So...what's a racist?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

So...what's a racist?

Post by Professor Smooth » Wed Jun 15, 2005 7:05 pm

I've been getting called a racist a lot lately. This bothers me. So, I'm asking the internet (the absolute best place for unbiased opinions ever) whether the following things make someone racist:

1) Disliking rap music/hip-hop.
2) Being unable to understand people when they speak ebonics.

Uh, yeah, that's about it. I don't like rap and I can't understand what people are saying when they speak ebonics. There's really nothing else there.

So, show of hands, do these things make me a racist?

Depends on why you dislike it.

Considering the majority of "ebonics" is based on new and made-up definitions to existing words, or entirely made-up words all around, it's not surprising. I can understand a degree (up to about '01) but beyond that, I have no idea what's being said. That makes me uninformed, not racist.

So, pending a reason for number one, no I don't think you're a racist.

Now those two Jedi in Ep. 1 calling Maul "it". That's racist.

The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.

The sound does not appeal to me. I suspect it's because of an excess of bass.

Not really. They were referring to an unidentified 'something', rather than an identified 'someone'.

Otherwise, how prejudiced is anyone who ever says "What is it?"

And, depending on when exactly in the film you're on about, they could have been using a generalisation of an event or situation where they encountered Maul, rather than Maul himself.

Dialects don't have skin colours. Race, insofar as it exists, is genetic rather than cultural. Cordially invite people to f*ck off.

nah. Of course every thing is about the context it's said in. If I said I knew white people were going round called people niggertt han you'd assume it was racist.
If it was pointed out they were calling their good friends nigger and were into hip hop and liked the modern context of the term as a sign of respct then it's not.

Pleanty of people dislike rap for damn good reasons. it's not mellody based and when it is it's a cover thats been hacked in. the beats are repetative and the genra lacks originality completly these days.

I'm not sure what ebonics. If it's "ganster rap type talk" that is sourced from the modern urban getto than no. I struggly with many acents. When i worked in agym I was good friends with a french chef and a indian one. Both i kept saying "Pardon" in most conversations because I couldn't understand.

I've never found ebonics hard, just a strand of english with wrods strangly used in different context but then most people in thw UK who speak ebonics are white these days. But I lost myself neither point as you've presented it means your racist in the slightest. Prehaps not in touch with todays "Yuth" but not certainly not a racist.

If you want to feel better about disliking or not understanding ebonics see what Bill Crosby has to say about it.
He's quite critical about "ebonics speak" as well as other recent trends to "black culture"

I felt vaguely uncomfortable when 50 Cent was bottled off the stage at Reading last year, ostensibly because "it was a rock festival, not a rap festival". It's not the eclectic attitude I would have hoped for.

Having said that, disliking rap music doesn't mean a person is racist. There's loads of "white" music I can't stand. I hate most R'n'B yet love Hip-Hop. It's not an issue as far as I can see.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

1) Disliking rap music/hip-hop.
I don't like it either, because in general I see it tie in with ebonics, and very rarely does any rap I've heard, make any sense unless they are swearing all the time, and I don't like to listen to music like that.

2) Being unable to understand people when they speak ebonics.
I have a hard time with it too, but it really gets on my nerves. My parents always drilled grammar into my skull, so ebonics just comes off as very ignorant sounding, which is a shame because it can earn very bright people a lack of respect.

I don't think you are a racist for those things. Maybe you don't like Japanese music like I do, or understand a thick japanese accent. Doesn't mean you have something against the people, just certain culture points. I'm sure there are aspects of your own relative culture that you aren't pleased with either.

Ebonics be whack, g money.

I don't think you can really lump together hip hop and rap though.

Rap: A MC, A DJ, 2 turntables and a microphone. Bottles and cans, PLEASE bring your hands together in a matter which creates audio waves.

Hip Hop: Instrumentality, evocative lyrics, and even some use of harmonies.

Too Democratic, Republic [composite word including 'f*ck'] it
We chicken nugget, we dip in the sauce like mop and bucket
Blue-collar scholars, who'll take your dollar and wipe my ass wit it
You living for the lotto never hit it, I met a critic
I made her **** her draws
She said she tought Hip Hop was only guns and alcohol
I said "Oh hell naw!" but yet it's that too
You can't discrimahate because you done read a book or 2
What if I looked at you in a microscope saw all the dirty organisms
Living in your closet would I stop and would I pause it "whoo"
To put that bitch in slower motion, got the potion and the antidote
And a quote for collision the decision
Is do you want to live or wanna exist
The game changes everyday so obsolete is the fist and marches
Speeches only reaches those who already know about it
This is how we go about it

Man I promise, I'm so self conscious
That's why you always see me with at least one of my watches
Rollies and Pasha's done drove me crazy
I can't even pronounce nothing, pass that versace!
Then I spent 400 bucks on this
Just to be like nigga you ain't up on this!
And I can't even go to the grocery store
Without some ones thats clean and a shirt with a team
It seems we living the american dream
But the people highest up got the lowest self esteem
The prettiest people do the ugliest things
For the road to riches and diamond rings
We shine because they hate us, floss cause they degrade us
We trying to buy back our 40 acres
And for that paper, look how low we a'stoop
Even if you in a Benz, you still a nigga in a coop/coupe

I say [composite word including 'f*ck'] the police, thats how I treat em
We buy our way out of jail, but we can't buy freedom
We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need em
Things we buy to cover up what's inside
Cause they make us hate ourself and love they wealth
That's why shortys hollering "where the ballas' at?"
Drug dealer buy Jordans, crackhead buy crack
And a white man get paid off of all of that
But I ain't even gon act holier than thou
Cause [composite word including 'f*ck'] it, I went to Jacob with 25 thou
Before I had a house and I'd do it again
Cause I wanna be on 106 and Park pushing a Benz
I wanna act ballerific like it's all terrific
I got a couple past due bills, I won't get specific
I got a problem with spending before I get it
We all self conscious I'm just the first to admit it

I know someone tried to have Marilyn Manson with projectiles the one and only time I've seen him live—the set (which was mostly jamming rather than songs) was cut short after he jumped into the crowd and gave as good as he got...

Yes, and I have to admit on that occasion I was responsible for throwing a bottle of my own piss at them. I dunno, it's a tough call. I wouldn't bottle 50 'cause I like his music and respect him as an artist, while I bottled Daphne and Celeste because I couldn't feasibly kill them in a slow and excruciating manner and then violate the corpses singing "Ooh stick this, you talentless wastes of skin."

[edit] While I'm on the subject, I've got a few bottles lined up for Glastonbury next week as well. Say hello to Babyshambles, the White Stripes...I was going to say Doves as well, but they're so nondescript and bland, I really can't be arsed.
