Well, saw it yesterday...
-I must say I have mixed feelings, but, THIS is what an alien invasion should be like, not like Independence day.(puttup!)
Spoilers AHEAD!!!
-So, the visuals are great. Destruction, mayhem, mayor carnage, just what you 'd expect. And also, we learn (duh) that people are stupid. Well american people, as we don't see any other countries ,although the invasion goes worldwide.
-The Tom-Cruise and his kids plot is, well, boring, but it has some high points. Still, even Spielberg wouldn't dare to brake the cliches and have the hero lose his family, although logic dictates he should have had...
-The thing Ilike best about thisfilm is, that it looks REAl... so real you can imagine this happen... While we laughed through Godzilla and I.D. (puttup!) this is a truly bleak, grim outlook we get here. Humanity doesn't stand a chance, and we don't win because we are better, more clever, or we have Will Smith (puttup!) fly a plane into the mothership... it's a friggin accident, a chance in a million... So I really came out of the theatre with this hopeless feeling. The movie is scary because it shows us that NOWHERE is safe... the aliens won't rest until they exterminate usand they are thoghrough
-A nice touch, the movie begins and ands with quotes from Wells original novel.
-About the aliens? Well, there are tripods, umm,and also, tripods. And did I mention tripods? This is not a problem, though. They are so detailed and realistic, plus there are nifty features on them (periscope-tentacles, human-blood-drainer, disintegrator beams (it really disintegrates!)) that you won't find them boring even at the end of the movie.
-The slugs looked abit different then I expected, the heads are the same but I didn't remeber those long legs. They are kinda cute, really, in that weird-slimy-alien sort of way.
-The biggest problem was the part in the bunker... It was too long, pretty boring (Iwished I had a remote) and the crazy vet, Istill think it was illogical and unnecessery to have Cruise have to kill him. He could have knocked himout and tied him up...
-The ending, well, if you know the original, you know that the slugs don't take influenza well...
All in all I rate it a 85°%,though I wouldn't watch itagain (not without a remote...)

I saw this today. I didn't really want to go, but my girlfriend really wanted to. So... I thought it was just kinda so-so, but something struck me about it. I'll bet that when the TF movie finally gets made, it'll be a lot like this. Sure, there'll be more characterization of the aliens, but for the most part, this is what I expect from the TF film.
As far as smoothness is concerned, I'd liken this film to a five year old mouseball.

I think I might be remembering something else.
And true enough Iexpect pictures likes this when Devastator wages through acity... well if he's in the movie.

The Day After Tomorrow is awful.Autobloke wrote:Some films - like 'The Day After Tomorrow' - do largescale destruction of cities very well. Perhaps there'll be a nice big city-crushing battle during the TF movie.
Cold chasing people down corridors?
Wolves?
Pah.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Ignore the rubbish character stuff and enjoy the buildings getting arsed-over by lots of water. And ID4 had some nice destruction I could live with in a TF movie.Metal Vendetta wrote:The Day After Tomorrow is awful.

And just to go back to what I mentioned earlier: the old War of the Worlds movie I was on about has just been released on DVD. Ah, cash-in...

SPOILERS
I really enjoyed this flick. It is, as has been said, what an alien invasion movie should look like. And I had minimal problems with it. One problem being that no matter where they go via wheeled vehicle, everything seems placed just right so that they may keep going. Nice clear paths everywhere. Yup, uh-huh. The other thing is, okay, so these aliens for some reason buried these tripods long before mankind came along and decide to strike now. A, why now? B, did our atmosphere not bug them back then or what?
Muchas gracias to Mob for the Sig, proving why he's called 'King'.
The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.

Re: SPOILERS
You'd have thought they'd have left some kind of mechanism to prevent a dominant species evolving. And wasn't it a human cold germ that killed them in the end?Señior's Covenant wrote:The other thing is, okay, so these aliens for some reason buried these tripods long before mankind came along and decide to strike now. And I'm not dissing ID4, BF - I still break out the DVD on occasion.
This was probably the most disturbing film I've ever seen.
What got to me the most was that the humans are actually scarier than the aliens. The sheer greed, selfishness, and cowardice some of these people display made me furious. At some points the movie looked exactly like a John Romero zombie film.
And some of the details like the burning train and the man who gets ground up and sprayed as a mist... horrible stuff and just sticks in your mind.
On the plus side, the movie had some very beautiful moments of courage and compassion that made it all worthwhile.
Me and my wife are both in the Army, so we really loved the fact that it's a soldier who pulls everyone together to save Cruise's character at the end.
Great stuff. A+

Something I just recalled. Something I still don't get. Something that when I saw it I thought I wouldn't enjoy this film as it was to be riddled with inconsistencies. Though in the end I was happily wrong.
The camcorder.
When all that "lightning" in the beginning was done there was the scene which seemed to take great lengths at showing nothing worked. No cars, clocks, phones, or watches for that matter.
Next thing we know there's a dude with a camcorder and it's working.

Pacemakers? Haven't a clue. I'd imagine.
Damnit. Tried to submit it to www.slipups.com but got the message they have too many slip-ups to review right now. Craptastic.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs: We assume that the camcorder is working despite the EMP because it was switched off when the EMP struck.

Though were that the case there should have been a far greater number of working cars.Pissin' Poonani wrote:Found this over at the IMDb:Señior's Covenant wrote:

Well, it would only be in the area of initial "landings" by the incoming aliens. I think they mostly landed in residential areas to begin with.Autobloke wrote:And military equipment and stuff.Señior's Covenant wrote:Though were that the case there should have been a far greater number of working cars.
Ain't seen the film yet though, so I'm commenting blindly here.

What bugs me is, surely the aliens were monitoring Earth for millenia... they would have been aware of germs.
And a race so advanced could easily remote-control the tripods...
Btw, the tripods were in the original novel, right? Because in the original movie, there were these hovering steam irons...
