Apparently the good folks over in Singapore have created a virtual reality Pac Man
The article says they've got a Quake one as well. Craziness.

mixed reality is the way forward - Imagine going to an arcade, where you put on some light weight glasses. they are clear and transparent. you then walk around what looks like a film a set of say Aliens or somthing. gun in hand....
The computer already has the gemotry of the film set you are walking in for real inside its memory - it then overlays super high-res looking aliens across your specs, making it look like there really is an alien standing in front of you.
Combine this with a fake recoil on your assult rifle, and lens flares + muzzle flashs via the computer, ammo cases etc ejected - and you should feel, and be able to interact with your enviroment for real!!
Seriously this stuff is the future, its you, in reality, the computer just aids reality by creating the 'fake' bits for you.
Apart from scaring the crap out of you, would it no be cool?
Of course it doesnt have to be aliens it could be applied to the wizard of OZ or somthing

I was thinking more of putting young angst filled John into a room of elderly with the mixed reality version of the new Tekken. Watch the upheaval.Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:it would be possible to achive, u just wouldnt feel the contact with your oppnent.
Muchas gracias to Mob for the Sig, proving why he's called 'King'.
The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.

That would be far too disturbing...saysadie wrote:Hey, what about the Sims!
And ace to Mario VR Impy!
You might lose your bleedin' sanity trying to make sence of the alternate dimension that Mario Mario's been sucked into, but it would be psycedelic fun! And the idea of VR Beat Em' Up's would be a revolution in anger management therapy me thinks.... Just don't let Saysadie play it...

Beat 'em ups: You might accidentally kick the crap out of another user. If you were all in the same room. Which would be dumb, of course.Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:remebr its mixed reality so the only interaction u can have is via a real world enviroment, everything else has to be simulated so u cant feel and touch it.
How about Virtual Leisure Suit Larry?

Seems like a VERY simple idea would be Mario Kart set on a go kart track. Pick up items, see them, and shoot them vertically. And if something hits you, like a turtle shell, your engine could shut off for several seconds or something. Hitting a banana peel could cause your VR view to spin around, causing you to have to slow down a bit.

Used correctly U can add to the excitement - for instance, how about riding a roller coaster, then super imposing an alien world around the track or somthing? going through lava fields and stuff. or it could be like flying in a space fighter from star wars between all the other ships.
I personaly think its the future of the video game arcade. an experience that cant be translated to the home, unlike current arcades where the graphis they once championed are no longer there strong point.

There is no doubt in my mind that arcade games MUST go down the "experince using peripherals that consoles can't duplicate" road.
But when will something like this be cost effective to where you could create it for the masses?
I mean, just imagine a place that had that roller coaster game, Mario Kart, Pac Man, Super Mario Bros, and Quake.
That place is going to have to be huge to encompass all that "real" game space, and you'll have to have player caps on the games and/or time caps on how long the game can be played.
How much would you pay to go to a place like that? £10? £20? £30?

Yeah I mean I dont belive it would all be under one roof, but its possible for these types of games to exist in different places.
Disney world might have your new roller coaster experience.
Or Sega Parks might have the Quake style games. id pay £10 for that, if you got a good ammount of time. say20 mins?
I recall a few years ago the 'alien' experience where you were led around a factory set or somthing and guy in alien suits would jump out etc... it was actually pretty decent and quite scary. i remember sitting in a tunnel full of smoke, deep orange glow, i couldnt see more then a foot in front of my face. and this alien just came out in front of me, scared the living crap out of me and everyone else.
Our guide, a marine with an assult rifle guns him down, all blanks firings and everything - was wicked.
Now if they could do that, and give me a gun, CG alien super-imposed, that would freaking rule.

Wow, that sounds sweet. Like a sci fi version of those "Dinner Murder Mystery" parties. Where did this "alien experince" take place? How much was it and is it still around?

there were a few up and down the country, they were offical Alien products, so the marines were all dressed in proper gear with proper guns, the suits were direct off the movie set and it played through like being in a TV movie, you were led around a complex which resembled the set from Aliens.
It cost about £7 I think back in 95? (might be wrong) and I went to it at the Trocodero in London and they also brought the experience to Bournemouth.
It was a really great buzz

I went to the one in London, but I'm a miserable old fart and thought it was rather pump. I much preferred trying to find my way around a maze building in pitch black in Great Yarmouth - you'd bump into other customers, and the walls would occasionally light up with big models of monsters and murderers behind plexi. THAT scared the absolute sh*t out of me. If you made it out within a certain time limit you won a crappy prize. I'd memorise the route and then take all my friends through in one go to clear out all the day's prizes. Ah, happy days, back when I were a lad - it's all gone now unfortunately - there's fields there now.
Wouldn't each user of the rollercoaster ride have to be plugged into an independant computer to get their own view generated? That'd be expensive to operate. Then the expense would have to be passed onto the customer. But tech is cheap these days, so I don't know...
