Come on England!!
seriously, Apart from having a huge sports center built in the middle of London, and hopefully the idea of keeping fit will rub off on our children, an Olympics in London would look amazing.
So many Landmarks, so much history with races based around it.
Could be amazing!

The UK is one of the richer countries in Europe. A heavy hitter in the EU. Of course you can afford it.
And why wouldn't you want it? Many much less finnancially blessed countries are trying to get it. It's good sports fun. I wonder wich super-famous athlete should light the flame tho? Ali was titanical when he did it, because he is Muhammed Ali.

I think as a nation we need to promote healthy living for a younger generations and via the olympics and wonderfull new sports erm 'town' it should all help.
plus it will look great here due to all the history we can pour into the events.
Money? sod that we got loads of money we waste on crap every year, money isnt an issue really.

Shouldn't our schools be doing that sportswise?Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:sending the right message to our kids etc... blah.
And I support the Paralympics - I used to help out at the wheelchair sports centre at Stoke Mandeville. I liked the wheelchair basketball.
Okay, our country probably CAN afford it - but wouldn't it be better to use that 'spare' cash for our underfunded schools and hospitals etc?

Though you could say the same about Paris, it would be pretty cool if the games were held there.

Great stuff.
Everyone in the office gathered round a little portable TV, i think we all thought it would go to Paris, so the spontaneous roar of joy when we got it was quite something.
As for how much it will cost we should make more back anyway. Plus if you want to start diverting funds to schools i suggest we do it from, hmm, invading countries or something rather than a world renowned event that has the potential to have a massive positive impact.

So I take it none of you were very pleased about Chirac's comments?
How IS the food over there, anyway?
Congrats on the Olympics, though. I'm glad it didn't go to New York. It's good to see America not get what it wants. Builds character.

I suppose, but we'll just look even more stupid as we don't win bugger-all while we're the hosts.Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:Yes, the money for schools dosnt change that much, but what we have now is a huge sports comlex in the city, somthing children can visit in saftey and really begin to learn for the future, the postive impact to our children will be massive.
Still, glad the French didn't get it. Although it does mean that they'll have to come here now.
We'd better put some plastic sheeting down...

we dont win bugger all as we dont put money into olympic trainning - hang on, we just won the chance to have the olympics, and we got 7 years to get our kids ready.
I think well have more gold medals then ever before, and if we can get our kids interested in keeping fit instead of eating maccy d's we might have a chance.
Also its nice to hear chidren saying already they want to be famous by winning gold medals, and not by saying, I just want to rich and famous for nothing... like all the other loser celebs our chav culture has created.

Congratulations to London on winning the bid. As someone in the New York area we here are all VERY HAPPY by this. No one in New York wanted it here except for the rich business men and politicians and I guess that just wasn't enough for the IOC to award it here.. to bad MWHAHAHA!
Im quite happy today as are all my fellow NYers. London truly deserved this over Paris and New York shoudln't have even been in the running, its very sad that we told them long ago when they first put this bid that we don't want it here, don't do it, it will never win, we won't support it. Well Lets just say that even the Olympic stadium that they tried to get built in New York City got voted down by the states goverment due to overwhelming protest of the whole idea of it. $30 million later, and a lot of time wasted and we are back to where we started. No Olympics in New York, no support for it, the rich mayor of New York City continues to look like an idiot as does the Govorner of New York State both of whom are Republicans are both of who are on their way out if the Democrats can get someone decent to run against each.
Thank you IOC. Thank you for not falling for the lies and tactics that the NY olympic planning comitte tried to pass over on you. Claiming that New Yorkers support it when only 35% of people in teh area supported it. Gee who would have thought, the IOC did their own studies and findings and uses a big factor on how big the support is for the host city. What a waste of time and money.
Congrats again London. You will do a great job with it and we here in New York couldn't be any happier. This was well deserved and the right decision. Now rich people who have enough money in this area won't make more money from this, they will just find other ways to get richer. At least it won't be through something that had no support here.
How about focusing your efforts and money on building a new Freedom Tower where the Twin Towers used to be.. oh wise and brilliient politicians in New York who thought this was a good idea for some strange reason, even thoguh it had little support. The same governor who says he won't allow any anti-Bush images or statements at the Freedom Tower, while we all wait for them to even start building. Hes focusing on that crap and the olympics when we just want a building there. BUILD IT and stop wasting our time and money on non sense like what images are allowed and how to get the olympics here. Both Pataki (govorner of NY) and Bloomburg (Mayor of New York City) got a huge reality check today. Both are up for election this year and I would be very worried if I were both of them now. Nothing but rich Republicans who have done nothing more then wasted time and money and energy and haven't at all seen who the people of the state are and how they feel on anything. If the last election for moron..er president wasn't a clue now maybe this is.
London good job!! IOC great job on your selection. Republicans of NY and rich business men of the great city I live in.. get lost.
Hopefully now that this is done with the Freedom Tower can be built so it will be up by the time the Olympics of 2012 even happen in London, highly doubtful with the present people we have running things.

As a Londoner, I was quite apathetic about the bid, and like everyone else, I really thought it would go to Paris. I'm quite ashamed to say that when we beat the French it felt ****ing brilliant. Some things just run deep, I guess. Take that, Chirac, etc.
There was a map of the site for the Games in tonight's Standard, it looks like Tracy Island or something. Can't wait. And thanks for the congrats PB, I hope they sort out Ground Zero soon.

I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

We beat the French, which was good for a laugh. Other than that, I couldn't give a monkeys. Watch how much your Council Tax rises over the next 7 years, Londoners, and then tell me it was all worth it.
Sheffield hosted the World Student games about 10 years ago. Built lots of superb facilities (which I've never used), and the city is still paying off the vast debts. Not on the same scale as the olympics, obviously, but you get my point.

Yeah, but the council tax payers who will fund all the building and upgrading of facilities are generally not the businesses that will benefit and profit from the tourists (lots of american-owned hotel chains will make a killin' - great).Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:considering its going to bring a huge ammount of tourism in and stuff its all been pre-calculated with some overheads. and money to be made back in the future.
I really dont think money is an issue - not to the the point you would notice.
