Coldplay - X& Y

Has anyone bought it yet? Apparantly selling at a phenomenal rate.
I love it. It's intense and the sound is beautifully layered, Chris Martin's vocals are stunning. It's as much a step up musically from Rush of Blood as that was to Parachutes. Speed of Sound is probably the weakest track on the album when you listen all the way through.
White Shadows and Talk are my fave tracks. They are the fastest and most epic Coldplay tracks yet.
Happy. I love it when a band delivers.

I love "God put a smile upon my face", top 3 all timer. I got into "Amsredam" funnily enough flying back from Amsterdam. I enjoy yellow. Other than that they pretty much bore me.
The live stuff radio one has been playing is just awful too. He can't hit those notes and sometimes just gives up without trying.
Not as good as the hype makes them out to be. Now The Killers, for a debut album Hot Fuss is genius. Bravo.
What I've heard of the new album hasn't impressed either.

I like Coldplay.
I don't like the way they're being forced down my throat.
I like the music.
I don't like the fact that Chris Martin sings like he's being strangled.
I saw a comment somewhere earlier this week that "Coldplay are Dido for blokes. Whether this is a good or bad thing is upto the individual."
New Gorillaz song is fab. Shaun Ryder!

Does anybody really give a toss about whether an act has a decent name or not? It's the music that counts.
I was sticking Suede's albums onto my mp3 player last night. First two albums are pretty similar, but the third was just a huge stylistic leap. Imposed to a degree, yeah, but compare that to the difference between Coldplay's three albums.
Shiver was quality. Pissed all over Yellow, though that's the track everybody always raves about. Blah.
No, if you'll excuse me, I have to go and find a copy of Pendulum's new track, Slam. I may have to resort to means of dubious legality, and I wouldn't want to offend those of you who disapprove of those measures...
Aye. Speed of Sound genuinely sounds like it could have come off either of the previous two albums. Not a good thing.snarl wrote:Shiver is a song I really like.
They had a bit of charm to them back then. Now they just get on my tits - I couldn't give a **** that that ***** frog beat them, they didn't deserve to get to number one by rehashing clocks.

Like you say, that was imposed. I'd expect an album absent of the former chief-songwriter to sound somewhat different.Brendocon wrote:

Radiohead might be a better example. A huge leap between albums 1 & 2, then again between 2 & 3.
There's definitely been a slow progression over Coldplay's 3 albums. But I definitely prefer it when they experiment a bit, rather than try to echo U2.
Talking of Suede, I've got The Tears album. Looking forward to giving that a spin.

There's little about at the moment that I'd call brilliant.
Some decent stuff seeping through. Bravery, Gorillaz, the new QOTSA and System of a Down albums. Zane Lowe occasionally plays some decent stuff, but it's a shame he's such an annoying **** (he is ill at the moment, though, so we've got a rotation of other folks).
I've got a huge Amazon order coming to me in the next couple of weeks - White Stripes, Oasis, Gorillaz, Coldplay, Tears, Idlewild, the last Puressence album, Daft Punk, Athlete, Freestylers, Foo Fighters.
I'm hoping some of it'll be decent.
Having trouble listening to The Coral... they've barely progressed at all. And the Zutons sound almost exactly like them. That's annoying.
Blur are another band who changed remarkably over the space of a few albums. Several times.
I must find this damn Pendulum track...

The probalem si that every oasis album gets the review "Best album since What's the story.....". I been generally so disapointed by their quality I can't muster the engegy to put tiem aside to listen to them.spiderfrommars wrote:The Oasis album is their best since 1995 (10 years!!). I quite liek Coldplay. I don't like the singer or anything but I'm quite fond of some of their songs. Best song is still "Trouble" IMO and they can be a bit samey, however they still make some decent music at worst.

Not IMO. Be Here Now had a handful of great songs but they were badly produced and overlong. Good example: Getting Better Man. Could have been a great singalong but the sound is dirgy and at over 7 mins just too long. Less said about All Around The World the better.
I think Stand By Me and Don't Go Away are brilliant tho. And most of the others do have some of the 'magic' that the later albums lack.
But I think SOTSOG is a more focussed record. Brilliant instrumental opening track, and Gas Panic is one of their best rockers. Much better production throughout, love the use of choirs(!).
As I say, IMO. I wouldn't say it was much better than Be Here Now, but just edges it.

See, the overproduced and self-indulgently long intros/outros are what I absolutely love about Be Here Now.
It's so wonderfully up itself. It's got the same overproduced arrogance and fuzzy wall of sound production that Definitely Maybe had... the records since then haven't had that.
Shoulder had some decent tracks, but was let down by some hideous lyrics. I Can See a Liar would have been brilliant if it wasn't for the crap vocals.
Didn't Noel sack McGuigan and the Other One just after Shoulder was recorded? So I can't even attribute the change to a personnel shift...

Yeah, there's a lot of fun to be had from that, but it ceases to be funny after 70 minutes of music!Brendocon wrote: See, the overproduced and self-indulgently long intros/outros are what I absolutely love about Be Here Now.

Its got the trademark Owen Morris production yes, but this time coked up to the max! I think I heard somewhere that theres 70 guitars on My Big Mouth!Brendocon wrote:

Can't disagree there. Sunday Morning Call's another one: nice tune, shame about the lyrics.Brendocon wrote:

I think they left during the making of it, but he had their parts rerecorded anyway. THey weren't sacked and jumped ship AFAIK.Brendocon wrote:

You can't go wrong with the new SoaD album. Recomended......Best First wrote:Consiering getting these - esp SoaDBrendocon wrote: the new QOTSA and System of a Down albums.
Listen up Coldplay - SoaD show you how to be politically aware / active and still make interesting music.
I'm yet to hear a Coldplay song that doesn't end up being a monotonous dirge, even if you think you like it at first.
I've also never seen the appeal of Oasis. They just look / sound / write songs of the quality of a mediocre pub band. When you see a tribute act to most artists, you can see you are watching a second-rate performer who has found their level. However, I have seen a couple of Oasis tribute acts over the years that seemed more polished that the real Oasis.
New music - new releases, not just 'new' bands - is pretty up and down at the mo' for me. Very little to actively go 'WoW!' over, quite a lot to go 'hmmm' about. I get to - have to more like - listen to lots of music at work, which invariably includes the new releases, so I've heard a lot of the stuff mentioned.
I think the best thing mentioned is the new System album, it's the tops. Clever, funny and seriously rocks hard. Is very short, but then is also cheaper than your average bear. In a climate of entirely mediocre albums in which things like the Killers - who I do like but are kinda US-styled reheats of mid-90's indie - seem like a breath of fresh air, this is the one recent album that actually kicks out and goes for it. Wildly inventive, a hell of a lot of fun and not as stupid as it may at first appear.
Sorry, I'm in the 'dislike Coldplay' camp. To me, the new album is the plops. They seem to have managed to make music that is both boring and painful to listen to at the same time, so at least deserve a modicum of respect. However, it's largely just mince to my ears, sorry. There's one track on the album I kinda liked, think it was the 2nd one, as it seemed to sound like a bunch of 6th year kids trying to sound like Pink Floyd.
I just don't get the Coldpay thing - although liked some of the discordant elements on the first album. Their 'epic' sound just seems to involve putting some reverb on a guitar, echoes on Chris -can't actually sing for turnips- Martin's voice and replacing the bass with some plinky-plonky keyboard. Still, XYZ or whatever the hell it's called seems vaguely more interesting than the one before that, which was just a ******* horrendous whinefestdirgebag of an album.
New Tears album is...just like early Suede except not as good. I have a mate who's a huge Suede fan and he likes it a fair deal, so I expect it'll go down well with those similarly inclined.
The Gorrilaz album isn't actually that bad, but it's not very 'listen to me! Listen to me!' and is also quite short or just gives that impression. I can barely remember anything about it except that I was relieved it was on and Coldplay had finished.
Similarly, I head the new White Stipes album as well and can't remember a thing about it other than it was allright. Hmpf.
New QOTSA album is the worst one they've yet released, but is still fairly nifty. I was gutted when I first heard it tho, esp when the version of 'In My Head' on it is worse than the one on Desert Sessions 9+10.
I do luv Nick Oliveri but I wasn't expecting his depature to so neuter the Queens like this.
Most interesting thing I've head recently is the newest Sons and Daughters album...although it does have this one song on it that sounds like Nick Cave backed up by the Pogues which I'm not sure about.

Cool. That makes 4 people I know of who are aware that this rather excellent band exists.Brendocon wrote:Puressence
