CV's..

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

CV's..

Post by Impactor returns 2.0 » Tue Aug 09, 2005 1:39 pm

I should no better having had to read hundreds in my own time, but I wanted to update my own CV recently, and its being a 'multi-media' CV, I was wondering if anyone had recently made one, and could give me some good tips.

Whats the standard layout?

Page 1.
Profile,
experience,
education?

Page 2.
Skills,
hobbies?

I say 2 pages as ive been told ppl dont like more. or I didnt...

Any ideas?

Ours are a bit different:

- personal details
- education and experience, you can choose which you do first
- skills
- hobbies

Without the profile. But I think you should keep the profile. And not more than 1-2 pages.

Try to make a non-boring one. Maybe you can add one of those CD/business cards with your portfolio on?

yes sorry, when i said profile i ment personal info/details.

I see ours are not much different.

on the CD front, my only issue was I used to bin them, i mean actually i used to read qualifications, skills, and ask for an interview. - perhaps i was just busy!

If multi-media it might be useful to have a website with a portfolio of relevant work...otherwise, yeah that seems fine.

...actually I totally left out hobbies. I thought it seemed wanky to put "was zombie in Shaun of the Dead", "opened V99 at Weston Park", "wears women's clothing" or "enjoys reading" when it's not relevant to anything to do with the job. If I built unix servers in my spare time, then yeah, I'd put that in, but no-one gives a **** about sports, reading, music or any of that crap in the real job market do they?

Actually I just asked a couple of the guys here and they recommended putting hobbies in - just so they have something non-work related to ask in the interview. Make sure it's not "I like reading, eating and breathing" tho'. Mention that you are a TF-comic designing genius.

I work for a graphic design studio, and I can tell you experience and portfolio are the only things we look at. and a warning that if you send out multimedia cds, I know of hardly any design studios with enough time on their hands to sit down and go through them. Website is the best way to go.

Oh good its not just me then, when i ran my design studio I never looked at cd's either.

I looked at what software they knew about and thier work. experience didnt bother me to much because if they can do the work, they can do it.

I wouldn't. If I got a CV with someone's face on it I'd disregard it. Unless they were a pretty girl, obviously. Then I'd keep it for *ahem* private use.
