If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

This is a fun program to spend an hour on!

And downloading is free, I think
http://earth.google.com/
You can fly to different places and zoom in etc., quite fun! Though not everything in the world looks sharp, my house is just a big blur. But the cathedral in Rome is quite sharp for example.
Anyone else tried this yet? I heard that Microsoft was developing something like this as well, but can't find anything about it except for some news articles like

The web-based version is
http://maps.google.com/
Although, until recently, they only had USA, UK and no satellite images.

Oh my god.
If the zoom were just a little bit better I'd be able to see my parent's house. That's ******' creepy!
I see the dirt road just off the highway... the field surrounding our house... even the little bits of scrub bush around the area. I used to play in that scrub bush!
And woah dude, I can see my apartment building from here!

If anyone's still interested, I do have the installer file and can mail it.
It's about 10 MB.

thanks Eline, but they've re-enabled the download!
it's cooler than the online version as you can tilt your point of view and see 3d buildings (in some american cities anyway)...

Say, on that google satillite stuff. Is this something updated fairly often or just some database? I refreshed a couple of times to see if anyone was perhaps visiting my household, but noticed a couple of semi trucks still in the same spot on the freeway to the left of my house.
Muchas gracias to Mob for the Sig, proving why he's called 'King'.
The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.

um, it's not really updated, i can't find the FAQ that states how old the pictures are, but i think it's something that's been compiled over a long period of time. certainly, i don't think it's going to be able to be used to check up on visitors.

It is the year 2005... ...and Chuck still doesn't have the level of technology he feels he should have available at his fingertips.
Bummer.

The technology exists, just not available to general public!

I talked with the Google Earth guys, and they said that the data is 1-3 years old. It is continously updated, but since it takes a year for a satellite to fly around the world, it might take some time. They don't have satellites all over the world taking pictures all the time.
It also depends on the companies/municipalities/etc who actually buy the data. If no-one wants to buy for sharp photos in your general area, then you will remain blurry.
You can always get them to take the pics you want, if you pay.
