A little help with my computer please.

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

A little help with my computer please.

Post by adam.creighton » Thu Sep 15, 2005 12:55 pm

I've been trying to install some older games on my pc, such as Grim Fandango and Abe's exodus, but every time i click on install I get the message "C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications."
I have Windows XP. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not going to post the entire knowhow, but here's what you basicly could do:

- Make backups of all your important files (on a CD or DVD)
- Format your comp
- Create 2 new partitions (C should be FAT32 and D should be NTFS)*
- Instal Win98 to the FAT32 partition
- Instal WinXp to the NTFS partition.

*You should make the Fat32 partition atleast 10GB to 15GB in size, the rest would go into the NTFS partition.

I don't recommend removing XP in favour of 98 to run a couple of DOS programs unless those programs are vital to your using your computer effectively. XP has bugs but it has light years fewer than 98, you'd essentially be trading in a modern Ford for a 1980's Sierra because you want a tape player instead of a CD deck.

Furthermore you'd be setting yourself an uphill task in backing up and reinstalling your system and hunting down Windows 98 drivers for all of your components (which are likely to be relatively modern if you're using XP); unless you're familiar with how to do it I don't recommend wiping your system. It's a last resort.

Which version of XP are you running? It's a long shot (as I'd imagine you'd know about its compatibility issues if you had it) but if you are running Windows XP x64 Bit Edition, 16Bit MS-DOS programs don't work.

If you are adament that you want to run these programs try finding a DOS emulator such as this. Also ensure on the CD's for your video games that you are installing any additional programs which are recommended (they normally bundle them on the disk). If you're using pirate games, that might be 3/4 of your problem right there.

EDIT - glad you got it solved :)
