on PC's, especially for design, but they've never really taken off outside of specialist system setups within corporations.

Supposedly you can still use Gamecube controllers. Though I've yet to see that backed up by anything.

What the..! :eek: How the..! {twists and turns little gadget}

Ok, anybody notice it seems to be built to use modules for new functions? Sorta like an evolution on the port that was on the N64 controller, where you added rumble, memory or other thingies.

Must read more now.

AND: IMMMMMMMMMMPYYYYYYYY!!!!!! You 50ft evil monstrousity!! You did it before me!! BEFORE ME! Agghh... how could I let this happen?!

posting from Gran Canaria here :D

I am both excited and confused. The possibilities with the tech are fantastic, I think it looks cute but I´m still confused as to how it works. the write up on IGN is really good.

Gamecube pads can actually plug into the side of the rev,but Nintendo have also revealed there will be a pad shell/cradle, which OI expect will be similar to the VMU and Dreamcast pad.

I think some really unique games can be made with this set up, and it will be awesome for FPS, the thought of Metroid is very exciting. Punch out using the pad to swing a punch, monkey ball using the tilt sensors, Pikmin with the mouse type set up....

Fair play to them for trying something different. It is quite clear how much they wish to distance themselves from Sony and Microsoft now. If they can continue to make great games and be profitable, then why not

There's some cool pictures in this Newsarama thread, showing mocked up possibilities for the controller.

http://newsarama.com/forums/showthread. ... adid=43547

I can't wait for this - the less I become interested in 'normal' videogames, the more Nintendo appeal to me.

Sweet. Must. Look. At. Video. Now. :D

Mind is racing with the feel of a 3D starcraft with this controller and 3d-glasses.

OH, and Shigeru Miyamoto and his dev-teams are GODS.

Its certainly different. I can see most third party developers only making use of the shell that changes the remote/wand into a more standard controller.
Nintendo will hopefully make a lot of games that support the actual purpose of the innovation, and lead the third parties into implementing it slowly.

over on the edge forum alot of talk has gone into how a FPS would work using the controller... no one can work it out.

Im happy, and excited, and at the same time i still see it as 'novel' - id like to see some games next.

Think of it like an eye toy....but with a controller with buttons to wiggle around instead of your hands.
