Info on bit torrent

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

:?: So there's this site that offers fansubbed eps of Galaxy Force (and a coupla other things what look interesting) and you can d/l them if you have bit torrent. But, I'm a little hesitant to get the program without knowing anything about it, so if there's anyone what knows about bit torrent, LMK please? Thanks in advance.

Bit torrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing client.

Your bit torrent downloads a small torrent file, which then directs it out onto the Internet to find 'seeders' and begin downloading from them.

All the parts of the file which you have whilst downloading then become seeders, so people can download them off of you whilst you are downloading from someone else.

The program is opensource and has been pretty thoroughly scrutinised by the programming community so if it has any security holes there certainly aren't any trojans or backdoors AFAIK.

The biggest security problem with bittorrent is the possibility that you're downloading a virus rather than a legitimate file. But that's a risk with any filesharing network, whatever the state of the software running it. Just make sure you've got the latest security updates for whatever program you're gonna be playing the downloads on and you should be fine. Like Karl said, BitTorrent has been heavily scrutinised. If the community haven't found (and probably patched) all the security holes yet, it's unlikely that the crackers and malware writers have found the ones that have been missed.
