Aliens

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Because people would rather imitate 'Aliens' than make up new stuff. And even then, they worry so much about $ that they only imitate the form and not the substance.

The only film in years that really stunned me with its originality and smurf-you-who-cares attitude is 'Sin City.' I now worship Rodriguez. It makes me so furious that no one else can put forth this amount of effort.

They're both cool, but Hudson gets a few more cracking lines...of course, we all know that Bishop is the coolest. He can do...the thing with the knife! ;)

If any Aliens fan doesn't have the Quadrilogy DVD set, you are totally missing out btw. It's awesome.

Alien and Aliens are great movies (and very different from one another).
And Ripley is one of very few 'strong female characters' that are actually cool, and not 'too much'.

I wish I could see Aliens at a theater/cinema :(

Be sure to watch the Aliens special edition, you can see all kinds of cool stuff:

- You can see Newt and her parents at the alien spaceship from Alien
- You can see the people at the colony before they all got facehugged
- The facility commander is played by the same guy who played the captain in Red Dwarf :D

I like the extra bits in the Aliens Sp.Ed. though not sure it makes it a better film.

I want to see the Director's Cut of the first film. I've seen the deleted scenes, not sure how they'd work in context.

I'd give the first film full marks, but no masterpiece should have to resort to a gratuitious arse shot at the end. The second film is better.

Repeated viewings have made my appreciation of the third film go up, and the fourth one go down. The Predator crossover was harmless fun.

I'd get the Quadrilogy but I've already own the first two films. Hmmm, maybe I'll check out Ebay.

My ratings:
Alien 9/10
Aliens 10/10
Alien 3 7/10
Alien Resurrection 6/10
Alien Vs Predator 6/10

Sigourney is easily my favourite actress.

IMO Alien and Aliens are pure greatness.
Alien 3 is a 7/10 - and it contains one of my favourite scenes ever. The birth of the alien / the burial of Newt and Hicks (or maybe the burning of N and H).
I think it's fantastic.

Alien Ressurection feels like a ordinary generic action movie - and the newborn looks like a big white turd  It's crappy.

Alien VS Predator is the worst though.
Before I saw the movie, I watched alot of features and stuff like that.
Paul WS Anderson actually got me believing that he was a fan of the Alien/Predator movies, and that he would treat them with respect.
Hah! :(
Can't believe I'm still here.

alien 4 is like the posiden adventure but with ALiens and retains no greatness of the first 2 what so ever.

its interesting to note the first 2 are great in the same way Terminator 1 and 2 are great in similar ways. no need to explain why im sure...

AvP is just kiddy poo.

Alien 4's problem was that for most of the film the aliens themselves just aren't about. I get the impression that most of the time they're just sitting playing cards off set, which tends to ruin my enjoyment of it :( And the newborn is just silly. AvP was, yeah, harmless but fun. I liked Resident Evil and had similar expectations from this, as both films are, essentially, Aliens anyway. Some of it was pure crap - the translation of the Egyptian Cambodian and Aztec hieroglyphs into "it changes configuration every 10 minutes" is bollocks. I did like the way everyone got killed though

Aliens is beyond compare, IMHO. I'd be hard pressed to think of a film that is better.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Aliens just rocks, I cant think of one bit I dont like in the whole film.

the guns, the sets, the Aliens, the actors, the script, the start, middle end, all of it. all brillant.

Now, this is crule, but last night for the first time I noticed that film could do with some cleaning, its a bit rough in places and looks like it came from the video age.

not the films fault, its just age.

Heh... I loved how the latino dude just layed eyes on something, and one second later he knew everything about it.
"Yes, this is a friggin alien pyramid, built by aliens I never knew existed - and the language is a mixture of three old human languages - but hell, that wont stop me, 'cause I have superintelligence, booya".

One thing that really annoys me about AVP is that the characters are all from different Ethnics (that the right word/expression?).
Anyways, what I mean is that we have one is russian, one is latino, one is black, one is a white nerd.
They dont seem like people to me. They're just stereotypes that I dont care for. Bleh.
Can't believe I'm still here.

See DS9 for how to handle ethnically diverse casting well.

Tho' Spud from Trainspotting was brilliant.

"They mostly come at night, mostly."

Extra marks for having a character called 'Spunkmeyer'.

Further marks for having an actor that went on to portray a prison rapist in Shawshank.

Even more marks for having Alien's squeal like Elephants when they get shot to bits.

Also love the lines:

Hudson: Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?
Vasquez: No, have you?

But out of all Hudson's lines, this has to be the best!

"Hudson: I'm ready, man, check it out. I am the ultimate badass! State of the badass art! You do NOT want to [composite word including 'f*ck'] with me. Check it out! Hey Ripley, don't worry. Me and my squad of ultimate badasses will protect you! Check it out! Independently targeting particle beam phalanx. Whoa! Fry half a city with this puppy. We got tactical smart missiles, phase-plasma pulse rifles, RPGs, we got sonic electronic ball breakers! We got nukes, we got knives, sharp sticks..."

I find the main problem isn't even the newborn, I've already seen it's a crap film up until then.
It's the complete lack of Tension throughout and the fact it developed "Teen horror syndrome" where you don't care for anybody who dies.
That's mostly because they don't have a real character and are not protrayed by serious actors or a quality director. The first two Alien's were directed by two of the best director's on top of their games.

Most of the time when Alien's turn up the deaths are almost comedic too.

Bah, the AVP movie should have been based on the AVP 2 videogame, that way we would have seen marines again.

Hell, the Marine campaign itself made some people almost crap themselves when that radar thing started showing multiple contacts from all around.

And then there's the screams in the dark...

AvP 2, the videogame, is by far the scariest ******* thing I have ever played (as a marine that is).
Sometimes I just froze when that sodding thing started bleeping.

I remember one time when the radar started bleeping, and there was two dots on the screen - I froze for a second before I started to investigate.
The first dot was some sort of gigantic hook, hanging from a crane, swinging around.
I immediately understood that the other dot had to be the same thing - but I was still crapping my pants, afraid that it could be an alien of some sort.
Fantastic game!

The current "special edition" releases of the individual films are supposedly the same releases that are included in the Quad set. You can pick them up for about a tenner in most high street shops (that's usually when you work the promo prices, though... BOGOF or whatever)

Quality comment on Alien Resurrection from the script writer:
I don’t remember writing, “A withered, granny-lookin’ Pumkinhead-kinda-thing makes out with Ripley.” Pretty sure that stage direction never existed in any of my drafts.
w00t. AR gets bonus points for featuring Warrick from CSI plus Hellboy.
